I love these. My first grader and I struggled with math together starting at about three, me frustrated at simple mistakes I felt she shouldn’t make, her being upset at my frustration. I tried the “fun” math such as teach subtracting using her favorite snail candies and letting her eat them to take away, and other little tricks and nothing worked. I got these and we’ve created our own game with them and even grandma and grandpa and cousins and aunties have gotten into it with us and her scores have improved already in a few short weeks. Your never to old to learn how to add. These are working out great so far. I'm almost ready to subtract.

These are practically just paper. I will have to laminate all 240 of them to ensure they don't get ruined immediately.

We have the kindgergarten flash cards and like them. We purchased these because I liked the picture addition problems shown on the website as my son is young but interested in addition now. However those cards are not included in our box and it only has addition fact cards with no pictures instead. Definitely disappointed as these cards are the majority of the pack and we already have cards like that. :(

My son will go to 1st grade in the fall, and he loves it very much, and he is so excited and feel so successfully that he "conquers" so many flashcards

The discussion questions are excellent and the meditations that I have read so far are spot on! For the last couple of years I have had a few books by Edward Sri on my to be read list, but had not got to them yet. After reading this book they have jumped way up in that pile of books waiting to be read. Dr. Edward Sri packs a lot of material into this short volume on the Rosary. In 12 chapters and under 200 pages this book is about encountering Jesus, engaging Jesus through Mary and being encouraged in our faith through this devotion. I would see it becoming a spiritual classic on the Rosary over the next few decades. It is a wonderful book and a great tool for our spiritual life. I highly recommend it!

Easy to read and a great resource wherever you are in your relationship to Mary and her prayer, the Rosary. The book is small enough to carry to adoration. The Scriptural passages for each Hail Mary bead is very well done and helps me take time to think about different aspects of each mystery. Yes, the Rosary does take longer to pray, but its what we're asked to do. I am using the expanded reflections on each of the Mysteries during 1st Saturday devotions to do as Mary asked. The text is really good and long enough to allow one to reflect on any one of the 20 mysteries for at least 15 minutes. It also has some good suggestions in dealing with a wandering mind while saying the rosary, and explains why we pray to Mary. There is also a rich bibliography for further reading.

This is not your run-of-the-mill how to refinish or fix up furniture guide.It's not at the 'estate-sale chair to be rehabbed' level. It's waaaay beyond that.Instead, this is a fairly detailed guide aimed at fixing complex furniture-injuries, and repairing gilt details, complex carvings, chinoiserie laquers. It features instructions for mold-making, gesso and so forth.It does have some helpful information about WHY furniture splits, peels, cracks... and I've got to admit, it pretty much looks like you could throw an antique dresser once belonging to Queen Elizabet I in front of a semi, and these guys could fix it.But as a how-to handbook, I agree that the photos could be a bit more clear, and instructions a bit more detailed.It's an ok addition to my library, but not as useful as say 'Furniture Repair & Refinishing' (Ultimate Guide To... (Creative Homeowner)) by Brian D. Hingley, which was a lot more my speed (which is um... kinda basic...).

This is without a doubt one of the best books which I have ever read on this subject. Ina Brousseau Marx is not only knowledgeable in her field, she has the ability to convey information in a coherent and effective way. I am an owner of her Professional Painted Finishes which continues to this day to be a wonderful book and a treasure trove of information. It is rare that such accomplished technicians are also effective teachers and communicators. Ina Marx is, however, one of those individuals who continues to set new standards for excellence.

I've been interested in furniture restoration for a while and was looking to pick up a book that would provide clear photos and diagrams for use. The was not the case with this book. Other may disagree but I found the book frustrating as a reference guide and the instructions lacking in clear diagrams.Pictures were grainy, badly photographed, and did not show the intended result or initial problem they were trying to fix in an adequate way. The photos essentially looked like they had been taken by amateur photographers from old restoration projects and blown up for the sake of the book.The layout of the book was also somewhat puzzling. One would expect a clear well organized summary of typical issues with different materials and a well organized list of chapters that dealt with each issue in a clear and well laid out manner. I found that issues were discussed in general, then solutions were scattered throughout the book.

