I first got this brilliant and easy-to-follow book years ago when I didn't have a hint of wrinkles. I used it for a few weeks, then sort of laid it aside. Recently my 80-year-old mother-in-law was in town and was complaining about wrinkles around her mouth. I pulled the book out, showed her some exercises, and she began Within a few days, you could see a difference.Since I am now mid-50's, I decided to try to get ride of my extra chin and some wrinkles from my mouth to chin. I began this routine and within 2 weeks people are asking questions "what are you doing to look younger", etc. I actually do several of the other exercises as well and my face feels much more elastic and healthy, and is definitely toning up.I have already given some of these books to some of my massage clients.Go for it! It works! Connie

i'm optomistic

I do a little of these exercises each day and I do see a difference around my mouth and eyes..albeit for only a shout time. Plus I get a laugh out of looking as a pretty girl making clown faces!

I chose this book on reference from a friend. She was so adamant that I try it, so I did. I was very surprise as to the clarity of the information provided. The pictures are clear and the procedures are easy. If you are looking for something that's easy and works, then this is the book for you. Some of the others get too technical and bore you with too much text and no examples. All you need is yor book and a mirror and you are on your way. Happy, thanks friend........

The exercises are great and easy to do. And they work. A lot cheaper than all those creams and peals etc.. BUT you have to do them!!!

perfect

It was a gift & the individual was very pleased with it.

IT'S OK

From School Library Journal

Grade 11 Up–A revision of the Fall as written in Genesis, The Garden is told from the perspective of Eve, a quizzical woman who questions everything from her own "birth" to God's authority. Aloof and careless, Adam is the more physical of the two; he enjoys the paradise of Eden, running with the antelope each day, never paying attention to the lessons that his didactic God has to offer. The two other characters in the novel are God, an authoritarian who views his children as toys, and the Serpent, his close friend and Eve's kind and understanding mentor. By writing from Eve's point of view, Aidinoff proffers an alternate perspective on an old story, but, unfortunately, the book ends up reinforcing old ideas, that women are more "emotional" and men more "physical." In the climax of the story, God impulsively, in an effort to see the fruits of his creativity and labor, forces Adam upon Eve. This rape leads Eve to distrust God and eventually–with the Serpent's help–leave the Garden. The Genesis story has incredible revisionist possibilities, but the characters here are flat and uninteresting, and the simplistic dialogue is not compelling. Ultimately, the author's effort to retell the "Fall" in a fresh way frankly falls, and fails to do just that.–Kelly Berner Richards, St. George's School, Newport, RI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. In this provocative retelling of Genesis, modern values such as freedom, independence, and equality are juxtaposed with a definitively Old Testament God--petulant, controlling, jealous, and easily angered. God wants his creations to do as he says and is disturbed to find that they have minds of their own, minds more complex than he ever envisioned. He created human beings to amuse and worship him, not to go around questioning him.The story is told from the first-person perspective of Eve, who is a curious, artistic, and brave. She can't understand why God made her physically weaker than Adam and wants to run with the gazelles as he does. The serpent is recast as Eve's mentor, a wise being as ancient as God who recognizes the necessity for Adam and Eve to learn their own lessons and to think for themselves. He does not trick them into eating the apple but lets them know exactly what they will be gaining (freedom) and what they will be giving up (ease and safety). The book is written in simple but poetic prose that is easily gobbled up. I finished all 400 pages in a day. Despite the fact that I already knew the ending, I still wanted to keep reading. Eve is a well-realized and sympathetic character, particularly for young girls. Adam is not so well-developed, but this is really Eve's story. Furthermore, The Garden questions pertinent issues such as death, the soul, justice, free will, obedience, science vs. religion, and whether God is omnipotent. Some of the most interesting parts of the book concern Eve and the serpent's philosophical discussions. To many critics, this book is unsatisfactory merely because it calls into question the established religious dogma. To me, this kind of questioning is a good thing. I don't think Aidinoff is trying to start a new religion here, but merely to ask...what if?

Most lovely retelling of the Adam and Eve story as related by Eve. You'll have trouble relating to the serpent in the old way.

