Got this as a gift for misquided grandchild. Would not consider reading it myself.

Excellent! Important to review what has happened as we try to rewrite history. Reading this book helped to explain so much and help me recall what was going on. Perhaps if more people read this, we would actually learn from history rather than repeating. Should be required reading for all Democrats who are running for office.

this is a great book. Good insight into what happened in the "contract w/America." Great reading for anyone of progressive political persuasion

Foxes in the Henhouse should be required reading for any Democrat or Independent who loves this country and is unwilling to let it continue on the Republicans' disasterous course. (Any writers willing to say that Reagan couldn't carry LBJ's jockstrap are aces in my book!)

Too much of this book is spent on telling Democrats how they can win back the White House, and, more importantly, the voter's trust. Nice premise, but it lacks imagination. While they make a good case that Republicans lie their way into wars they can get out of and give taxpayer money to wealthy associates, authors Steve Jarding and Dave Saunders spend a lot of time complaining. This is probably what makes the Democrats. Democrats whine about everything and agree on next to nothing. There is no sure thing if you're a Democrat (nominating a decorated war hero for president to oppose a clueless draft dodger) didn't accomplish anything. Of course John Kerry had the charisma of a fence post, but that's another issue.One area of concern is the author's ability to gloss over reality. Take the opening sentence to chapter 5 on page 105. How many blacks or homosexuals, or any other left of center group could identify with the statement that "several generations of Americans had witnessed firsthand the power and compassion of a government dedicated to equality, justice, fairness, and opportunity[?]" Jarding and Saunders seem out of touch, way out of touch, with the plights of many Americans who likely would associate themselves with the Democratic party. The bulk of the book impl;ies that the best way to reach out to voters is to take a page out of the Republican's book. Isn't that what's gotten us into this mess in the first place?This book just never hit home with me. I like how they paint the National Rifle Association as a radical group that threatens our freedoms more than they support them. They also have a nice collection of quotations on page 197, but the overall impact misses the mark.

Jarding and Saunders provide a credible, well-reasoned, and easy-to-read critique of recent Democratic campaigns, along with suggestions for significant improvement."Foxes in the Henhouse" begins by dissecting the '04 Presidential election into numerous dimensions, showing that Bush had improved over '00 results in about every way possible - concluding that the problem was not that eg. "Bush was a wartime President - very difficult to beat" but that Kerry, et al, had run an ineffective campaign.Kerry's last mistake was ending up with $15 million in the bank, and 75,000 votes short in Ohio that he possibly could have won had the money been used. His first mistake - conceding the equivalent of 27 states (Bush campaigned everywhere) and their 227 electoral votes - 84% of the total Bush needed to win. Most of the 27 states were in the South, fastest growing area in the U.S. and an area Saunders had recently demonstrated as winnable via Democrat Warner's 2004 victory in the governor's race.The authors assert that character assassination is now a conventional weapon for Republicans, and Democrats need to fire back. Kerry, for example, should have immediately gone after Bush on the Swift Boat attacks, and called for a debate on military matters (current issues and past service), and held it in the South. They also believe that '04 Democrats mistakenly focused on the economy instead of the war on terror, and added Wesley Clark or Bob Kerrey to the ticket. (Another possibility was Sen. Graham with a 70% approval rating in Florida. a state with 27 electoral votes - enough for Kerry to win.) Instead, Kerry let himself look foolish on the topic by being framed with the "I voted for the "87 billion in spending before I voted against it.""Foxes in the Henhouse" claims that data show voters in the South and rural America increasingly voting primarily according to issues of patriotism (eg. anti-flag-burning) or morals (they also attend church more often). Republicans have taken advantage of this by using these polarizing issues, without even being burdened with pressure to deliver tangible goods. (Possibly part of the reason Bush II feels free to fill positions with little regard for competence.) The "key" to winning the South is utilizing means to connect culturally with its masses.The authors believe that the best way to start connecting is NASCAR - eg. sponsor a car. Another is country music - eg. rewrite a popular song to endorse a candidate and have it played regularly by a popular hillbilly band. “Spanish Phrase book for Travelers (with audio!)” is a great book to learn Spanish. I am a native Spanish speaker, and I absolutely found this book to be useful and a must-have for those who want to learn Spanish and are planning to travel to a Spanish-speaking country. The book starts with the basics (Hi, My name is, etc. …) and finishes with complex phrases that will help you make complete sentences and establish coherent conversations. I enjoyed that the book also contains how to pronounce each word! Spanish is quite complicated, and I think this book does a great job at summarizing essential words and phrases that will help you communicate clearly. There were some words and phrases that I found to be incorrect. Essentially the words were correctly translated but the context in which the word was been used was incorrect (Esta/Este, Esa/Ese, etc). However, it was a very small portion of the book. As a native Spanish speaker, I recommend this book.