I gave this book only four stars so prespective buyers will not think this book, in itself, will be means to becoming a furniture restorer. Rather, this book will give someone a starting point so they can know what direction to proceed. There is not enough information on any of the techniques in the book to enable an initiate to perform credible restorations or to master any specific technique itself. That said, one piece of cardinal advice I would give. Never practice on the object you are trying to restore. Finally, a library of books, advice and instruction from someone in the craft, and experience, all beyond the scope of this book, are the requirements to become adept at furniture restoration. Also, the beginning of the book states, " to be a restorer, it isn't necessary to be a cabinetmaker." That's true, but it sure helps. After all that I recommend this book to anyone interested in restoration as an excellent beginning.

Just picture a book that over two pages shows you 20 photos of each step to make a cross stitch motif that has a stitch count of 11 x 11 and incorporates thirteen seed beads of two colors. The first two photos show you how to make a waste knot and where to bring up the needle for the first stitch and the last two photos show you how anchor the final thread and then the waste knot on the back of the fabric. Also on these 2 pages are the two graphs for the motif and four line drawings showing where the needle is inserted and comes out of the fabric.Who'd a thunk it? I've made cross stitch projects with beads but this is a new technique to me. Even though I'm in the middle of a bunch of projects, I feel like wiping my slate clear and making one of these projects right now...the difficulty would be choosing which one. Japan has suddenly brought forth a new book that will take the U.S. and Australia by storm. Japanese and Chinese embroidery books have been pouring forth recently and this one is a doozy to tempt beaders who make jewelry as well as embroiderers and needlepointers to expand their repertoire of stitches: we see how to incorporate beads in what looks like such a natural and easy way. If you are comfortable with basic cross stitch or have tried your hand at more challenging techniques like crewel, surface darning or trellis stitch, you will truly easily see how to jazz up your projects with bugle or seed beads. And it can be done with counted designs, transfers or free-hand drawings.I learned how to stitch as a kid when my mom handed me a stamped pillowcase and set me to making lazy daisies for the flowers, satin stitch for the leaves and back stitch for the stems. This book shows me how easy it would be to attach a seed bead as the anchor of the the lazy daisy or how to insert a bugle bead in the middle to make it pop. And use a bugle or line of seed beads as the full satin stitch or as an occasional little nugget that makes it 3D.My eyes are also lingering over the couched trellis stitch page with five rows of modifications, each in three colorways. The photos on the right display how to make the tic-tac board and then glam it up with beads. If you want to see how easy it would be to make an itty bitty flower design using waste canvas, look at page 10 with the six close-up photos and directions.I've never seen a book to be so filled with such close-up color photos of the stitched motifs lined up on the left page with the steps lined up on the right. Literally, the colorful little birdie on the left attracts your eyes and draws them to the right so you want to pick up a needle and get going right then and there. They must have studied subliminal messages!It's almost over-kill: on pages 18-21 are 10 ethnic costumes for itty bitty male and female figures with the flags of countries ranging from Mexico to Peru to Finland. (Interestingly, not Japan or the U.S.) The figures are photographed in five steps each. Not clear enough? On pages 69-73 each figure has about 8 line drawings showing each stitch with the placement, the color of the beads and fiber.When Amazon took down customer-uploaded images from the top of the page and then stuck them down to the right of the reviews, I vowed I'd never upload another. But I just can't resist showing you what I'm talking about. Please click on them and see why I'm so enthusiastic.I own hundreds of needlework books, 800+ before I started paring down my library, and my husband will roll his eyes when he sees I got another. But this is truly historic to me.

Great little instructional and inspirational book! If you love embroidery and you love beads, this book offers the perfect combination of both. For the most part, the motifs are small and quick to stitch. They utilize simple embroidery stitches and beading techniques, and are perfect little additions to crazy quilt squares and other embellished embroidery works. The diagrams are very clear, and the organization of the book is well done, with a good index at the end where each technique is clearly explained. It's a fun book, with lots of colorful little samples to stitch!

Great book for the beginning bead person all you'll need is your imagination! Although I thought the book was JUST beadwork I was suprised to learn that it's embroidery stitches incorporating beads into the designs...it was a nice suprise. The photos and directions are clear and all I need now is for my mind to be creative and decide how I'll use these on my doll clothes collars etc. etc. 100% satisfied with this purchase and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another from this author.

This book has dozens, maybe hundreds of motifs... beautiful designs, flowers, "critters" and even sweet treats to do up in bead embroidery. There are even tiny flags and ethnic costumed bead doll embroideries. The step by step process to make each one is clearly outlined in charts and pictures and ideas given for their use on items of clothing and accessories.

