N. Gregory Mankiw is Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics at Harvard University. He studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. Dr. Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals, such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Quarterly Journal of Economics, and in more widely accessible forums, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Fortune. Dr. Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. Chances are you are buying this book because you're taking the microeconomics class online. Because there's like the 10th or 11th edition available now and probably taught in colleges across America. What did they change between the 5th and 10th or 11th edition, you ask? Who knows. I'm positive the publishers don't. They're too busy counting their millions, lighting their cigars with $100 bills and throwing kittens out of 40-story tall buildings and making children cry to drink their tears. So you're buying this extremely old edition probably because you're taking the class online or at a community college. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. This edition is just as or better than future editions. Trust me, I've looked. And I was the poor schmuck duped into buying the latest edition because my professor had it as "required" reading. We didn't even touch the book and went off his lectures anyhow. I dropped the class and took it online so I could actually learn about real microeconomics instead of the murky mindlessness of a quack teacher. This is a great book. Just don't overpay for it. Let's not get crazy. There's newer editions out there so don't pay a premium for this one.

This is one of the best textbooks I've had the pleasure of reading. The first thing that makes this book good is that the author does not fill the pages with meaningless jargon and unnecessary filler. He often dives right into the topic or sets it up by telling a short story that is relevant to the topic. Any kind of mathy topic is written in an easy to understand step by step process. He also provides graphs on many of these topics so you can clearly see what he is talking about, these graphs are accompanied with a short summary containing the important concepts. The author keeps chapters relatively short, though there are 1 or 2 longer ones towards the end. Chapters only take about 25-35 minutes to read on average. This makes them very tolerable to read and makes it much easier to retain important information. Unlike some textbooks where you spend over an hour on a chapter and then can't remember a thing you read, I actually felt like I learned a lot when I read a chapter in this book. The brevity of the chapters also kept me from occasionally looking to see how many more pages I had to go. I also enjoy the writing style of the author. The lack of jargon kept me from losing focus midway through a paragraph or forgetting something I just read. Topics tend to flow smoothly between one another and he often includes both sides of the debate on certain topics. He occasionally goes into real life scenarios that allow you to easily see the importance of the issue and the results of various real-life economic policies. Each chapter also usually has 2 or 3 funny comics or captioned pictures throughout them that are relevant to the topic being discussed. This book will clear up any confusion you have on a topic that your professor may not have explained the best. This is one of the few textbooks that I actually enjoyed reading through. I wish every textbook was this well written and informative.

Buy an earlier edition! This is literally the same thing as Macro by Mankiw 3rd - 6th edition. Way too expensive.

No need for hard cover text. You're literally paying 4 to 5x the amount to just have the pages boned together. When they say looseleaf they don't mean flimsy pages this is text book pages with a cover and outer page with 3 ring binder holes. I had a 2in binder and placed the pages in there and it worked perfectly. I saved so much money and it's brand new in plastic wrap so no one ever owned it before. I wish all my text books were like this!

I am currently a PhD student in Econ/Operations Research. I read this book (page by page) when I was 17. This (and the principles of Microeconomics also by Mankiw, but they are very similar) is my favorite undergraduate introductory economics textbook. Note that this book will not contain any heavy (or even medium load) math. Its a very elementary book, but it hits the important topics on what the field is all about. In fact, I still keep a copy with me (although I have not opened it in a long time). I would say this book really opened my interest (and perhaps my introductory understanding) to the field of economics.Verdict: Highly recommended buy!

I needed this for my Microeconomics class, the font was a good size and it was easy to read. The book provides many helpful graphs that make understanding the concepts easier.

The content of the book is very well done. The concepts are easy to understand and each chapter builds knowledge towards a very good understanding of the principles of microeconomics. There is of course much discussion and examples of demand and supply curves. I think the math behind these curves is important and unfortunately the book stays high level and doesn't provide more in-depth examples or tutorials on how to calculate curves, deadweight loss and other important concepts.