I read this in highschool for my women’s literature class and that was 10 years ago and I still think about this book often! Wonderfully written and not what you’d expect when thinking about Adam and Eve!

Everything about this book is compelling. I loved the perspective of Eve, the unique take on the Serpent, and how the author portrays old testament God. I can see how some religious sticklers may not appreciate it, but I enjoyed the storytelling. The relationship between Eve and the Serpent was beautiful and I have read this book several times just because it's such a good story.

I loved this book. It gave a whole new perspective to the world's oldest story. The story was very engaging and thought provoking, and the text was so descriptive. I was able to picture everything the characters were experiencing quite vividly. The most fascinating aspect was my new perception of the serpent. This book allows the reader to really accept a new view of a story we have heard for years.

One of my favourites. Very controversial.

I use to own this book! It got mixed up with donated books last summer, I have been searching for itever since. It was just a cheap book I picked up in a bin on sale, I read it. It is very unusal, and mostinteresting, I intended to add it to my collection. However this particular copy is written on terrible paper, and the cover, well It just isnt like the one I hadand it cost me more than the first! If you are interested in reading this and dont care what its written onthen I suggest you go right ahead and buy..

I found it to have a very childish perspective on God and the garden in general.

I have been following the peer-reviewed medical literature for over a decade and marveling at the continued disconnect between the sheer volume and span of research supporting whole food, plant-based diets and the public perception of what constitutes healthy eating. Dr. Garth Davis, MD, a Texas bariatric surgeon, combines his personal story of transformation with a review of research highlights from the past 20 years. To his credit, it’s a quite enjoyable read. The research is generally in three categories: epidemiological studies of thousands of people over years (and often decades) of time; studies of naturally-occurring populations with exceptional health and longevity (the Blue Zones) versus those without; and clinical experiments. Dr. Davis shows that, taken as a whole, the research overwhelmingly supports whole food, plant-based diets with small or no red and processed meat consumption and much lower intake of animal products than our nation of "Proteinaholics" is currently eating.I like that Dr. Davis takes on common objections raised by people favoring animal product-heavy diets, and I really like how he explains how to look at research studies so as to be a smart consumer of the research. He tells readers to ask what is being compared, how large is the sample population, and how long are the people studied. Short-term studies showing that low carbohydrate or “Paleo” diets improve weight or biomarkers after a few months exist. Dr. Davis explains that the famous Twinkie diet also improved biomarkers and weight. But if you cut through media hype, industry-funded research, and short-term studies to look at what matters most—all cause mortality over decades of time in large populations (i.e., what people who live longest eat)—then the medical literature casts no doubt on Dr. Davis’ conclusion that excess animal protein is killing us, and plant-based whole food diets are most healthful and lead to greater longevity. In fact, thousand of studies confirm it, as evidenced in part by the World Health Organization’s post-publication announcement on red and processed meats and cancer. And if you don’t like epidemiological research, Dr. Davis takes you on a trip through the other major research as well (population studies and clinical studies) so you can form your own conclusions about the healthiest dietary pattern. Unless you go step-by-step through the overwhelming evidence yourself, its hard to believe so much exists and yet we continue to be so confused as a nation.Another thing I like about this book is that even though Dr. Davis is personally vegan, he doesn’t cherry pick what he presents or overstate the case. I can say this with confidence because I’ve been following the research myself. Where the research findings are mixed and/or muddled by industry-funded research, e.g., on eggs and dairy, Davis presents an excellent and objective overview. His basic point is that whereas the preponderance of evidence points to a plant-based whole food diet—and we know animal products are unnecessary—we can’t say a purely vegan diet is the only healthful path if the overall diet is whole food and plant-based.Does Dr. Davis review some studies suggesting it might, in fact, be the case that a vegan whole food diet is best? Yes, but he is very clear that at this point in time at least, while we can reasonably suggest it may be the case, we cannot say that with anything near the certainty with which we can say plant-based whole food diets are the most healthful. I like to think of it this way: If two objective people followed just the peer-reviewed research published in scientific