About the Author

Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1965, Amedeo Salamoni is a ceramic artist living in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. After obtaining a MA from Kean University in Union, New Jersey, he continued his education at the University of Delaware, where he earned his MFA in Ceramics-Sculpture. Amedeo first began wood-firing in 1990 and has built and fired many kilns throughout his career. Love books on pottery.

If you like wood fired ceramics, or any ceramics for that matter, you'll love this book. The images of the pots are great, and there's lots of pictures of kilns to pour over as well. This is an expansive survey, though a few notable artists are missing. No matter, you can see their work other places, and there are some under-the-radar artists here that you may not have heard of before but who are making great work. The appendix of clay, glaze, and slip recipes is a bonus, also.

Wood Fired Ceramics contains some of the top artists in the world using the process. It is an amazing collection and the quality of print is top notch along! If you are into ceramics and also love wood fired ceramics it is one that needs to be in your library. It is quite a coffee table book as it is a very large book!

I ordered this book because I wanted to learn how to do the marbling of rice paper and the tools necessary for this technique. I was not disappointed when I ordered this book. My disappointment is not in the book itself but that it is not available except at a very high price above the publisher's price. Right now the book can only be purchased through the author who has a hefty price of $75.00 on it. I was able to purchase a used library copy that was suitable for me needs, but still cost me more than I wanted to pay. My suggestion is that the author put it up for sale again if she is able to do so. If she does not, then good luck in finding a copy.

This is the best book I have seen on this subject. It covers in depth the the three types of paper marbeling. It even includes how to make the tools amd trays you need. There are many fine full color examples and detailed instruction on how to reproduce the various patterns. The seller did an excelent job of packing the book. I ordered the book at night. It was shipped the next day. I rate the seller 10 stars!!!

This is the best marbling book I have found. It is packed with creative ideas & techniques not found in other books. It takes you seamlessly through the process of suminagashi, oil, & watercolor marbling as well as marbling on fabric.Tools, techniques and finished works are shown in full color throughout. The guide to creating marbled designs is fantastic. It shows you step-by-step how to make a bird, butterfly, heart, flowers, fish & 30 classic patterns.Various advanced techniques including overmarbling & compressing, as well as using friskets & a variety of additives help you create true works of art. The troubleshooting sections for each method are also a big help.I love the numerous color photo examples & inspirational gallery that includes applications of marbling in a wide range of finished art works and 3-dimensional objects. Fantastic story during the time of King Edward and Robert the Bruce. This novel grabbed me from the start and kept me turning the pages. It was a combination of everything you would hope for in a historical romance...the exciting backdrop of war between the Scottish and the English, lots of action and adventure, hidden treasure, steamy passion, untold secrets.and a little bit of magic. The characters were multi-dimensional and full of depth. You couldn't help but root for Gavin and Christian. They had such incredible chemistry and were obviously meant to find each other. I have read many books that take place during this time in history and this is surely one of the better ones. There is a great deal of historical information and it is presented in an entertaining way, woven seamlessly into the story. The details of life during these times was well presented and had a life-like feeling. Both well written and engaging, this novel is one I would highly recommend.

I took a chance on this, and I'm glad I did.I had sworn off Scottish historical romances because some of them are so violent and sad. Other than the opening scenes with Christian in the cage, this book manages to show the plight of the people without torturing or killing off loved ones (hope that's not a spoiler, but maybe it makes a difference to others besides me).The hero is angelic but more complex than that. The heroine is physically fragile but mentally strong. She is confident without dominating anyone or fighting alongside the men.The book could use another proofreading pass for minor errors, but the writing is fine. In fact, I was impressed that all the loose ends were woven back into the story, sometimes more than once. Now I'm excited to read the sequel.