This book was a requirement for my intro level microeconomics course. I would like to being by saying that this book is an incredibly easy read. It isn't extremely boring and dry and it isn't extremely fun with little important information. It contains all of the relevant information. The way the book delivers the information is astounding. You read through a block of text and then the book displays graphical examples with captions below to help interpret the graph. The online homework that I had to do along with the book made retaining the important information extremely easy. Economics comes relatively easy to me, but the addition of this great textbook made getting an A almost too easy. I didn't even show up to lecture about one third of the time because Dr. Mankiw does such a well job of explaining the material.Pros:Easy ReadDistilled Useful InformationGraphical Representation of ContentCons:NothingI would highly recommend this textbook. It is probably the most efficient and useful text for learning introductory microeconomics.

Excellent practical treatment of the inductive Bible Study method. So much richness can be drawn from the scriptures if we know how to mine it. I've been a fan of the method since I read a Navigator's study book 30+ years ago. This up to date treatment gives ideas for how to mark various words with specific symbols to catch your eye and teaches you the Why questions you can ask that will help you go deeper. This has a companion workbook and there is now a hardcover Inductive Bible Study Bible with wide margins to keep your notes permanently. It follows the basic guidelines of Observe, Interpret and Apply. Lots of charts, worksheet and other tips. I plan to use this with my small group to teach them to go deeper in the scriptures.This is not specific to any denomination or set of teaching.. just a way to ask questions and examine the scriptures for yourself!

I purchased this book for an in-home Bible Study. I wanted a book that took us straight to God's word and not just opinions from the author. The author (Kay Arthur) does exactly that. Numerous scripture references, history of the names of God, biblical historical stories and as well as weekly scripture to meditate or memorize.If you are leading a group, it's good to know this book has some chapters that are long and typically the one following it is short. This is great in case you want to use the next meeting to continue the longer chapter as well as get into the short one. I had previously attended a small group who studied this book and now that I'm leading, it gives more meaning as I use the author's recommended questions. by studying the names of God, you naturally know Him better (as the title states) and know His character in a more meaningful way. You could use this study on your own as well. I find myself starting the names of God when I need to focus in prayer as well as in daily life. This book is guiding me to know Him on a more personal level.

I like the premise of the book - to really understand God in a deeper way by learning His names and what they mean. I have to be honest: this book has both encouraged me and challenged me. It has encouraged me in the sense that as I learn about who God is and see Him revealed in scripture in each specific trait (i.e. provider, creator, the God who sees, etc). I begin to reflect on and notice when He has revealed and is revealing Himself to me in my own life. It's really amazing. It has impacted how I live and how I pray. My faith has increased and I am quicker to turn to God when things in my life start going awry, with a greater level of trust and expectation, rather than the questioning of my faith or being angry at God. The challenging part for me was that in learning about aspects of God I tried to dismiss or justify in the past, I had to be confronted with the fact that God does not need me to justify or explain His actions or what appears to be the lack thereof. I've been challenged to accept that there are bad things that God allows to happen and that ultimately they all work together for a wiser, greater plan - even when people hate or blame God for it, He doesn't just change to accommodate us. So I've been pushed to study these concepts - of evil and suffering and God's role in it - in greater depth - and I continue to be both challenged by it all while feeling my faith being strengthened (ironically enough). The reason I gave it 4 and not 5 stars (I would have given 4.5 if it were possible) is just that I found a few of the chapters hard to follow - well, more like, I didn't always understand the author's reason for expressing certain points as they relate to a particular name of God. In this book, one name might be covered for 3 or 4 devotionals. And in one or two of those days, sometimes, I walk away unsure of how to apply what she's written to my life. But the good thing is that in one or two of those days there is always something very personal and practical that I do walk away with. So it's important to keep reading even if a lesson or two seems not applicable or personally meaningful for you.

This book was one of the best I've seen for helping someone study the Bible. I've been a Christian for around 40 years and love to read. I also have a degree in print journalism, so I've seen lots of books (some which should not be in print), and this one is in the top two on my list of Bible study helps, aside from reference books.

This is probably the best and most faith provoking book I have ever read. The book of Daniel come alive. I am still quaking with deep passion for the Lord Almighty knowing He will look into my eyes one day with such love ... I am changed and my faith has deepened by leaps and bounds. I wanted a different version, probably an earlier one. Most of the info I got this book for had been revised out, leaving much less exciting things. I would never pick out a book off of amazon again because of this.

