We love every book in the Wolves of Willoughby Chase series, but this one may be the most fairy tale-like of them all. Interesting plot twists and unexpected connections keep the reader turning the page. By the way, our suggested order of reading the series is: Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Blackhearts in Battersea, Nightbirds on Nantucket,The Whispering Mountain (This backtracks to give a "prequel" of Owen's story), The Stolen Lake, Dangerous Games, The Cuckoo Tree, Dido and Pa, Is Underground, Cold Shoulder Road, Midwinter Nightingale, and The Witch of Clatteringshaws.

Loved this book as a child, and rereading it now (many, many years later) I cringe at the breathless antics of Bonnie and the somewhat spinelessness of her cousin, but the adventure as a whole is satisfying. I recently saw there were some other books set in this universe but haven't dared read them in case it shatters the pleasant memory of this one.

This story starts in wintertime, when the wolves of the English country wolds are starving and roaming in packs to bring down anything they can. Into this world comes shy, young Sylvia, sent away from her aunt in London to be the companion and playmate to her cousin Bonnie Green of Willoughby Chase. After a harrowing train journey, Sylvia arrives and is warmly welcomed by the effusive, hoydenish Bonnie. The next day sees the departure of Sir Willoughby Green and Lady Green, bound overseas for poor Lady Green's health. The girls are left in the charge of the new governess, Miss Slighcarp, whose true evil nature is revealed upon the parents' departure. In short order, she dismisses all the servants except a handful of the worst ones (and one who only pretended to be bad so he could stay on and watch over the girls), sells the furniture and pockets the money, takes away all of the toys, and locks Bonnie in a cupboard. With the help of James, the loyal servant who stayed on to watch over them as best he can, they discover that Miss Slighcarp has truly nefarious plans for Willoughby Chase. But when the girls try to solicit outside help, they are discovered and sent away to an orphan school run by Mrs. Brisket. At the school, their life is one of drudgery, harshness and hopelessness until one day, a young boy from the wolds by Willoughby Chase comes to find them and help them escape. But where will they go?I read this book aloud to my six and seven-year-old daughters. And what a grand adventure it was! Set in Victorian England, this story had all the plot elements guaranteed to keep my girls glued to the story as I read it aloud to them. They Ate. It. Up. It's a story that probably works best as a read-aloud the first go-round. The language structure is perfect for the story, old-fashioned, reflecting perfectly the age in which the story takes place, although the story itself was written in 1962. But it might be harder for children who have never been exposed to that antiquated structure to follow, which is why I suggest reading it aloud first.I had so much fun reading this aloud. It was such fun giving life to all the wonderful characters. The names of characters make me laugh, they're so deliciously perfect for a book set in this period: Pattern (the maid), Miss Slighcarp, Mr. Grimshaw (the accomplice), Mr. Gripe (the lawyer), Dr. Morne, Mrs. Brisket, Mr. Wilderness, etc. And the internal pictures by Pat Marriott have a vagueness that adds splendidly to the menacing feel. (The cover illustration is by Edward Gorey. Isn't it wonderfully sinister?)If you are looking for old-fashioned Victorian adventure story, with Gothic elements, plucky heroines, nasty bad 'uns, then this is the story for you.

A great story that we listened to in the car when our children were young, checked out from the library. I was so pleased to find this available, and I am greatly enjoying listening again. A British novel for young teens, read in a marvelous British accent, full of adventure. Both children and adults enjoyed it in our family.

and now, I'm reading it to my 6th grade son.We are still working through it, but he's enjoying the book. At first, it wasn't grabbing him. We needed to get a few chapters. I think if we'd started with Wolves of Willoughby Chase, which is where Simon is first introduced, he would have understood the beginning better. That said, the book does stand on it's own. Also, the first chapters are self-explanatory and get right into who the characters are. I especially like Dido Twite. She figures prominently in several of Ms. Aiken's later books, but this is where you see her character growth.

The book itself may not be terribly long, but it packs enough content and suspenseful storytelling to keep the reader involved throughout the entire adventure regardless if you are a child or an adult.I first read this book when I was in the fifth grade, and it stuck out from other books so much that I picked it up every year until high school. The book inspired me to write and expand my creativity in ways few books could at that time in my life.I won't go through the plot or progression of the story because I know the synopsis and other, more detailed, reviews will explain it well enough, but I highly recommend reading this book or picking it up for your children if you have any.

If you did not read this as a child, it's not too late. Keep one for yourself, and buy more for the loved ones in your life. Fantastic holiday present for children of all ages.