It is a common historical tale of a reluctant heroine forced into marriage by a rebel hero. There are plenty of redundant qualities...* The Bruce is leading a rebellion against a greedy English King* The heroine has no choice in her marriage(s)* The hero saves the heroine from a sure deathAlthough, there are distinguishing differences that made this fiction tale enjoyable...* The alpha male saves the damsel in distress and marries her while she is unconscious* Magic and mythical tales are sprinkled throughout in a delicate way that drives the plot forward in a way that is not so forward that it makes it a paranormal or science fiction romance* The main characters aren't hell-bent on hating each other. Their love is swift, but wonderfully illustrated* The plot isn't drawn down with typical misunderstandings you see coming a million miles awaySub-characters and main characters alike are vivid and enjoyable. This book is easily squeezed into your busy life. I put my Kindle down twice during this read and still had the drive to finish it. I first fell in love with Susan Fraser King's books with Lady Macbeth- a spectacular look at the history of Scotland surrounding Macbeth's reign and a great story about the strength and intelligence of his wife. I decided to try out her more "traditional" historical romance with The Angel Knight, and I was not disappointed.King does a beautiful job describing the political and cultural atmosphere during the time of Edward Longshanks and Robert the Bruce. The love story is beautiful as well, and is based upon actual events in history - the caging of Scottish women (notably Scottish nobility), suspended from the walls of a castle, exposed to the elements and on public display, sometimes for months. Although our H and h do not seem to be actual characters from history, their story is just as compelling as real events.Their love story is not rushed and takes time to develop, which made it all the sweeter. Their stories are so moving, and King's writing draws the reader in - the emotions are palpable and believable. There is some descriptive sex - but if that's not your thing, you can skim over it without losing the story. I thought it a bit wordy myself, but I always think it adds to the esthetic quality of a love story, when it's done right.There is also the added theme of healing touch - made more magical and mysterious in this book. There are also some connections made to the legends of King Arthur, but they do not dominate the major crux of the story. Secondary characters are many, marvelous, and begging for novels of their own.If you love Scottish history, and you love a good romance, this is a stunner of a book. My only criticism is that I thought the ending was a bit cliché, but it was still good. I am surprised I hadn't come across this book until now. This was the type of book that I couldn't wait to get back to every day, so my house is a mess, but my literary needs are satisfied, and I am on to my next SFK book.

This book is my favorite love story of all time. Yes, it is barbaric, but it is realistic and honest in its historical value. King Edward (LongShanks) was a despicable, greedy and barbaric King. If you can't handle that part of history, don't read this book. While it is a work of fiction, some of the events in this book are based on true Scottish history. The essence of the book is a beautiful love story amidst Scotlands' struggle to survive England and its corruption.

I like American history, railroads, cooking and eating so Porterfield's book piqued several things for me.His systematic analysis of several of the "units" that worked together to make railroad dining possible while consistently unprofitable. It did employ a lot of people in the railroad industry. As one of the first (perhaps the first) big industries to partially integrate the work force poses a sociological conundrum. Integration brought races together in sort of a tiered fashion but it brought them together.Also his story about Fred Harvey and his many restaurants designed for rail travelers as well as his "Harvey Girls" described America's first fast food chain pretty well.The recipes and many illustrative graphics really enhanced the presentation.My only complaint is pretty minor but it is that Porterfield often used way too many examples to represent points that he was making. It makes me wonder if Porterfield is an academic rather than an avid hobbyist.All told it was a very refreshing book to read.

I love both of James Porterfield's railroad cookbooks (the other one is "From the Dining Car"), as the recipes are interesting and excellent (they all work- my husband is a chef, and he uses the recipes in both books constantly), and the stories are great- well researched and wonderfully written- they make me want to get back on a train and sit in the dining car again SO badly! Not only a book for people who like cook, but for people (like me) who like to READ cookbooks! :-) This is the softcover one we keep in the kitchen!

Interesting history (although honestly got a bit boring at times), but tons of great recipes that you can easily recreate.