journals over the past twenty years, they’d both agree on about 95% of what to eat—they might bicker over whether the remaining 5% should include some eggs, poultry, dairy and fish or not. That’s an extremely small amount of diet to be uncertain about—far less than most Americans think science is in disagreement about—and would include vastly fewer animal products than most Americans eat. So whether you go vegan whole food plant-based like Dr. Davis or just eat 95% whole food plant-based, by listening to Dr. Davis, you’re going to lower your chance of disease by leaps and bounds compared to the overwhelming majority of Americans.Several adults in my family, including me, have transitioned to whole food plant-based diets over the past 5 years and experiences myriad health benefits. The benefits to my family members include: resolving IBS (which was probably lactose intolerance all along), reversing metabolic syndrome, lowering overall cholesterol levels and dramatically improving ratios, resolving adult acne, resolving PMS, effortless weight loss and maintenance (I weigh just 3 lbs more than I did the day I got married after months of dieting on Jenny Craig—two kids and 15 years ago!), eliminating the need for blood pressure medication, and improved mood.I have some criticisms of this book that are mostly just additional points that I think should have been mentioned. First, the bibliography lists Noto et al.’s 2013 systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies of low carb diets (of which Paleo is one), which found significantly higher all-cause mortality. However, I do not recall Dr. Davis discussing it in the text, which would have been especially useful in the Adkins and Paleo sections. Maybe he did and I missed it? It would be easy enough to check … if the book had an index. Yes, there is no index in this book! How in the world did a reputable publishing company like HarperOne release a book without creating an index?! This makes the book less useful to readers, as those who want to return to specific subjects and references later on in the text and will have to comb through the book to find them.A second point I’d have like to have seen Dr. Davis make is that processed meats include products people generally think of as healthier than pork bacon and beef pastrami—like turkey bacon, deli chicken and turkey slices, and turkey bacon. Granted, the doctor is correctly encouraging people to drastically reduce their meat intake, relative to the US average, but I think helping people realize that processed poultry was part of those higher mortality findings in many studies would have been helpful. If readers are going to continue to consume animal protein, albeit in small amounts, it would be helpful to tell them they can’t replace pork bacon with turkey bacon and think the research shows it’s cutting their mortality risk. Processed poultry is processed meat. Once again, before criticizing a book of this length in a public forum, I’d normally consult an index to ensure I didn’t miss something — but there’s none to check!Third, I think it would have been useful for Dr. Davis to further debunk the Paleo “grains and legumes are unhealthy” myths a bit more specifically. He alludes to the fact that the research supports eating these foods, and how much they are consumed in the Blue Zones, but he doesn’t even mention nor source articles like Wu et al.’s 2015 “Association between dietary whole grain intake and risk of mortality: two large prospective studies in US men and women” published in JAMA Internal Medicine, or Johnson et al.’s 2015 “Whole-grain products and whole-grain types are associated with lower all-cause and cause-specific mortality in the Scandinavian HELGA cohort,” published in the British Journal of Nutrition. Having never written a book myself, I am guessing that these studies came out after the main draft went to editing, but I still feel room should have been made for their mention. I’d have also liked to see more of the published research linking legumes and longevity discussed. Contrary to Paleo claims, studies show legumes and whole grains are associated with better health and longevity. I am very concerned that a nation of largely unhealthy and overweight people are acting on misinformation to cut out these demonstratedly health-promoting foods. The bottom line is that my criticisms of this book are that it wasn’t long enough, in that it could have fleshed out in more detail the information behind the key points and included an index. However, this is coming from someone who searches the medical journals for new studies on diet and nutrition in her free time, just for enjoyment because it’s so incredibly interesting to me. And if that’s the biggest criticism I can muster for this book, it’s truly an excellent one! I am so grateful Dr. Davis laid out the research for a general audience and that he did it in such a clear and highly engaging way.I put my money where my mouth is on this, folks! I’ve already purchased 7 copies and will probably pick up a few more. If you’re on my holiday shopping list, this is what you’re getting. :)[Edit November 23, 2015: Due to popular demand, an index has been made available by the author on the Proteinaholic website.]