They are nice designs and although they are kind of tricky to cut out, if you've been cutting out of paper dolls for a long time, it's not that bad. Sometimes you just need sharp scissors.

All of Tom's books are great, but I really love this one. The styles in the thirties changed a lot from the sleek bias cut dresses of the early thirties to more fabric and heavier looks later. The designs and designers featured are great choices.

Tom Tierney does a great job with his books. He does the research for me when it comes to costume design for stage productions.

Good, fun adventure story! Reminds me of Nancy Drew with a more modern day high-tech twist. Can't wait for more adventures from Sara and Margo. I would recommend this series to everyone of all ages!

What a fun book to read.Sara and Margo are off on another adventure. It seems mystery follows them around. Together with a couple of friends from home, they meet Alex when on vacation and the adventure is off and running. This was to be a fun quiet vacation but changed rapidly when the kids find a box of money hidden in Alex's fort. Horses, a flying drone, and a mini submarine along with other gadgets, sailing and swimming make this adventure fun for any child on summer vacation from school. I highly recommend this book to both girls and boys.

I LOVED this book! Two young and adventurous sisters paired with drones, smartphone apps and friends, get caught up in another adventure. Good, clean fun and an easy read. This book had a few " edge of my seat and hope they get away from the bad guys" moments, that I enjoyed.

As with any pharmacology book, there is a lot of chemistry-related topics involved. I am not very competent when it comes to chemistry and I was lost many times in this book. At times I felt that Rau spends too much "chemical-jumbo". I found these parts of the book to be very heavy noticed myself re-reading several sections in the chapters.Given that, this book (which we referred to as Rau in our class) is structured well and I noted that I was building up as I was reading. There was never a moment where I felt like, "What is Rau talking about?" because I had reviewed it in prior chapters. This book is great to use as a manual because it contains so many useful diagrams are pictures.I would definitely recommend this book to those in the health field who need to learn more about, well, respiratory care pharmacology.1. Would I read it again? Yes, but only as a reference.2. Is this a keeper? Probably not, because pharmaceutics are constantly being updated; and you would not use this unless you are a student or going into research.

Steve Cyr takes you on a journey through the underbelly of Las Vegas casinos. What you thought you knew about Casino Hospitality was way off. How Cyr tries to separate the blubber from the Whales and by the way does a great job of it. Cyrs the type of guy who’ll take your eyes and tell You look better without them. And you’ll believe him. One of the best reads in a long time.

I liked the content. This book provides an inside and behind the scenes look at how casinos recruit, satisfy and ultimately monetize the highest bankrolled casino players. Some of the writing is a little over the top, for example vanity type references to Mr. Cyr. The editing is terrible. There are a number of grammatical and spelling errors in the Kindle edition. I was able to overlook these and enjoyed the book. Be warned, the proofreading quality of the Kindle edition is not consistent with other book. This is a unique insight into a secret world.

This is a super book about the meanest, most exciting, very competitive and very efficiently run gaming industry. Las Vages portrays itself as a paradise with its beautiful women, luxurious surroundings and the aura of instant riches but in reality it is hell for all those who fall under its spell. Las Vages displays the very best and worst of American capitalism. It amazes me how the gaming industry is run with such sophistication and efficiency. I highly recommend this book

Whale Hunt in the Desert gives a behind the scenes look at the world of casino perks and services offered to the highest wagering elite of the gambling world. It is also a bio of Steve Cyr who was amongst the elite of the hosting profession while he was still in his 20s. Anyone who has an interest in the Las Vegas lifestyle would find this book to be of interest as would someone who just wonders what life is like for those who live 'behind the velvet rope' of wealth. If its legal, its available... if its not legal, it still might be available free of charge to high rollers who frequent Sin City.

The smut of the Las Vegas underbelly. If the dirty secrets of an industry tickles your fancy this book will do it for you. The writing style and vocabulary of Deke Castleman is nothing not worthy if you're coming from other biographical writers such as Walter Isaacson or Ashlee Vance. Still, an enjoyable quick read.

About 1/3 is interesting and fun. The rest is bland and very repetitive about the comps and hotel rooms different players want and get. The part about girl and sex in Vegas was too long and strayed too far from the main topic which is high stakes gambling and the "whales" that come to Vegas. It was a chore to finish it. Do I know more about how Vegas works and the lives of the high rollers, yes for sure. Could I have read what I needed to about that in 1 hour instead of 8... yes.

