Review of Digital Fundamentals (Custom Edition) by Thomas L Floyd:This book is a gem on digital logic and practical implementation.I think there are three camps to whom this subject is traditionally taught: pure computer scientists, computer/electrical engineers and technicians. The former group (in my experience) focuses on abstraction and does not cover the actual digital circuits implementation in depth. The CE/EEs usually cover enough of the useful theory along with the practical implementation - because at the end of the day they are expected to actually build something physical. This naturally extends to electronic technicians for whom this book is written but don't need the higher-level abstractness (don't let that dissuade you if you are an engineer - the explanations and diagrams are much better than several commonly used EE books). This book is definitely for practical man (& woman) in the latter two camps.In the edition I have (8th) it summarizes practical CPLD programming using ABEL. The later editions use VHDL to program FPGAs but from the coverage I've seen in the 10th edition it doesn't seem to be much.I found it to be an excellent coverage of basic digital circuits: logic, combinational and sequential for those who have no idea of what that terminology means (maybe you?). The end of chapter design examples are wonderfully well written as is the text. The figures and diagrams are not only delightfully well done but super useful and intuitive. 10/10 would recommended to someone teaching themselves as a primary source.Note on which edition to purchase:This is a "custom edition" which is probably just the 8th edition in paperback because Pearson decided they couldn't lower the price on the hardback. I doubt much of the material has changed in the later editions as I made a comparison with the 10th hardback edition. In fact the only difference at glance seems to be one of the later chapters is entitled "Signal Interfacing and Processing" in the 10th edition and "Digital Signal Processing" in this "Custom" 8th edition for which my review refers.

ITS MISSING A CHAPTER FROM THE ORIGINAL EDITION ON CAPACITANCE. Its one chapter vs like 40 bucks more, which you can easily work your way around for a single chapter.... But its still annoying. So its basically a good book with stupid formulas. It cuts right to the chase when it comes to conceptual learning but it will rewrite formulas throughout the book to suit specific situations instead of just teaching you how to rewrite the original formula to suit your needs. An example would be calculating resistance for two resistors in parallel. You can do the all encompassing "inverse resistance, added together" (which can be any number of resistors) or "AB/A+B" (which is only relavent for two resistors). theyll always use their shortcut methods that don't help you on the test when there's three resistors and you only remember the formula for two -_- but you catch on quickly to their little game and if you write down base formulas when you first see them, life is so...so... Much better. I've taken 2 courses in AC and DC and its super helpful except the missing capacitance chapter. I never plan on letting this book go despite these little hiccups.

Great price worth it

Really breaks down what you need to know for understanding computer logic. This book has proven worthy in furthering my learning of microprocessors.