I purchased this book because I am currently traveling through Central America, and want to improve my Spanish skills. I did not study Spanish formally, so I find it to be really helpful and easy to navigate. The chapters are broken up into topics relevant to traveling. I have been shy to practice Spanish with locals in the past, but I feel this book will continue to be a practical reference guide for me through my travels. The audio helps with pronunciation that I might not have known otherwise. Definitely recommend this purchase for anyone traveling through Spanish speaking countries, who might need a little extra knowledge and confidence with their Spanish skills.

I love that this book comes with an MP3, it really helps with pronunciation. I am excited to try to use what I have learned when I go to Spain in May! It is also really nice that the chapters are broken up into topics relevant to traveling.

Love the book, It's given me a hugely valuable framework for segmenting customers and opportunities that I've never seen anywhere else. Even though it was written more than a decade ago, it's still spot-on, and highly relevant!But the Printing is AWFUL! Almost unreadable. A poorly printed newspaper looks better than this. If I didn't need a couple of people that I work with to read this right away, I would have returned the books. They were printed on what looks like a 20-year-old inkjet printer - probably 300 dpi - with cheap, aftermarket ink.McGraw Hill, you should be ashamed of yourselves for letting your printer get away with this horrible quality.Even if these were mass-market, discount, paperback books, the quality would not be acceptable. But these are expensive, hardcover books.

The book is nearly 10 years old - but still is very relevant. The authors take the reader through an analysis of the Tranactional, Consultative and Enterprise sales cycles, skills, approach and characteristics. The key lesson, emphasized over and over again by the authors, is that "selling is not just selling". Each type of sales requires a different approach, a different sales strategy, a different type of salesperson, and a different selling expectation on the part of both the customer and the vendor.Much of what was predicted by the authors a decade ago has come to pass - and their insight into the psychology and strategy of sales along these three approaches make the book near timeless at its core. If you are responsible for sales or developing sales strategy, this book will help you think and frame up many questions to ask when your sales approach is not performing as expected.

It is a very good explanation how the sales process is boarded from a Buyer's view. The result is the change of usual analysis if you work as a sales person. How to engage with the buyer with a better knowledge of his vision is quite useful depending on the stage of the sales cycle you are. Also talks about strategies and makes reference to the specific activities you can adopt in your business to improve results when you sell solutions. Eventhough you have no experience in sales it could be positive to read it at a manager level.

Some of the books addressing the Internet's effect on business are so buried in futurist fantasy, that it's appliaction for selling today is limited. Rackham and De Vincentis do an excellent job of building a framework for viewing today's selling in an atmosphere of radical change including, but not limited to the Internet's effect on business. Filled with relevant examples, and clear advice about what works and what doesn't; I found the book very valuable in thinking how to apply new age selling to old work products. The premise of the book is that Sales must be about creating value for the customer and not just communicating it. How this is done is dependent on the nature of the sale: transactional, consultive, or enterprise and the structure of the sales channel. They warn against the ctitcal mistakes of applying the wrong solution for the wrong type of sale: If you are in a transactional situation (cost and price driven) it would be disastrous to apply a consultive or enterprise solution. They also warn that while our egos may want us to think that we want a consultive or enterprise relationship, that these types of sales are much tougher that we think, and that enterprise sales specifically are rarely successful for both parties. This is solid usable information. It should be a part of your thinking on sales strategy.

There have been many changes in how our customers buy. The two biggest influencers are the Internet and the crowded marketplace. Rackham's book was published in 1991 and laid the foundation for new thinking in how we align with our customer's buying processes and create value, reduce costs or become easier to do business with. B2B companies that do not follow Rackham's lead are doomed to become commodities. Every student of professional sales processes should have this book.

This book includes key considerations about the nature of large sales and shows, by means of contrasting with smaller sales, the specific requirements for success in this field.
