Things I liked: I learned about a piece of history I never heard of before, the elitist Veiled Prophet Ball. The writer's style is fairly zippy and polished. Things I didn't like: She kept slowing the story down with repetitive and boring teen-sexuality bits; every time the mystery/adventure got moving, she stalled it with "ooooh, his eyes/oooooh, the smell of her hair" stuff. I also disliked the graphic details of the violence. And I hate the cover. The models chosen don't embody the characters to me at all. Too bad they didn't splurge on real art.
Schaffer's mystery/romance is set in Depression-era St Louis. I grew up in Ireland so I had actually NOT been familiar with items like the Veiled Prophet and the history of forced sterilization in the USA. (I assume most Americans are?) Fascinating stuff. For that reason the unusual storyline grabbed me from the beginning. The characters are uniquely themselves. You never feel like you are being suckered into some dumb stereotype's fantasy. The main characters' reactions constantly surprise and subtly reveal more and more layers.The dialogue is lightly peppered with enough understandable 30s-era slang to make you feel like you are cleverly in the know. After my daily reading I found myself speaking like some sort of free-spirited newsie-gangsta type. :) The book has numerous memorable lines. My favorite was: "This ain't caviar, dollface." (Sounds like nothing, but quite funny in context.)"Stanley and Hazel" includes just enough historical detail to be intriguing but mainly achieves the purpose of moving the story along. The historical context is never forced or alienating. Hitler, and Marlene Dietrich and the Cardinals baseball team, etc. etc. all have their subtle moment in the St Louis sun.Many of the scenes are so unique (the scoreboard scene was my favorite) and so well clarfied as to be unforgettable. Each scene is sparingly depicted with a light but very artistic word brush. No ostentatious flurries of adjectives and adverbs (which I usually skip over anyway; it's what I call a BLA BLA section.)And the overall story is --thankfully-- devoid of Hollywood-style DEMs. It definitely has twists and turns, but I would describe them as gentle surprises rather than abrupt (i.e. forced and unrealistic) plot twists. I like that. Very believable.I was considering docking the book a half point for its depiction of the Irish (Seamus) as drunken bums. ;) But considering the intended audience and my thorough enjoyment of this book I have repented and give it 5 sober thumbs up. Masterfully written. Historically enlightening. And a FUN read from cover to cover.Now if you will 'scuse me, dollface, my eh 'business' associates and myself need to go teach some swells how to sing like canaries. No worries. It will be ducky.
I loved Stanley and Hazel! A YA mystery set in the 1930's. Great characters, loved the lingo and the story. It reminded me of the old Bowery Boys movies and T.V. shows. Stanley is a newsie and has a lot of gumption. Hazel a rich girl from the other side of town. These two get together to solve a brutal crime they witnessed. I also enjoyed Stanley's gang and his compassion to help the less fortunate. I'm looking forward to read the next book The Winnowing.I give Stanley and Hazel 5 stars for its murder mystery.I would recommend this book to YA Mystery fans.
Great story, exciting read and well paced, enjoyed immersing myself in another time.

This book was adorable. The story was set in the time of the great depression and there just aren't a whole lot of books from that time period. Especially YA mystery type books. So I was super excited for the chance to read this one. I love reading historical books. Hazel was fantastic. She felt like she would be my best friend. She was so down to earth and relatable. She was struggling with things I think all teenage girls go through. Stanley was also fantastic! I love them together.This was a fun read and I am hoping to see more from this era!I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
This book is a great read! Started out fascinated, and then about halfway through I couldn't put it down. Some of the violent details are a bit graphic, but it added to the shock value that the characters themselves experienced. Some wonderful raw moments with the interactions between characters. Can't wait for more. You must read it!
Stanley & Hazel is the perfect mix of history, romance, and suspense. It's a funny and engaging read, but it also tackles a lot of deep and interesting topics like social class, historical biases, etc. I think people reading it for a light, fun read will get just that. People who want a look at some of the fascinating cultural aspects of the 1930s will find that as well. Overall, I highly recommend it for teens and adults. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
