I was searching for a book that would provide a concise and easily understandable step-by-step guide to setting up a practical security metrics program. What I got was a disjointed and rambling master's thesis on how security metrics may be over complicated and turned into a program that would take 5 people and 200 hours a week to set up and maintain. If you are the CISO at Ford Motor Company, this might be a good book for you. If you are at a reasonably sized organization and are trying to share pragmatic security metrics with your board, or senior management, this is the farthest thing from helpful. Of the four books I puchased on metrics, this was by far the most pedantic. The checklists mentioned in another review are non-existent, and the section designed to put theory into action are not actions, they instead come up with something ridiculous that would get you thrown out of a metrics peer review meeting, let alone a boardroom. Great for a masters thesis, or if you are in a job that does nothing else but security metrics, or you are recovering at home for six weeks from a car accident, but you still won't come away with much that is actionable.

For the people studying the IT field this book has good information. The forms can be adapted at the real work environment, very helpful. I will recommend the book.

Caroline Wong in her book, "Security Metrics: A Beginner's Guide" fills a much needed gap: how do make all this technology, theory and processes worthwhile.Every once in a while we get to read something that is so startlingly clear that we wonder why it took so long for somebody to write it. It isn't that we didn't know each step, it's we needed somebody to put the steps in order so we can get where we want to go. Caroline articulates where we want to go in a well thought out, logical, calculated and justifiable manner. Caroline provides the objective, justification and process for creating an exquisitely managed security metric program. She provides the justification for metrics, the approach to meaningful analysis, the process for defining and executing the project. The she demonstrates how to assure that management gets the right information at the right time.My only problem with this book is that the title suggests that it's not for seasoned or experienced security professionals. This is not just a beginner's guide; rather it is a practical and well-thought out roadmap for implementing a security metric program. Caroline even provides templates and checklists to support such a program. With this book in hand security teams are well armed to comply with the maxim: you have to measure it in order to manage it.

I am a security consultant and one of the more common questions I get is, "How do I create good security metrics?" I always recommend they start by reading Caroline's book. The book takes you through the basics of security metrics, what makes a good metric and what doesn't, along with guidelines on building out a set of metrics that are meaningful to you.I have had the luck to meet and hear Caroline Wong. When I read this book, I can hear Caroline's voice. It is true to her voice. Go search Caroline Wong on Youtube and then buy the book.

I have a master's degree in information security and have been in industry a little over a year now. After reading this book, I have a better understanding of how to prioritize my projects and utilize resources more efficiently. One of my struggles thus far has been to get buy-in from management. This book addressed some of my concerns by giving tips on how to use historical data and time parameters to my advantage. This is an easy read and the author does a great job of making the readers think by asking questions throughout the chapters. I believe this is a great guide for any security professional, not just beginners!

Caroline Wong has done an excellent job with providing the reader with all the important selling points for a Security Program. How will you know you are successful if you don't measure your results? In each chapter, she provides her own experiences with thoughtful and witty commentary. I love the checklists and templates she provides! With this book, you will get the results you need and drive your program ahead. Excellent, excellent book! I recommend it to anyone who is either entering into the field or others already in the field, but want a new look at how to measure their success.

I have never truly enjoyed reading until I discovered Robert Lawrence. Seriously I couldn’t put it down. As a college/pilot student, I learned more from reading this book than I have in any class at my university. He gives a detailed look at the pros and cons of being a pilot. It is both informative and humorous. I HIGHLY recommend this book to not just aspiring pilots but to anyone who’s ever been an airline passenger because it will make you appreciate everything they do. I think the most important takeaway from this book is IT’S NEVER THE PILOT’S FAULT!

The author takes you through what it's like being a commercial airline pilot. This is an easy and enjoyable read with dabs of humor along with insights and behind-the-scene views of being a pilot.

I'm avi buff, and I love long descriptions of what it's doing and which aircraft is being flown; what the pilot thinks of each different plane he/she flies.

Being a pilot myself, albeit in a much different field, I was curious about some of the details in the commercial aviation world. This book certainly provided a decent look at an average day in an airline pilot's life. I was perhaps a little more interested/curious in the off duty aspects of the day and left craving a little more on the front and back sides of a shift. However, I really can't fault the author for focusing his book about being a pilot, on the parts of his day that deal with flying. I will more than likely be looking at his other book about the airlines and look forward to the read.

Enjoyed this quick read because it was informative and written with a wry sense of humor.Provides interesting details of what "going to work" means for a commercial airline pilot.

Just remember this is written by a airline pilot who is in his early 50’s so some life choices will be different when traveling or dealing with people. Overall a great read for someone wondering what a typical day of an airline pilot looks like.

I have seen good C programming tutorials, and this is not one. It isn't very descriptive. It will introduce you to new library functions and not give a good explanation on it, and then it rarely describes the code snipets. The C Primer Plus by SAMS is far superior to this for learning C. Having said that, this book is decent in its coverage for UNIX system calls with C, in that it is easier for a beginner to understand the code snipets in this book as compared to other books I have seen. Other books I have seen require you to at least already be an intermediate C programmer, and use examples that require you to study the complex code snipets before you can begin to understand what is being accomplished with the system calls.The author/publisher hasn't updated this book with regard to hardware, and it talks about 286's, 386's, 486's and Pentium processors. It considers 16 bit and 32 bit processing, and it puts too much emphasis on 16 bit, when every compiler I have seen for C is 32 bit. It even gives suggestions based on 16 bit technology. It references DOS, and if anyone is still running DOS, they shouldn't be reading a book about programming. They should be reading about survival skills and moving to Montana and building a bomb shelter.So, to learn C, this isn't a good book. If you are dealing with the C/UNIX environment and are a beginner, the end of this book is decent for understanding system calls, as long as you already understand C from some better, more up to date source.

