Yes it has great full color images images and facts too, but I was not thrilled with the book. Why?First, I don't like it when animals are spread over two pages making it difficult to see the whole animal clearly.Second, I was deeply surprised by the lack of skeletons, given those are the REAL fossils evidence we are basing everything else upon. You would think that fossil evidence would be the main focus of the book or at least be half of the presentation and large images for each creature. Some fossil images were included, not always full skeletons, but most were pretty small and details were not very visible.Third, all those color images of pre-historic animals are rendered fantasy - its as if every page needs a disclaimer. I truly believe, if we ever saw a real dinosaur, I am sure it would be far different from whatever is depicted in this book. This would not be so bad except that over time we change even how the T-Rex stands... none of that is really solid.Lastly, seriously - if we don't even know what color the animals were how can we explain how they behaved? Have you observed a fossil crying out for alarm so the whole flock of them can fly off? Of course we can't observe behaviors like that in the fossil record. We can only know certain things from fossils like maybe what they ate or if they had feathers... so this book goes too far into fantasy behaviors which is a big issue with pre-historic biology and how its taught these days. Kids will enjoy this book, but I feel the science aspect is too tainted with fantasy in a desperate attempt to have people connect with the content.Overall, I got it for my nephews. Maybe they will get enough science out of to make the purchase worthwhile. I just wish they stuck to pure science and away from fantasy.
I love this book. My children are very into dinosaurs right now but they were craving more than standard child books provide. This book gave them the realistic photos, charts, facts, graphs, etc. but I had to dock it a star because there's no phonetic spelling anywhere in this book.
I bought this book for my dinosaur-loving son's 5th birthday. It is packed with content, and a great buy for the price. Even though it's not written for the comprehension of a 5-year-old, each page is split into different little sections of content, so it's easy to talk about each dinosaur together, and read quite a few pages at a time before the child needs to move to a different activity.I have one quibble -- it's a fairly major one, but somehow too petty to dock it a star. This book, unlike most dinosaur books, does not include a phonetic pronunciation guide next to each new dinosaur name. I know how to pronounce parasaurolophus, but nemegtbaatar left me stumbling, and I had to guess. It's hard to look up pronunciations when we're reading at bedtime, (and would also be distracting at other times). This is a pretty basic thing to have in dinosaur books, so I was very surprised by the absence.Besides that, the book is well made, substantial, and attractive. Any young (or old!) dinosaur lover would be pleased to receive this, I think.
If you have a young dinosaur enthusiast in your home—particularly a male one that is enthused about predation, size, power, and other "extreme dinosaur specs," then this book—at least the hardcover version, which we have—is absolutely a must-have.Each two-page spread treats one dinosaur or other large creature from the various ages of the dinosaurs. Each leaf has a similar format that offers:- A very large, very high-quality illustration and several smaller inset illustrations- A summary that provides an introduction and context to the species- A number of callout "factoids" that are referred to particular parts of the large illustration- One or two "surprising" factoids that are of the biggest, strongest, weirdest variety- Size, weight, and time period detailsIt's the huge, colorful, photorealistic-style images, along with enough text to make them educational, that really make the book. There are no "dead pages" for a young peruser.We've had this book for nearly a year now and my 5-year-old son knows it nearly by heart. It is his go-to "bedtime story" at this point. Every night, he chooses a couple of dinosaurs to have read to him. There are enough pages here that it never gets old or redundant—just dozens and dozens of pages for him to choose from every night. And every night he goes to bed chattering excitedly about the particular dinosaur we've just read about.We've got a lot of dinosaur things around the house—dinosaur models, action figures, learning sets, plush toys, themed vehicles, clothes, and of course dozens of dinosaur books. This one stands head and shoulders above the rest. Get it.
My grandson, age 6, loves science and especially dinosaurs. This Smithsonian book, while definitely written at a higher reading and interest level than early primary school, so motivates the reader with amazing illustrations and information. This is the perfect type of book for the young reader, It builds reading skills while acquiring impressive knowledge.
Bought for 3 and 5 year old boys. This is the only book they want to read...going on four weeks in a row. They fight over it because one loves pteradactyls and the other likes the T-rex. Not a bad problem to have my kids fighting over a BOOK! Admittedly its more advanced for my boys' ages but that does not deter them AT ALL. Great for all ages (adults like me included).
