I'm a beginning archer but have attended a number of beginner classes, researched online and borrowed a fair number of books on archery. This book was one of the more useful and accessible books for a beginner and perhaps something worth keeping around as a reference. The author explains all (or most) of the necessary verbiage of sport, the parts of the bow and arrows and their functions, and how to develop good form. The book is mostly focused on recurve archery (barebow and Olympic). The book also has some resourceful appendixes in the end to help choose arrows, strings, etc.The book is sort of a technical manual to archery. Technical manuals aren't the most of exciting of reads but the author does a great job of using clear language to help the reader through the technical elements of archery. At the same time, he writes with a bit of heart to keep the beginning archer realistic and persistent in this new endeavor. This is definitely one of my better purchases in my entry into the sport of archery.

Hands down this is one of the best books on archery out there. The detail and logical explanation of why you do what you do and how to do it is superb. This is a detailed and dense book and in some ways more suited for archers that have some experience and can appreciate the detail given by the author-- not that first timers would not benefit from this book but sometimes simpler texts are better for the beginner. The great thing about this is no matter how long you have been in archery there are those "wow" never tho't of that moments here. Hands down the best book out there for serious archers. I am glad Anthony took the time to put his experience and expertise to print to the benefit of us all.I have learned a ton of information from this book and as a coach it has been extremely helpful.OK some nits to pick:1. Throughout Bear bows are mentioned a number of times along with their patent for the take down bow however, it was Bob Lee of Wing archery that developed the model for the modern take down- no historical mention of that. And BL is still building great bows and has not been sold many times to other companies.2. The author has a real love of aluminum arrows, but does not give carbon fiber arrows the same in depth discussion he does aluminum. No real spine charts for carbon fiber arrows tho those are available elsewhere.3. This is a dense book= good, but the print is on mat paper on which the print is lower contrast than it would be on slick paper and though the pictures illustrating things discussed in the text are visible they are often not of the best quality. It would be nice, perhaps not necessary, to have color pictures, larger and more resolution- for us hard of seeing folk. All that aside- hands down the best book out there.

This is, bar none, the single most complete, in-depth book available for traditional archery. The main focus is on target archery, but the bulk of the information is of tremendous use for bowhunters, primitive archers, and even compound bow shooters. Author Camera stars with the absolute basics, and takes the reader through electing a bow, arrows, tuning the bow and the arrows, stance, different systems of aiming, physical training, string making, arrow building, the mental aspect- everything you need, or want, to know. Whether you're shooting a modern ILF target bow, a hunting recurve, longbow, or a self-bow with arrows made from river cane, you need this book.However... while I am absolutely gushing with praise over the contents of this book, I am not as pleased with the layout and design. The page size is 8.5x11", but the margins are huge- 1.5" all around- which makes this book far larger than it needs to be. If I were editing it I'd either shrink the format or enlarge the type, which leads to my second criticism: The entire book is set in a sans-serif typeface that is a good deal harder to read than if it had been done in a modern face like Times or Century Schoolbook or Garamond. Last, the illustrations are too low in contrast, and don't reproduce as well as they should. I suspect the author composed the entire book himself using desktop publishing software. And as good as this book is, it really need a better production. There are a few technical issues I'd take issue with as well. The discussion of stacking- the way draw weight abruptly increases at maximum draw- is mainly attributed to characteristics of the limb materials, when it's really a matter of geometry and string angle. And I think wood arrows and self bows deserve a bit more discussion. Many archers, like myself, use wood precisely because of the simplicity, the connection with tradition and the enjoyment of making our own equipment.Even so, it still remains the first book I would recommend to any beginning archer. There isn't another book that even comes close in completeness or detail. The book in my library that focus on traditional, instinctive, archery aren't as good as this volume when it comes to discussing aiming methods. The last book I checked out on target archery (Archery-4th Edition: Steps to Success), as good as it was, didn't have half the material, and wasn't half as interesting to read. For all its typographical flaws, this is still a must-own for all traditional archers.

If you're looking for a book that goes into depth about every part of recurve archery with a focus on Olympic style shooting, this is the book to get. It explains everything you can think of-buying equipment, tuning, form, sighting, and more. It's also highly useful if you shoot barebow or traditional, as the different methods of aiming and form are also discussed.Don't expect something fancy with color pictures and glossy paper, but do expect a comprehensive guide of how to shoot. Even if you are a complete beginner, this book will address every problem you will run into and give you the correct fix, in addition to outlining every step you need to take. Even seasoned archers will benefit from reading this book. It's quite thick, so don't expect to get through all of it quickly. Both an excellent reference and teaching manual, I recommend this book to every recurve archer out there. It's also worth it for longbow shooters, but stay away if you're looking for instruction in compounds. The book is also more oriented towards target shooting, not hunting, so keep that in mind if you were looking for a hunting manual. If you can buy one book on recurve archery, buy this!