It needs a bit of updating for more modern computers.

Jack Hatfield is a masterful teacher. In book one he shows you a basic roll and then immediately has you playing a song. It's a great way to learn, especially for the short attention span (Oh yeah, I was typing a review). With Book 2 it's probably best to have some understanding of the banjo and basic rolls before attempting to dive into this book. It comes with a CD to hear the examples and tab instead of staff music. Gets you playing up the neck and in various keys so you're not just stuck in one position and in the key of G. I highly recommend this for anyone trying their luck learning banjo. My wife even got hooked on it.

I don't quite know what to say about this book. I went in to it thinking it had a lot of potential. The premise is dark and mindset of the cult mentality has always intrigued me. If you like horror stories and you see a book filled with cults, cannibalism, organized crime and pornography you think you've found a classic. Instead, I found some of the sections of the book to be too graphic and seemed to be more about shock value than creating a feeling of horror or suspense. I also thought the book ended to abruptly. The final section just seemed to come together to conveniently.So I gave the book 3 stars because, although I didn't dislike it, I also thought it needed some work to turn it in to a true horror story.

I grabbed this a while back while the Kindle edition was free, and then managed to forget what it was about in the intervening months. I forgot about the reviews I'd read. I forgot the warnings about the graphic scenes and subject matter. Until I came back here after reading it to write my review.The first part of the book, the fascinating tale of life "inside", was really engaging. I found myself wondering what kind of person's imagination would have this kind of detail. Are there people who really live like this? Even the stories I've heard of cults were not quite to this level, and yet it was all so plausible, even the really off-the-wall parts.This is the part of the book that really has the disturbing stuff in it, but really I found only one scene to be really excessive and even maybe extraneous in its depiction. If you have a hard time reminding yourself that it's fiction, you might have a harder time dealing with this half of the book.The half of the book dealing with the "outside" was a little less interesting, with a not-super-exciting plotline and slightly lackluster ending (as the end neared, I imagined what I thought would make a satisfying ending, and the actual ending was a little less satisfying and a little less plausible than what I came up with). But, it was not bad; it explained most of the events in the first half, and after spending half the book becoming invested in the characters, you do want to find out what happens to them!Overall a good read, not for the squeamish, and worth paying for if you didn't get it while it was free.

I think I could use a stop watch to time how little time it took me to read this entire book. It NEVER got boring, was always interesting and with a lot of emotion, good and bad. It took feeding the people to a new genre, a new level of "you got to be kidding" but since most of the people in this "cult" were born, served and died ( or were sacrificed ) and depending if you were male or female you were put in a role of different chores as they called it, you were put in a category or some sort or another.All I can say is I would recommend this book to everyone who was looking for a book that had me wondering if this could truly happen today or has it happened prior. Doesn't matter cause it was very, very good.

This is a story about what goes on in an unimaginable cult. Like nothing I've read before. Then what happens when the cult is done for and normal life (somewhat) takes over. This story gave you a choice to get to know the main character, and those around her, allowing a fair judgement. What is normal for one society is held up to ridicule by others. If you can keep an open mind and enjoy a peek over the fence where the neighbors are weird, you might enjoy this. This isn't a gory monster rag. It's got chops (Pun intended).

An interesting read. The description mentions cannibalism but it is not done in a gruesome, salacious way. The story unfolds in an organic way as a day to day play by play of life in an isolated cult. The events and situations just happen as a matter of course and to the cult members it's just normal life. No sensationalism. Things pick up in the middle of the book and play out to a logical conclusion, although the identity of the narrator is a bit of a surprise when revealed. Not your blood and guts horror, but an interesting story

Really 3.5 but rounded up.This is a hard one to review since it felt like 3 separate stories.The first is all introduces a cult type commune in the mountains. It was the best of the three parts of the stories. I guess it makes me a little morbid to think that since the story was all about how the village inhabitants live as cannibals as their way of life. The group is known as The Divinity and human flesh has been their sustenance for decades. Divinity children don't know their biological parents and are raised by the village. The story is told through the eyes of a 14 year old girl named Timber. It was such a different concept that I couldn't help but finish this section in one sitting just to satisfy my impatient curiosity.The second part of the story involves the secondary characters. These are Timber's "Outside" friends. Their back stories, while interesting, didn't have the same "I need to read the next chapter" feeling as the first part. Later these characters would become Timber's family and most important people in her life, but it felt more about them than Timber.The third part consists of the first five years of life on the "Outside". It is told through another source much further in the future. I liked this section because it had plenty of action and kept the story moving quickly. But this was my least favorite of the three parts since the ending is a little abrupt and leaves the reader to imagine what happened next. I felt cheated spending so much of the book around Timber to not have full closure on her life. You just kind of assume they all lived happily ever after since someone is narrating the story after the fact.What made this book scary for me is that it is actually plausible. There is no paranormal element to it to make it farfetched. As other readers have stated in their reviews, there is a little bit of everything: Friendship, Family, Love, Hatred, Sex (consensual and non- consensual) and Cannibalism. Be warned though, it is very gruesome and you will learn more about dismembering a body than you thought you'd want to know.
