Review

"The Setup tells one of the most popular stories we’ve ever had on This American Life, with fascinating details you can’t fit into a one-hour radio show. Pete Crooks was set up as a mark in this true-life caper, until he out-detectived the detectives. His chatty, lively account of what happened is a jaw-dropping tale of ambition, crime, and reality TV."—Ira Glass, Host of public radio’s This American Life“Journalist Pete Crooks has very carefully reported a tale of people who believed that reality television was the fastest pathway to the fame they so desperately wanted . . . A unique insight into a house of cards constructed to lead to media fame—and to discover more sinister behavior that was occurring just behind the curtain, when the cameras weren’t shooting.”—Joe Kenda, retired police detective and subject of Discovery Television’s Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda“The Setup is most certainly a riveting real-life thriller. But the book is also much more than that . . . This deeply-layered crime and corruption story is the ultimate ‘truth is stranger than fiction’ scenario for a celebrity-obsessed culture. Once I started reading, I could not put The Setup down.”—Louise Fletcher, Academy Award-winning actress in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest“A true crime story about a delusional suburban detective trying to sell a reality show about soccer moms? Yes, you are going to laugh a lot but because Crooks treats his subjects respectfully and like the fallible humans we all are; the absurdity isn't mean-spirited. Only a true noir fan could have done such a bang-up job.”—Beth Lisick, New York Times bestselling author of Everybody Into the Pool

We have all heard the infamous story of the would be "PI MOMS" "reality" show told by Peter Crooks on Diablo Magazine, Dateline, 48 hours and 20/20, now Peter Crooks tells the story of what he couldn't tell and the aftermath, revealing what a sociopath Carl Marino (who plays Joe Kenda on Homicide Hunter) is. This information on, Carl Marino, not available on the American Life episode nor is revealed on the original Diablo piece. It's a great read, Crooks provides names to back up his claims as well as copies of emails; instead of usual tabloid fodder where everything comes from a "source". I am sure Marino will see this review since he has Google Alerts set up for his name. lolMarino downplays his involvement in dirty dui's to telling fibs of being a detective in New York. It should be noted, Marino told Kenda he was a detective and Kenda made a call and found out Marino was a jail guard. Both jobs are important jobs, however, the two are not the same. It should also be noted, Kenda has forwarded this book.My only complaint is its not offered on Audible Books.

An expose of 2 flaming narcissists, Marino and Butler, The Setup details the crooked machinations of a wannabe cop, a former cop, and an ill narcotics cop, who tragically becomes involved in corruption late in his career. Their downfall is investigated by Crooks after he learns his magazine is being lied to in an attempt to garner favorable, albeit untrue, publicity. Although Crooks magazine, Diablo, is a San Francisco regional magazine that specializes in recreation, art, and culture, he rises to the challenge and does a fine piece of investigative reporting. These people felt entitled to ruin other peoples lives, using stings under color of authority, to steal drugs and money, or defraud fragile clients. It is very satisfying that most of them are behind bars. True crime fans will be fascinated.

Mr. Crooks skillfully told a story that gives an entirely new perspective on reality television and the lengths some will go to in pursuing fame & fortune. A true story, thoroughly researched and verified ~ characters which initially present as likeable and charming are revealed to be quite the opposite. From the dedication - "to all those who hate being lied to", to Joe Kenda's introduction....your attention is captured, and you relive a thrilling yet bizarre story through Mr. Crook's eyes. I'd find myself thinking time and again "this is too twisted to be true", yet undeniable proof would be given to validate the story each time. An excellent book offering invaluable insight into the minds of celebrity-seekers and fame whores.

I first heard of this story on This American Life and then I followed the local coverage of the arrests and plea deals in the Northern California newspapers, so I wasn't sure how much more information the book would have. But there was a lot more to the story than the magazine article and the one-hour episode of TAL could contain. Also, it sounds like some of the people involved couldn't talk about the case until the investigation was completed, or in the case of the producers, until their nondisclosure agreements expired.Once I started reading, I couldn't put this book down, even though I knew how the story ended. Mr. Crooks did a great job conveying the stress he was under and the conflict going on around him. I'm really glad he turned his experience into a book and I'm really glad that I bought the extended version to learn new details about a fascinating and sordid tale.

In an effort to gain some experience as a AOE/COE investigator, I briefly worked (as a non-mom) in this Bay Area office. I was stunned at how well Crooks describes Butler and the "moms" he worked alongside for his research. This book is a wonderful ride-- the writing is so good that it carries you along like a winding work of fiction but this is an exceedingly true portrayal of a megalomaniac, his bizarre operation, and of his fame-hungry female "investigators".

This is a great story. I especially like it because it is ultra local (my hometown!), So I followed it I the news, but never learned all these facts until now!A few con's: the book could use a re edit. There are a lot of phrases that are repeated, like it was written and edited in separate chunks so the mistakes weren't caught. To the same thread, some of the chronology seemed a bit out of order, but since that chunk was already written, it was left in tact and they simply moved in with the book.

Easy 5 stars. I encourage you to read the negative reviews and realize what you are reading, There are people this author/reporter pissed off. After reading the book and other materials related to the case I believe he speaks true and as unbiased as he could be. It is well written and engaging.

Excellent book. The author did a lot of work on it. Also in doing his research for the book he didn't back down when consistently lied to. He followed thru on what was told him. I am a fan of true crime and read this book as a true crime book which it was. But journalist students and fans of journalism should also read this book. It is an excellent book with how a good journalist should act. I really do like this author and his work in getting this story.