This book is very well written and extremely well researched with an extensive bibliography. It lends confirmation to much of what I had already discovered for myself, and lends new info that is already helping me to get my weight loss back on track. By far the most common objection to going on a plant based diet is "Where do you get your protein?" If you have ever thought about cutting out meat but were worried it might cause you to get weak, or just didn't know how to do it in a healthy way, this book is for you. Dr. Davis has gone through the studies that seem to indicate we "need" meat and exposes what they really say. His extensive work with the very overweight also lends credence to what he has to say. It blows the whole idea away that carbohydrates are the evil in our diet with some very sound and verifiable research. To top it off, he gives his own personal account of regaining his health by stopping the obsession with getting enough animal protein. Also, I have to give him props for admitting where he was wrong and retracting some earlier information he had published for bariatric surgery patients encouraging them to eat a high percentage of protein post surgery. Most medical Drs. I know will never admit error even when it is right in their face. Probably if people would really try to follow the advice in this book, they wouldn't need the surgery at all. I also like that at the end of the book, he gives sample menus, and recipes for those who might have no clue how to cook without animal products in practically everything. This book could really save lives. Finally, as an animal lover myself, I was so glad to see that he understands and embraces the ethical and environmental reasons to dial back the consumption of animals and animal produced products. As full disclosure, I stopped eating any animal products (no meat, fish, poultry, dairy or eggs) over 3 years ago. I didn't do it to lose weight but I had high hopes. Although I had a good start, it stalled and has stayed stalled. After reading this book, I realized how I have sabotaged my own efforts to an extent by trying to make sure there was ALWAYS a "protein" in the meal. Sure, sometimes it was beans or tofu, but that gets boring and a lot of the time it was processed meat substitutes. After reading this book, I realized that I was often just adding calories (mostly fat calories) to meals that were already complete on their own. I've now been using only whole foods and not sweating over making sure I'm adding a large portion of a protein specific item to each and every meal, although I still incorporate a variety of nuts, seeds, beans, soy, etc. on a daily basis. Sure enough, the scale is finally moving in my favor after months of near complete stall. And I don't feel weaker, in fact, I have a lot more energy and am even waking up earlier.

Like many people, I wanted to eat a healthy diet but was endlessly confused about what constituted "healthy". I knew plenty of unhealthy vegetarians who lived on white bread and cheese. At the same time, high protein diets (even "moderate" protein diets like the Zone) left me dehydrated and feeling ill. About a year ago I moved to a plant-based diet. I already knew the benefits of eating this way (40+ lbs of weight loss, total cholesterol in the 130's) but what I really love about this book is how it relentlessly looks at the data. If you still want to eat your bacon after reading this book that is cool - but you won't be doing so uninformed. I love the way it systematically rips apart so many claims of the Paleo movement. I think the Paleo people are doing a lot of things right. They eat whole foods, they avoid dairy. But if you look at long-lived populations in the world there is simply no contest - low protein, lots of veggies and ample starch rules. It is no surprise that the people who have the highest protein requirements--not body-builders as you might think, but endurance athletes--thrive on a plant-based diet. You need look no further than the ultra-running community to find a slew of plant-based athletes who are thriving on a vegan diet. For me personally it has been great. Weight loss, more energy, better sleep - it has been a great change. This book and all the detailed research it cites is just a re-confirmation of my new diet choice. A plant-based diet can be used to effectively combat the Big Four: heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. All of these diseases entail a lifetime of medication. Why would you not at least give a new diet a try???