The samples in this book use beads to accent small embroidery motifs that can be used as entire projects or as small embellishments alone. Written step-by-step detailed instructions with color photos guide you through each motif. This book would be excellent for anyone from the beginner to advanced embroiderer. I am very happy to add it to my reference library.

I like to do bead embroidery. This is a good book to get new ideas.

This book but is nicely done and the photos are good but I was looking for larger design motifs. There are a couple of largish motifs but the rest are teeny, tiny. If you want to embroider a lot of tiny people in their cultural clothing, this is the book for you.

When I saw this book had only 2 reviews I felt I had to speak up. I don't write reviews on books even though reading is practically my religion for the simple reason that I feel my voice doesn't really add to the conversation. When power house books like All the Light We Cannot See is getting 23, 752 reviews and counting I feel like a drop in the ocean. I'll just keep reading and keep my opinions to myself (or to close friends).What changed was that this unique book fell into my hands at the right time. In less than 3 months I'm leaving my home state with my husband, dog, and all our worldly possessions to cross mountains, desert, and snow (all of which this Houston, TX girl has never seen in her 28 years) on my husbands 30th birthday because we are chasing a dream of the grass is greener WAY on the other side. Vancouver, WA might turn out to be a huge disappointment but that craving for a fresh start has promoted us to hit the reset button and start life anew in another state.Melody Warnick, the author of this book, has done what I'm about to do 6 times in her life. According to Warnick on average a person will jump ship 11.7 times. These statics show that a lot of us have fallen into a habit of chasing the next best thing, hoping that in a new land they will finally feel that internal warmth and inner knowing of "home".For Warnick after move number six from Austin, Texas to Blacksburg, Virginia she was sure that she would finally be wooed by Blacksburg and be at peace. But Real Blacksburg as opposed to Fictional Blacksburg (the one Warnick had created in her head while obessessing scrolling through Google Street View at 1:00 am) was, as she said, bleak. She wasn't happy and the thought she will once again have to move didn't make her joyful. Her girls were getting to be school age and she wanted them to have something permanent. A real sense of home. And so, Warnick begins Love Where You Live Experiments in her new hometown. This time she was staying.How does a book about staying help someone like me who has decided to go? The answer is complicated. In reading this book I have learned the reason why I have felt so uneasy all these years in my home state isn't about the politics, the heat, or the bugs. Because the things she writes about are things I have done and still have felt no attachment to my place. Texas has been the home of my head but not my heart. And once I land in Washington with nothing more than my bed, dog, and husband what I'll be searching for to make me feel at home won't be the next Pottery Barn duvet cover. I will be walking the streets, eating local foods, saying hi to my neighbors, and spend my money at the local art supply store as opposed to the mammoth Hobby Lobby. Maybe I'll volunteer at the library and go to coffee houses rather than stay at home sobbing on my bathroom floor and lamenting that I ever moved in the first place.When I go I will be sure to take this book and the reminder that the warmth of home doesn't happen overnight. That just because I pack up and leave doesn't mean that I'm a newly made person. And that to truly love a place and stay where you are beings with the simple act of experiencing joy for as long as you are there.

This book has helped me understand why I hate living in the terrible Sacramento Valley and what to do about improving my outlook.Stuck here by circumstances and unable to move away by the same circumstance this book is a good guide how to help improve not only the town where I live but my attitude as well. Except of course when it's 115 in the shade.Editing review:After reading this book and implementing some of Melody's suggestions, my attitude has indeed improved. Both my wife ( who somehow enjoys this dreary place) and I set out to explore the small businesses, eateries, local stores, farm stands, farmers markets etc..In addition to my volunteer work at a local museum, we take cooking lessons at our local Olive store. My wife continues to enjoy art classes at our lodge.We are busy. It's still a major challenge to put up with the heat in the summer. No inexpensive cure for that.

My husband and I bought a house about a year and a half ago, and I suffered from buyers remorse a little bit until I read this book. I implemented a few of her tips (like becoming a regular at a restaurant, walking even if there are no sidewalks, hosting neighborhood dinners) and have since begun to fall in love with where I live (which just auto corrected to where I live which is so appropriate!). Anyway, if you struggle to feel at home where you dwell, definitely take a gander. It’s eye opening.

Warnick expresses well many of the thoughts and feelings I have experienced each time I've moved to a new locale. The wishful hopes of a new beginning. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the experiences and discoveries that Warnick had during her journey from place to place, and learned a lot from her sociological research.

