This is an excellent book, beautifully written, from which I learned a lot. It is really the only one of its kind as a decent introduction to the history of the modern foundations of international law beginning with Grotius and ending with Kant. It is a series of lectures somewhat upgraded -- each figure gets a nice chapter. I loved his earlier books beginning with Natural Rights Theories, and this is no exception. The magisterial supplement to this, going back a bit, would be Quentin Skinner's two volume history beginning in the middle ages.

This book is indispensable for numerous disciplines, not least international history. This is a great work with extremely broad applications.