I received a free copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.4.5 stars — Dude, if this is the end of the series, I’m going to be really sad. Each story has been a fascinating look at hockey in a small town, and this one just brought that all together in the most perfect way. You can totally read it as a standalone, but if you do read them as a series, you’ll see how all the little events from the previous two books have culminated in the conflict/climax/resolution of this book. These YAs really do have a more mature feel to them, though this one was perhaps the tamest. There is a somewhat steamy scene, but it’s mostly cut away (and fits the maturity of the characters). But it tackles some difficult subjects, like hazing, bullying, mental health, and other subjects that are too specific to mention. I just loved the way the story played out. Ms. Cross really showcased how difficult it would be to take a stand against a toxic environment that has existed and been allowed to fester for decades. I could see this happening in a small town, and I truly felt for Jake and how torn he was over how he felt, and what he wanted for the future. If he’d just made the right decision all along, I don’t think it would have had the same impact…and I don’t think it would have had the same sense of realism. Anyways, I really don’t want to get into the plot too much, just know that I was gripped and that I was so happy with how it played out.Now onto our characters! Brooke was kind of fascinating, but I feel like we kind of got shortchanged on her story. We got hints of things that happened in Austin, and with her Dad…and while some bits were fleshed out, others were left more vague. I was actually a bit let down by that. And not only that, but there was no real development with what was going on with her Mom, and how that played out. Which is okay in some respects, b/c there was enough else going on, but then why have those bits mentioned? I also get it in that when something so difficult is happening at home, it can make sense to just compartmentalize it and focus on other things to deal. However, I LOVED the whole girl’s hockey team story!! While there was a part of me that was skeptical about the rate at which Brooke learned and excelled, in the end I’m not sure I really cared. I loved seeing the challenges they faced, and the support that Sheriff Hammond gave his team. I also loved seeing Brooke develop a friendship with Rosie.Jake was so not what I was expecting. I’m not sure what I was expecting, it’s been a bit since I read the previous two books, so I didn’t have a good memory of him necessarily, but he was so much more earnest and…just endearing than I was expecting. I really ended up loving him. He was hardworking, and caring, but caught up in the craziness that is Otters hockey. But deep down he was a genuinely good guy.And I really loved the two of them together. I felt the connection and the crushes on both sides, the fascination with one another. It felt real, and sweet, and just made me happy. They were good for one another.About my only complaint is that this book, like the others, had odd time jumps. I guess I don’t mind that happening, but then maybe mention the time in between. It just always took me a minute to adjust and be like “oh wait, so it must be like weeks later now”.Needless to say, I started this one late last night and stayed up way too late because I had a hard time putting it down (though I did eventually). There’s just something about the way Ms. Cross writes that sucks me in and has me compelled to read just one more chapter.

I remember reading the previous book in this series and thinking it was cute read with a bit of emotional depth so I was curious to pick up another book in this series. Here we have Brooke who is new in town after her father went to jail and her and her mother had to move in with her grandma. Her mother is having some mental health issues and Brooke is also dealing with some of that herself. Being the new girl in town is not easy in the middle of all that. Trying out for the new girls hockey team is her way of challenging herself and maybe fitting in a bit.Jake is the star of the hockey team and future captain this new season. High school hockey is the biggest thing in town and that comes with a lot of pressure and years-long tradition. Including a hazing ritual that he has to be a part of and goes terribly wrong. There are things about this author’s writing that I enjoy but there are also other things that I just can’t connect with. I do like that the characters in this series usually have to deal with some issues that make them have to grow and mature. That’s where our characters find themselves in this book, especially Jake. He’s in a really tough spot and some of the decisions he has to make have the chance of impacting his plans for the future. At the same time, ON THIN ICE was very slow moving. I’m not sure if it’s because there are some scenes that go on and on about things I didn’t find all that interesting or relevant to the plot. That could just be me. The plot, however, was something I enjoyed. I liked seeing these two characters help each other through some tough situations. But I can’t say we dug deep enough for my liking into what made these two tick. Or even deep enough into some of the more serious subjects this book tackles. I wanted more character development. Yes, there are actions that show the characters are maturing and thinking for themselves but I think we could’ve had some better development in the internal struggle of how they got there. This is still a cute read and if you’re like me and don’t usually read young adult contemporary, this author may be a good fit.