About the Author

Jane W. Ball graduated from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, and subsequently received a BS from the Johns Hopkins University. She began her nursing career working in the pediatric surgical inpatient, emergency department, and outpatient clinic of the Johns Hopkins Medical Center, first as a staff nurse and then as a pediatric nurse practitioner. After recognizing a need to focus on the health of children she returned to school and obtained both a master of public health and a doctor of public health degree from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health with a focus on maternal and child health. After graduation Dr. Ball became the chief of child health services for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Health. In this capacity she oversaw the state-funded well-child clinics and explored ways to improve education for the state’s community health nurses. After relocating to Texas, she joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington School of Nursing to teach community pediatrics to registered nurses returning to school for a BSN. During this time she became involved in writing her first textbook, Mosby’s Guide to Physical Examination, which is currently in its eighth edition. After relocating to the Washington, DC, area, she worked at Children’s National Medical Center on a number of federally funded projects. The first project in 1986, teaching instructors of emergency medical technicians from all states about the special care children need during an emergency revealed the shortcomings of the emergency medical services system for children. This exposure was a career-changing event. A textbook entitled Pediatric Emergencies, A Manual for Prehospital Providers was subsequently developed. A second project led to the development of a pediatric emergency education program for nurses in emergency departments to promote improved care for children. Both of these programs served as a foundation for other pediatric emergency education developed and sponsored by national organizations. For 15 years Dr. Ball managed the federally funded Emergency Medical Services for Children’s National Resource Center. As executive director, she provided and directed the provision of consultation and resource development for state health agencies, health professionals, families, and advocates about successful methods to improve the health care system so that children get optimal emergency care in all health care settings. After leaving that position, she continues to be engaged in many projects with a focus on the emergency care system. She is a consultant to the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, supporting state trauma system development. She recently completed a federally funded project to study whether the implementation of a statewide pediatric emergency department recognition program improved pediatric emergency care. In 2010, Dr. Ball received the Distinguished Alumna Award from the Johns Hopkins University.   Ruth C. McGillis Bindler received her BSN from Cornell University—New York Hospital School of Nursing. She worked in oncology nursing at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and then a public health nurse in Dane County, Wisconsin. Thus began her commitment to work with children as she visited children and their families at home, and served as a school nurse. Due to this interest in child health care needs, she earned her MS in child development from the University of Wisconsin. A move to Washington State was accompanied by a new job as a faculty member at the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education in Spokane. Dr. Bindler was fortunate to be involved for over 38 years in the growth of this nursing education consortium, which is a combination of public and private universities and colleges and is now the Washington State University (WSU) College of Nursing. Ruth obtained a PhD in human nutrition at WSU. She taught theory and clinical courses in child health nursing, cultural diversity and health, graduate research, pharmacology, and assessment, as well as serving as lead faculty for child health nursing. She was the first Director of the PhD in Nursing program at WSU and most recently served as Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, which include Master of Nursing, Post-Masters certificates, PhD and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs. She recently retired and serves the college and profession as a professor emeritus, continuing work with graduate students and research. Her first professional book, Pediatric Medications, was published in 1981, and she has continued to publish articles and books in the areas of pediatric medications and pediatric health. Research foci have been childhood obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiometabolic risk factors in children. Ethnic diversity and interprofessional collaboration have been additional themes in her work. Dr. Bindler believes that her role as a faculty member and administrator enabled her to learn continually, foster the development of students in nursing, lead and mentor junior faculty into the teaching role, and participate fully in the profession of nursing. In addition to teaching, research, publication, and leadership, she enhances her life by professional and community service, and by activities with her family. Kay J. Cowen received her BSN from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and began her career as a staff nurse on the pediatric unit of North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. She developed a special interest in the psychosocial needs of hospitalized children and preparing them for hospitalization. This led to the focus of her master’s thesis at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) where she received a master of science in nursing education degree with a focus in maternal child nursing.   Mrs. Cowen began her teaching career in 1984 at UNCG where she continues today as clinical professor in the Parent Child Department. Her primary responsibilities include coordinating the pediatric nursing course, teaching classroom content, and supervising a clinical group of students. Mrs. Cowen shared her passion for the psychosocial care of children and the needs of their families through her first experience as an author in the chapter “Hospital Care for Children” in Jackson & Saunders’ Child Health Nursing: A Comprehensive Approach to the Care of Children and Their Families published in 1993.   In the classroom, Mrs. Cowen realized that students learn through a variety of teaching strategies and became especially interested in the strategy of gaming. She led a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of gaming in the classroom and subsequently continues to incorporate gaming in her teaching. In the clinical setting, Mrs. Cowen teaches her students the skills needed to care for patients and the importance of family-centered care, focusing on not only the physical needs of the child but also the psychosocial needs of the child and family. During her teaching career, Mrs. Cowen has continued to work part time as a staff nurse: first on the pediatric unit of Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro and then at Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem. In 2006 she became the part-time pediatric nurse educator in Brenner’s Family Resource Center. Through this role she is able to extend her love of teaching to children and families.   Through her role as an author, Mrs. Cowen is able to extend her dedication to pediatric nursing and nursing education.

About the Author

Edwin Williamson holds the King Alfonso XIII Chair of Spanish at the University of Oxford. He has since 2003 been a Professorial Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford. He had previously held the Forbes Chair of Hispanic Studies at the University of Edinburgh. An outstanding achievement. This history is valuable and unusual first for the extensive coverage of Latin America before the European arrival and secondly for the detail of the Spanish and Portuguese history that explains so much of the Columbus to Independence centuries. I was disappointed in the chapters on the twentieth century-they seemed to bog down in detail without structure. There is a shocking factual error in the chapter about the conflict in Central America in the 70s-80s-the author describes in detail the fictional assassination of Archbishop Romero on the steps of his cathedral, an event in films but not in life where he was shot saying mass in a hospital chapel. The kindle edition of this book has many errors of spelling, grammar, and incomplete sentences, not quite something on every page, but close.

The book describe the role that the Iberian peninsula played in Latin America as we see it today. It gives one a good feeling of how, after 300 years of Spanish occupation, the deposition of the king of Spain by Napoleon (and the movement of the royal court of Portugal to Brasil) played a role in the formation of the current states and current travails. With the political history an account is also given over time of trends in literature, poetry and music and its reflection of societies. Williamson is a Genius - the story he weaves is captivating and a joy to follow. I especially liked the sections on the growth of the societies involved and how that contributed to the rise of Intellectual pursuits and the Arts. I love this book so much I've given it to friends and followed its reading with Williamson's biography of Borges! The Penguin History is without question the perfect introduction to Latin America's rich and inspiring history!