One of the best books ever on the topic of corrosion. The book goes into almost too much detail at times and it's a bit hard to pay attention, but overall an excellent source.

An in depth exposition of the detection, progression, mechanism, and retardation of corrosion in the marine and near-marine environment. Choice of materials, proximate exposures, current-avenues exploration, are all covered in readable format. A great read for all engineers, steel product designers and manufacturers, ... should have an interest in corrosion issues, and knowledge to provide clear parameters for usage of their products. Consumers would benefit financially, and with reduced worry or doubt with ferrous material usage, if they pursue this topic. This book is a good introduction to understanding how and why corrosion occurs on a boat. It covers materials of construction in great detail with many chapters on various metals but is somewhat weak on a number of significant issues such as reference cells, measuring potentials, cathodic protection calculations and stray currents.

This is a really good book about Stevie Wonder, and really the only biography out there. Like his book on the Supremes, Ribowsky tells the story of Wonder alongside the story of Motown itself. The most surprising parts of the book are the early life of Wonder and his mother. The early pre and immediately post-Fingertips period and how Gordy kept holding Wonder back are very interesting as well.The issues I have with the book have been aired by other reviewers. Ribowsky is a little too deferential to Wonder, and he lets him off the hook far more easily than he does Diana Ross in his Supremes biography. While Ribowsky is clearly a fan and admirer (as we all are) he goes to great lengths and very purple prose to describe Wonder’s talents and career. At times the book is a tad boring, especially after Wonder’s big 70s run of hit albums. And yes, by the time you get to Innervisions, the author repeatedly makes reference to Rolling Stone’s best 500 albums list. It does get a little annoying, but only when you get to that part of the book. The author does go out of his way to laud Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life, Talking Book, and Fulfillingness' First Finale. And like I said, aside from understanding that these a great albums (on Great Album lists no doubt), you don’t really get a sense of why they’re great from the author.To this reader, the book gives a good overview of Wonder’s life and career, but I don’t think I learned anything about him as a person. This might be because Wonder is reticent to discuss his childhood in interviews, and Ribowsky doesn’t seem to stray too far into what really push Wonder forward. Still it is a good foray into one of the best musicians of the 20th century, and lays the foundation (I hope) for a better biography of Wonder in the future.

Informative and opinionated This was my first book on Stevie Wonder. It was full of information I had no clue about. I wanted to learn more about the album The Secret Life of Plants. The author focused on the charts and sales a lot. With a higher superiority placed on the pop charts. I was triggered by the use of the N Word not abreviated as the n word but in its fullness. I vehemently disagree wywhat the author describes as black racism when two groups of black people from different cities argue at the Apollo. A good read but the perspective of the book seems like an outsider to African American values.

Wow, if you only know Stevie from his 60s and 70s hits, you need this book. What an amazing life he has led. He was on the charts before the Beatles, Dylan and the Stones, and he's still selling out theaters today. He had accomplished more at age 17 than most of us will in several lifetimes. Now I know who the songs are about, how he wrote them. I have new respect for Stevie, and nothing but praise for the author and his book.

I consider myself a Stevie Wonderologist and this book had many great stories about him. I wish this was more information about his 70's period of music. It kinda painted Stevie as a lonely guy with not many people to trust. Overall if you are a Stevie fan you will not be disappointed.

I will admit.. I never knew much about Stevie Wonder.. But this book had some great insight into who he is and his rise to fame and stardom.I now understand why Stevie is considered one of the Greatest. He was the Michael Jackson of the 70's before Michael Jackson hit it big in the 80's. This man is literally a musical genius.I just wasn't fond of the detail analysis in this book's writing style. It really didn't have to be worded in the way it was, it took away from enjoying learning who Stevie was a man. It took me forever to finish.So for that, I give it 3 stars.