Winning from Within: A Breakthrough Method for Leading, Living, and Lasting Change, by Erica Ariel Fox

From Booklist

Negotiation-expert Fox presents a road map for understanding our inner self and then avoiding common traps as we interact with the world around us in business and everyday life. She explains her seven-step approach, including “The Big Four Team” in all of us: the “Dreamer,” our internal CEO who creates possibilities, and sets strategic vision; the “Thinker,” our internal CFO who clarifies perspectives, analyzes data, and manages risk; the “Lover,” our internal VP of HR who cares about people, feels emotions, and manages; and the “Warrior,” our internal COO who brings about performance, takes action, and reaches goals. The author also describes our “Transformers,” the inner “Lookout,” who signals what is going on inside us (feelings and impulses); the inner “Captain,” who coordinates the Big Four and chooses our best next move; and the “Voyager” in all of us, who seeks growth through new experiences and opportunities. Fox reports that the ability to “lead yourself” is today’s new leadership requirement, and this timely book is a must-read for library patrons interested in all levels of management. --Mary Whaley

Some fellow reviewers on Amazon have criticized Winning from Within because it is not a negotiating book. That is true, but not a cause for criticism. Winning from Within is not a book that is particularly directed to how to conduct a contract negotiation, how to buy a house or car, or how to sell your business. If you are looking for such a book, I will tell you a secret - the best negotiating book I have read is Smart Negotiating: How to Make Good Deals in the Real World, by James C. Freund, a since retired superstar mergers and acquisitions lawyer at Skadden. Despite Freund’s background negotiating mega-M&A deals, his book is focused on everyday life negotiations and is superbly practical and in my opinion even more insightful than Getting to Yes, the negotiating book by the founders of the Harvard-affiliated Negotiation Project who are/were Erica Ariel Fox’s mentors.Erica Ariel Fox’s Winning from Within, in contrast, is billed accurately as “A Breakthrough Method for Leading, Living, and Lasting Change.” The author focuses on self-awareness as a means to regulate one’s behavior to achieve optimal results. The book presents a helpful framework of varying personality traits, motivations and perspectives which it maps to the types of senior executives of a corporation - the visionary “dreamer” akin to the Chief Executive Officer, the strategic “thinker” akin to the Chief Financial Officer, the get it done “warrior” akin to the Chief Operating Officer and the people person “lover” akin to the Human Resources Head. Each of us, the author asserts, has all four traits within us, although one may be overemphasized to the detriment of others. The author posits that one should balance these traits through self-awareness and self-bargaining. This is achieved through our inner “lookout” which we can train to alert us when we take an unbalanced or misdirected approach, our “captain” which regulates the everyday manifestation of each trait, and our “voyager” which helps us chart our long-term direction in life.I found Winning from Within to be helpful in causing me to be more thoughtful and introspective in my business and personal lives, including for example in navigating towards a better result rather than trying to force a perceived “correct” resolution against another's wishes. I also recommend the book for others, especially if you are not self-aware (which ironically is hard to know of course). We are entering an era in which histrionics and unbalanced behavior in business increasingly is no longer acceptable. The partner who routinely yells at all his or her junior associates will, on average, not be as successful as one who is able to control his or her emotions in a productive manner. The negotiator who always aggressive will not be as successful as one who is able to equally bring to bear aggressive and collaborative negotiating demeanors when warranted. The same is increasingly true for interpersonal relationships outside the business world. The Kindle version of the book is well formatted and flows quickly. If any fault is to be found with the book, I believe it is that the author spends a little too much time quoting famous people.

A visionary book, probably before its time - but one to watch and return to in your development toolkit - both for personal use and mentoring or coaching others to achieve success in a world in dire need of profound ethical transformation. Combining memorable behavioral and cognitive bosses playing out inside our head (our "Inner Negotiatiors"), with a plethora of everyday anecdotes and case stories, the reader learns how to frame their behavioral choices, performance gaps and growth opportunities by better engagement of the these inner "big Four". The book turns sharply toward the end, providing one of the most articulate and practical presentations regarding the imperative for the increasingly popular movement towards mindfulness, increasing consciousness and wisdom, and personal transformation. One of Fox' summary conclusions: "To generate lasting change, you need to work on both the outside and the inside [of yourself]" Looking forward to the next chapters of this timely topic from such an accomplished and articulate author. [Also enjoyed the videos embedded in the kindle edition.]