Far from expectations I had for my first travel book, yet quite impressed.I was intrigued by the artistic and philosophical approach that De Botton used to describe travel experiences. I've gained much insight from works of 18th and 19th century writers and artists including: Humboldt, Flaubert, Wordsworth, Thomas Gray, Van Gogh, Ruskinsnd De Maistre.I encountered many quotes that resonated with me, including:"Journeys are the midwives of thought. Few places are more conducive to internal conversations than a moving plane, ship or train.""There are certain scenes that would ASEAN atheist into belief without the help of any other argument.""A dominant impulse on encountering beauty is the desire to hold on to it: to possess it and give it weight in our lives. There is an urge to say, 'I was here, I saw this and it mattered to me.'"I recommend this book to fellow travellers and art lovers.

Wow, what a thought provoking book! For someone who has a ferocious appetite to travel (and does both personally and for work) it gave me a fresh perspective on how one should go about traveling and experiencing the world. This is a story of de Botton's experiences intertwined with stories from some of the greats of our history (e.g. Pascal, Neitzsche, Baudelaire etc.). It literally takes you on a journey from the anticipation of travel all the way through to the return to your home and life.I normally would read this book quite quickly however throughout there were sections that made me stop and reflect on my own travel experiences. At each page turn my values and approaches to travel was challenged and critiqued and I loved it!Three key takeaways from the book:1. I'm torn between Pascal's perspective of truly enjoying and taking in a historical artifact (or art) versus being an artist where you take in what you see and then create something unique and creative that enhances the experience for you and for others. I believe that there is room for both depending on the situation. Such as life today where people photograph and video things versus stopping to just enjoy the experience.2. We want to be happy in our lives and travel seems to provide us with a mechanism to do that. The problem is that we only experience this happiness while traveling because we are outside of the constraints of work and our struggle to survive3. De Botton advocates travelling alone to be an advantage. He believes that responses to the world are molded by the company that we keep, therefore we align our curiosity to fit in with the expectations of others.

I really like Alain de Botton, this is the 4th book by him I have read, I also love to travel, so this seemed like a perfect fit, but even though there are some very original thoughts about the experience of travel in the bottonesque style that I have come to love, the book seemed slightly boring and I had some trouble finishing it, which didn't happen at all with Essays on Love, Status Anxiety of The joys and sorrows of work. It is still insightful and well written but I found myself repeatedly losing interest.

De Botton arranges his subject in the relaxed sequence of Departure, Motives, Landscape, Art, and Return. Each section except the last has two sub-chapters. Departure, for example, has "On Anticipation" and "On Traveling Places." Typically an author, artist, or journalist's sense of travel is introduced through their work and the theme is expanded; sometimes with other artists, sometimes with personal stories of De Botton. The book is rich in literary and artistic references.De Botton deeply explores the sensations of travel. He opened my mind to ways of feeling travel that I may have remotely felt but not had the skill to dwell on and fully develop. I say "immersive" because the book is an experience. Meandering, but gracefully guided by De Botton, I emerged on the other side of my reading as a different person, a more sensitive and attentive traveler. Unthought-of possibilities of thinking, doing, and feeling while traveling are now in my mind. I have a kinship with De Botton, but also with his subjects like Baudelaire, Flaubert, Edward Hopper, the explorer Humbolt, and Ruskin. Excellent company!

De Botton's book is another that I came across at the library in which I work. I was so enamored of it that I had to own it (3 cheers for Amazon!) The book is a series of essays ("On Anticipation", "On the Exotic", "On Possessing Beauty", etc.) interspersed with black&white reproductions of paintings and photographs.Each essay/chapter contains a place/places and a "guide/guides." For example, in #2 ("On Travelling Places"), the "guides" are French poet Charles Baudelaire and American painter Edward Hopper. Using quotes from the former and paintings from the latter, de Botton evokes the romance of airports and train stations and other places of arrival & departure--how they are the stuff of hopes, dreams, inspirations.He also writes of the joy of the journey itself, where one is transported not only away from the physical familiarity of home, but into a state of suspension, where--for a time--the worries & complaints of everyday living don't exist. I have experienced this sensation as well as the joys of anonymity--an experience which can transform even a cheap motel room into a sanctuary from daily demands.Hightly recommended.

Previously she worked at the National Center for Electron Microscopy, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and has also been a Visiting Scientist at Lunds Universitet, Sweden and an Adjunct Professor at Arizona State University. She received the UK Institute of Physics Boys Medal, the MRS Outstanding Young Investigator Award and the MSA Burton Medal, holds an Honorary Doctorate from Lunds Universitet, and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Materials Research Society, the Microscopy Society of America and the American Vacuum Society.