Daniel Matt is publishing the best translation of Zohar on the market. Though he's more an academic than a Kabbalist, and doesn't really try to learn Kabbalah from Kabbalists, trying to maintain his scholarly 'objectivity'. I don't this this applies to a mystical text, though, you kind of want someone schooled in the tradition to do your translating.But that minor critique aside, his translation is second to none, so however he gets there is incredible. I just think his commentary would be more fully informed if he had more schooling in the Kabbalistic tradition. Interestingly enough, his commentaries get better in the later versions. I think he may be getting an inside view of Kabbalah through his studies without intending to. But either way, best version of Zohar available in translation, bar none!

this series, I have read 1 - 4 so far, has been incredible.the wisdom hidden between the lines (which is really only viewable in Hebrew) has been tremendously insightful, the nuances of the words is so so deep, more than most can imagine.it's really easy to see why at one time the catholic church wanted to ban the bible and quran and institute this, though I am glad they didn't. The reason I say that is because true understanding will never come in only one language and in one series of books, but rather a conglomeration of all, but this series is probably the MOST enlightening of all of them.I would recommend this series to anyone interested in the faith.the only complaint I have about the series is that as a homeless and disabled man myself it hurts me to carry one of these on my back, and god knows I couldn't carry 2 or 3 as genesis and exodus are both 3 volumes each.this REALLY needs put on the kindle, I can't keep buying the hardbacks, my back is growing soft from them, I am physically in pain from it, I wish Daniel C. Matt and Stanford press would show some compassion and put it on the kindle, but I guess they are worried about their "profits" and not their prophets.

Through 17 years of work, and finding this translation provided by you along with the Aramaic (which is invaluable to a serious student!) - I was able to uncover the meaning of the prose... lost for some 3000 years possibly. I stand in awe of your work. The entire volume is excellent, but the Book of Concealment, will show itself to be the lost key. That which will lead us to a whole new understanding of what the Torah can be to us in our day. And show it to be a purposeful work and more than a mere artifact of history. And this translation of the Zohar and accompanying texts are phenomenal. This is a most excellent series of translations of these writings I can attest to. You are to be commended for your attention to detail and the fine scholarship you show in your work, (Mr. Matt.) I am presently awaiting vol. 8, and felt an update of this review was really needed.

Volume 5 of the Pritzger Edition of the Zohar continues Professor Daniel Matt's monumental translation of the Zohar. It is based on a critical edition of Zohar manuscripts and early printed editions so it is far more accurate than anything else available. It's not just a fine translation; it's a learned commentary. While I personally would have preferred to see the original text and the translation on facing pages, the text compilation that Matt produced can be accessed at no charge on the Stamford University website. Professor Matt is a leading authority on Jewish mysticism, and it is rare to see such a sensitive yet scholarly translation of such a difficult text.Anyone seriously interested in Jewish mysticism will want to purchase the entire set.

This book was well worth the money. I got a lot of questions answered that I had when I read the Old Testament of the Bible while more questions were formed in my mind from the teachings of the Rabbis. I gained a better understanding of why things are the way they are and how things came about; the book made me go back and search older texts, such as the Book of Jasher, it made me search and as God said, "all who seek me will find me." I cannot wait to buy volumes six, seven, eight, and nine. Thank You Mr. Matt for your gift to the English speaking people.

This is a great source of information for the potential franchisee. The writing is clear, concise and direct, laying bare the realities of an industry that is very prevalent but not widely understood by the layperson. The author explains in simple terms the many traps for the unwary that he was experienced firsthand in the before, during and after of the franchisee experience so that the reader may avoid them. Highly recommend!

The experience of failure can be just as valuable as that of success. The knowledge from someone who has been through this experience is invaluable. We can all get caught up in how wealthy we can become owning our own business. This awakened me to the preparation needed in case of failure. There are plenty of books out there that inform you on how to start a business or get into a franchise. I rated this 5 stars because it gave me valuable preparation tools that were new to me. Great book.

Great book. As a small business owner, I have considered franchising, but wanted to do research in advance. This is an excellent read, helping potential franchisees to understand the inner workings of the franchise business before investing. I'm glad I downloaded this book.

This is a very short read with good advice built on personal experience with a failed franchise. Everyone thinking of buying into a franchise should take a few minutes to read it.

This "book" is a joke. It's more like a pamphlet. I'll save you the $10 - do your research; understand the risks; don't be stupid; and don't trust anyone except your own lawyers and accountants.

Have not been a business owner but gives perspective of what is needed to be one. Sure good to read about someone who has gone that route and I will learn from this if I ever become a franchise owner.

Quick read and to the point. A lot of very good information here.

Definite read for those considering the investment!