Many companies face the challenge of transforming to meet the changes occurring in the world and in the business environment. Adaptive leaders not only recognize the changes that need to occur within their companies and organizations, they also look inside themselves and develop new approaches to their personal leadership and relationships. This book provides a framework for developing insight for the reader into his/her preferred responses and approaches to situations we encounter in personal and professional relationships. And, through development of insight, especially into situations that may not have gone well, the reader can develop alternative ways to handle situations, by changing his/her responses. Effective leaders work on themselves and are role models to the organization.I recommend this book as someone who led a major transformational effort within a top global company over the past 5+ years. When leaders gain insights into what drives their behaviors, and are motivated and willing to try new approaches, significant transformation occurs for the leader and drives sustainable business improvement. This book helps to bring to life the steps one can take to shift his/her own behaviors by understanding the underlying mindsets. This sounds simple, yet is very powerful in person and professional development.

Erica Ariel Fox takes on the concept of the "performance gap" (how so many of us, so often, set a clear, well-thought out intention to do one thing, and then find ourselves doing almost exactly the opposite) in an inspired offered up from a broader and deeper perspective than the typical business book. Brought to life by anecdotes collected from her own life and all around the world, the concepts here, inspired as much by eastern thought as western thought, can bring new light and an expanded awareness to the choices we make every day. And indeed, with that awareness, we are able to become more at agency in our own lives. Winning does indeed start from within, and Fox does a skillful, entertaining and inspiring job of calling us forward to wake up and dare to look more thoughtfully and more closely, not out there but IN HERE.

I really liked this admittedly very different way of looking at how we habitually react in order to create new options for our own behavior. It's informed by mystic religious thought, so it's going to feel a bit odd to those of the right brain persuasion, but after reflection the concepts and personas are actually quite easily identified and integrated. I'm not a fan of self-help books generally, and avoid the trend du jour at all costs, but I get the sense that this approach is going to endure as it's actually useful.

A very interesting read! I wasn't sure what to expect after hearing about this book on the radio, but something told me I would enjoy it - and I definitely did. The first two thirds of the book focused primarily on history, past studies and how people felt about sex (or sexuality) and mating. The last third pulled all this information together and compared it to how we feel today, in our recent past, and how we may feel about it in the future. In my opinion the author never pushed his own agenda or feelings about how one should feel about sex, but instead presented different interpretations and views to help the reader do their own thinking. Once I finished the book I didn't feel like I was just told what to think, but simply had a lot more to think about.