Loving this series! Cannot wait for the future volumes to come. What is really making my heart flutter about these books (besides Chise and Elise!) is the time that Kore (artist/author) took to research the some of the real information on some of the magical beings, items ect. For example, the character that takes care of the house, she is a Brownie and a little detail that got me was that Chise will leave a little bit of cream for her on a shelf as a "thank you" and that is something a person would do to appease the gentle and caring house fairies.Other then accurate details this series is a delight to read, though I would have to agree with another rating I read that the relationship between Chise and Elise is kind of progressing fast without much interaction or reason other then he is the only person (wizard, fairy,demon?) ever to want her at all. All in all like many on here agree, it's a good series to read and I recommend it too!

It's been a very long time since I have been so into a manga I literally count the days to the release of new chapters. This series is stunning, both for it's delightful artistry, but also for it's storytelling. The world is immersive, expansive, and feels limitless. The characters are captivating, compelling, and each chapter just leaves you wanting more. Hand's down one of the most thorough world's I've had the pleasure to get sucked into, the lore is just so wonderful and deeply integrated into the storytelling process it's a true gem and work of art. If you haven't given this series a try I urge you to do so, the anime is also wonderful and follows the manga to a T. Don't miss out on this on this one, you wont regret it!

This is an enjoyable series, dark at times yet still having warmth and some comedy. I saw the movie and watch the anime. It's nice to see they followed the books so closely. Fortunately I can read ahead of the anime so get to read what is coming.

The story and artwork are superb in this series! Giving three stars because the cover had a large crease in it, and that's what I was trying to avoid by buying this brand new. Not the worst thing in the world though, haha. Would definitely recommend this series to those who love fantasy (and subtle romance)!

The anime often seems to present the idea of how one navigates a world without any emotions besides rage and vindictiveness. The manga is kinder, going into the underpinnings of the reasons one might do so.

It is really the only one of its kind as a decent introduction to the history of the modern foundations of international law beginning with Grotius and ending with Kant. It is a series of lectures somewhat upgraded -- each figure gets a nice chapter. I loved his earlier books beginning with Natural Rights Theories, and this is no exception. The magisterial supplement to this, going back a bit, would be Quentin Skinner's two volume history beginning in the middle ages.

My son really enjoys these books. He laughs often while reading them. Nate seems to get in trouble at school often so I suppose he's not the best example for kids. I've talked to my son about this aspect and he seems to keep it in perspective. I prefer Diary of a Wimpy Kid over the big Nate series.

I do know, after volunteering in an elementary school library that the kids like this author.

I loved reading this book as it was vey funny and interesting.If you are sad or lonely,Big Nate is sure to cheer you up and bring laughter in every page!

This review is more about my thoughts on the Big Nate series as a whole; not this book in particular.As odd as it may seem, I'm a 34 year old who likes this character for some reason. I think Lincoln Peirce's character Big Nate is better than Jeff Kinney's Greg Huffley from the Wimpy Kid books, but I think the fact that there are 2 to 3 Big Nate releases each year is part of the reason I'm a little burned out on these books. I think I have around 27 of these now (can't believe it's that many already!) and I've had so much trouble finding the motivation to read the last few I've purchased.I can't say it's a time issue because anyone can get through one of these books in maybe a half an hour. But at the same time, I don't find myself re-reading any of these books. In fact, I don't think I've reread ANY of these books. I think a child would be much more apt to re-read these, even with the idea that their attention spans are supposedly shorter than adults. I mean I get it; I'm not the target audience here.So, while I still love the characters and the world Lincoln has created, I feel the need to stop buying these. Additionally, I talked to a co-worker at work who has a grandchild and offered up my backlog of Big Nate and Wimpy Kid books to her grandchild. That was kind of awkward to ask without feeling and seeming kind of creepy, but I honestly think a child can get more out of these books than me given they just sit on my bookshelf. Am I ashamed to own these books given my age? No, I don't think so. Again, I think the quality of Perice's characters and world can be appreciated by anyone of any age, but I think the medium of prose is holding me back.This isn't to say I don't want to read, but in the last few years I think music has become the most important form of media to me. Compared to movies, video games and books, music can be enjoyed passively while doing something else. That's incredibly important to me these days because I'm usually multitasking in general. Again, I have free time, but I don't want to be glued to one thing extensively. Additionally, music has become important to me because some of my leisurely activities center around music. I love writing about the songs and albums I enjoy so music ends up killing a few birds with one stone for me.So, yeah, I think I'm going to stop buying these. It's neither a quality issue nor gripe against the author. I hope the series goes on to live a lengthy lifespan. It's just a choice I have to make in regards to which media I get the most out of.

I ordered this for my nephew. It was just what he wanted. He was so excited to get it. He loves books like this!