Wonderful surprise. I bought this book for research on dining cars and railroads for a book. When I found the second half of the volume was recipes for the various roads, I knew it was a keeper. I've made several of the dishes already, and they are fantastic.Note: Try the Upside Down Fruit Pudding from the Illinois Central Line. But don't forget the whipped cream!

"Dining by Rail" should appeal to at least two types of curious readers; 1) railroad buffs, and 2) foodies. I'm not a real railfan, per se, although I do have a moderate interest in the history and technology of railroads. Even though my wife and I have taken several chartered steam train trips in Argentina, Ecuador and Peru, no one could ever accuse us of being "foamers." Food is another matter entirely--we ARE bona fide, enthusiastic foodies. Our cookbook library contains more than 400 volumes of recipes from all over the world. We spend many hours in the kitchen every weekend making exotic ethnic meals from these books. We've chosen many of our foreign trips at least partially on the basis of the cuisines of the places we planned to visit. And we NEVER eat fast food, but always opt for small, charming, local restaurants if at all possible.With all that said, I found James D. Porterfield's "Dining by Rail" to be a fascinating book. The 150-or-so-page Section I, "From Soot to Soufflé: Eating on the Train," relates, in great detail and in a highly readable style, the history of dining on trains. The tale starts with trackside food shacks and entrepreneurial purveyors of comestibles who roamed the aisles of passenger cars with fruits, sandwiches, snacks and drinks, all of questionable provenance, in the 1830s. The tale pretty much ends with the glory days of railroad culinary excellence over 100 years later, in the "Golden Age" of the 1930s, when specially equipped and staffed dining cars catered to every appetite of rail travelers, offering fine foods and superb service rivaling that of the finest hotels. Mr. Porterfield tells the whole story of how railroad dining concepts, cuisines, equipment and crews evolved in the years between. He enlivens his authoritative, comprehensive and informative text by including many outstanding vintage black-and-white photos and drawings.Section II, running well over 200 pages and entitled "The Railroads and their Cuisines," contains more than 300 recipes from dining car menus of America's major railroads, organized by the company that served the item and in some cases featuring historical anecdotes about the recipe. Many of the recipes, such as Canadian Pacific Yellow Pea Soup and Great Northern Chicken Pie, were signature dishes that garnered as much interest among the traveling public as did a railroad's schedule and rolling stock. The thing that surprised me about the recipes is how simple most of them are, and how few ingredients they require. Being used to cooking ethnic meals with, often, literally a dozen spices added, I marveled at recipes with only three or four ingredients that still end up tasting great. But the second section is more than just recipes. It also features several fascinating sidebars on various aspects of railroad dining, such as "Variations: French Toast as Served on Five Railroads" and "Creating the Menu." These bear reading even if you're tempted to skip Section II until you're looking for a recipe."Dining by Rail" is a really neat book. I enjoyed it immensely. As a historical study, a railroad travelogue and a cookbook of classic American food at its best, it's a hard-to-beat combination. I recommend it very highly if you have the slightest interest in the subject.

i am thrilled with this book. it discusses the history of finding food at a station, whistle-stop, and later fancy dining cars. the recipes look wonderful. havent made any yet, but you can tell if they are wierd or eill be good. i am renting a restored train depot with a number of restored cars for a big party. the food will come from this book, and the book will be featured at the party.

This book is about the development of food for passengers, all the way from people selling sandwiches out of baskets when the train stopped,to the development of the restuarants at regular stops for the trains,right up to the development of food prepared right there on the train itself. In addition to all this story, you will get all the fantastic recipies the cooks developed for all kinds of different food.Please enjoy the read and the cooking..

The first half of this book contains a wealth of information on the golden age of rail in the United States with the concentration on the history and background of the dining services and cars on the US Railroads. This is followed by a selection of recipes and menus that are arranged by railroad in the latter part of the book. This section still continues to provide some historical insight to some of these recipes. All in all this was an enjoyable trip down memory lane for me and a great reference tool.