Without denying the seriousness of the authors's intent, "Sex at Dawn" is one of the most entertaining books I've read in awhile. The authors, Cacilda Jetha, a medical doctor, and Christopher Ryan, a psychologist, argue that human beings are not inherently monogamous and that our collective civilizational effort to shoehorn people into life-long pair-bonds goes against our biological heritage and has led to much unnecessary misery. They stake this claim on a considerable amount of reading into recent anthropological, primatological and genetic research; specifically, they say that, as humans share roughly 99% of their DNA with chimps and bonobos, and as neither of those species practices monogamy (and in fact no primate, except the gibbon, does), our own genetic inheritance tends towards polyamory. In fact, they trot out examples from such indigenous cultures as the Mosuo in China to argue that pre-historic humans were most likely not monogamous: widespread promiscuity promoted bonding among members of extended hunter-gatherer clans, reduced inter-group tension, and promoted sperm competition as females had sex with multiple male partners and rival sperm competed for the right to fertilization. It's not hard to understand why "Sex at Dawn" has been embraced by sexologists while primatologists and anthropologists have been noticeably cooler in their reception. The book is like a bomb thrown not only against the very notion of monogamy but also against the standard narrative in anthropology that pair-bonding is universal in human societies because women trade sexual access for food and protection. The authors make little effort to conceal their impatience and irritation with this 'standard narrative' and, indeed, much of "Sex at Dawn" reads as though it were written by an exasperated zealot (or over-ambitious grad student) who can't fathom why everyone else remains so in the dark. At the very least, it's not boring. But the book should probably be taken with more than a few grains of salt. First of all, "Sex at Dawn" rehashes an already well-worn Enlightenment-era belief in the uninhibited 'noble savage,' uncorrupted by the restraints of civilization. Rousseau was, of course, a proponent of this and Diderot's "Supplement to the Voyages of Bougainville" pretty much encapsulates Ryan and Jetha, albeit with more wit. As others have pointed out, there are instances of monogamous indigenous peoples too that the authors don't really consider. Also, they don't really respond to one of their central theses: if the adoption of agriculture was such a disaster (sexually and in terms of quality of life) for human beings, why did they persist with it? If agricultural village settlements forced human beings into a monogamous corset, why then did they persist with it for 6,000 years before the advent of the first civilizations? Finally, Ryan and Jetha stake much of their argument on asserting that 99% of human being's DNA overlap with that of bonobos, the most sexually promiscuous primates. Yet, we share the same percentage (99%) with chimps who are more territorial, aggressive, and somewhat less promiscuous than bonobos. Essentially, by privileging bonobos Ryan and Jetha over-correct previous writers's (like Jared Diamond) tendency to focus on our chimp heritage: we really need a book that tries to relate both our chimp and bonobo genetic backgrounds together.Still, for a book so steeped in academic research, it's a blast to read, except when the authors start to consider the implications of their own argument. Having spent 300 pages explaining how monogamy is so unnatural and sexual exclusivity is probably the main cause of marital failure (in their view), they then shy away from any prescriptive advice. They don't quite want to push marriage over a cliff and advocate polyamory (for males, anyway; they're even more reticent interestingly enough on the implications of their argument for female behavior) but the logic of the book tends in that direction. But, as Freud argued, we are stuck with civilization and its neuroses whether we like them or not. Thus, they can't quite advocate free love (not as long as we have private property, anyway) but they insist that marriage is a botch too. For all its strident confidence in our biologically-driven amorality, "Sex at Dawn" ends by waffling all over the place.I did love reading it, however, even when I recognized that the authors were pushing their case too far. At the very least, it gets you thinking about why so many marriages and pairings fail, why cheating is so rampant, and whether there is indeed an evolutionary legacy that is inimical to our social arrangements (rather than just instances of individual moral failure).

While the book presented some interesting scientific and historical research and factoids, it felt incomplete and slanted by challenging others rather than presenting the theory in an objective way. In proving that humans are biologically non-monogamous, it seemed more geared towards the male species and how they are wired with some smattering of information about women.Esther Perel has touched upon the gender differences while noting that statistically men and women are as likely to cheat. The authors reference her in some aspects but as with the rest of the book, it seems to cherry pick rather than be more thorough in presenting their findings. While the authors added a note to address why they provided an anecdote of Phil only, it seemed lazy to do so by not looking for some anecdotes or analysis of women's sex drives and motivations, even if complicated, and breaking down such complexities to also note whether women are as biologically wired to be non-monogamous as well.

Wow. I love this book. It had the power to change my mind about our shared past, social and sexual beliefs and present attempts to form a more realistic and compassionate code of ethics. Carefully researched and thoughtfully and humorously presented, I'm recommending it to everyone who is open to reading it

While a relatively easy read and presenting some interesting and new (to me) information, I didn't really see a central idea here other than people like sex and, as a western society, we're doing it wrong.Okay, point taken. So, what's the right way?

Honestly, everyone should read this book. It could save your relationship with your partner and with yourself.Even if you can't wrap your head around humans evolving from animals, taking into account animal behavior when considering how we as humans have changed over the years is eye opening. The final chapters shed light on human sexual behavior in ways I never considered. It has helped me understand men better and I'm sure will help my marriage and that of my sons.I'm grateful for finding this book and reading it all the way through. It's unlike any book I've ever read.

Incredible to discover the answers to so many questions (and wrong assumptions) we’ve all had about human sexuality and fascinating to see the pains we’ve gone to as a species to control that same sexuality. Especially eye opening (as a man) to learn about the suppression strategies employed by society to desexualize women. Say good bye to shame and ignorance and say hello to greater understanding, wisdom, and compassion for the sexual needs and well being of yourself and others.