The blend of memoir and research exploring how to feel at home where you live gave me so much to think about. I really appreciated Warnick’s exploration of what helps us feel at home in a place and what we can do to cultivate that feeling, as well as how our personality can impact it. Some of it seemed common sense but I think we could all do with a refresher course on how to better embrace your community—even if you’re like me and know you’re not where you’re supposed to be. Warnick is writing from a fairly privileged perspective so your mileage may vary in terms of takeaways. But I’m really glad I read it, especially as I consider where my next home will be.

This book has inspired me to make some changes in my life to help me love the place I live. Melody Warnick has taken her time to include research that is intriguing and accurate. The writing is clever and enjoyable. I do not typically read a lot of nonfiction, but this book is easy to read and pulled me in.

Living in Blacksburg, VA, I found Ms. Warnick's mention of local enterprises interesting enough for me to follow up on. I also enjoyed her thoughts on walking. At present I do not drive a car and basically use a combination of walking and riding Blacksburg Transit. Walking is the best, of course.

Get a jump on Women's History Month with this new picture book about Clara Lemlich, a remarkable 20th century labor leader. Picture books about early 20th century Jewish women labor leaders are not exactly published every day in the picture book universe, so I was especially eager to read this new work, illustrated by award-winning illustrator Melissa Sweet, about Clara Lemlich, best known for organizing the shirtwaist makers' strike of 1909.We first meet Clara as she is arriving in the United States, part of the mass of immigrants. But Clara is different--she's "got grit, and she's going to prove it. Look out, New York!"Social justice is an overriding theme of this book, and we see through Clara's eyes the injustices of life in early 20th century America for the impoverished immigrants. "This was not the America she'd imagined." Girls are hired to make blouses for a few dollars a month, wages desperately needed to help support their families. Markel vividly describes the factories in just a few words--only two toilets, one sink, and three towels for 300 girls to share, and better not be a few minutes late or bleed on a piece of cloth if you've pricked your finger or you'll lose half a day's pay or even be fired.But little Clara Lemlich is not one to sit back and take it. She organizes strikes, and despite being arrested repeatedly, and beaten, she is not easily silenced. But she realizes that a general strike of all the garment workers is what's needed to make the bosses stand up and take notice, and at a union meeting, she calls for women to launch the largest walk-out ever.Clara is the leader of the Revolt of the Girls, as the newspapers call it. And eventually the owners meet some of their demands, including a shortened work week and better wages. Markel ends her elegie to Lemlich on a hopeful note, emphasizing how Clara's actions helped thousands of workers. "proving that in America, wrongs can be righted, warriors can wear skirts and blouses, and the bravest hearts may beat in girls only five feet tall."An afterword provides further details about the history of the garment industry, and the role of Jewish immigrants in the business. Strangely enough, Clara is never identified as Jewish in the main text of the book, although she is shown shouting in Yiddish for a general strike. Back matter also includes a selected bibliography of general and primary sources. I would have also liked to have seen something on Clara Lemlich's later life. For example, she continued advocating for the oppressed her entire life, even helping to organize nursing home orderlies in the retirement home where she spent the end of her life.Melissa Sweet's remarkable illustrations integrate the garment industry in a very literal fashion into her depiction of Clara's life. She uses watercolor, gouache, and mixed media, and pieces of fabric and sewing machine stitching are front and center in nearly every illustration. Some of the illustrations are particularly moving, including the one in which rows and rows of factory workers are shown from directly above, with the hundreds of girls appearing faceless and indistinct from each other like cogs in a wheel. I also loved the "girl power" illustration of Clara calling for a general strike--Sweet depicts Clara from behind, with hundreds of people in the audience raising their fists in solidarity and with her call for a strike in an oversized text balloon, with the word "Strayk!" (or strike!) in bright red lettering!This is a must-have for anyone interested in exposing their children to important issues and people in the social justice movement, as well as outstanding women in history, those who chose to try to make a difference in an era when women were encouraged to make their dominion at home.

In my Kindergarten class, we are doing a unit on "Change Makers" which got started with Martin Luther King Jr. I wanted to include other change makers that helped inspire change through non-violent action. I am so excited to be including her in my unit. Nicely illustrated, and simple enough for my 5 and 6 year old students.

Beautiful book, great mixed media illustrations paired with clear writing. It's a bit wordy for a picture book, but works great as a read aloud (which is why I bought it.)

Fun book. My kids really enjoyed it. My daughter is an activist herself and she took it to her room to read and "get ideas."

I love this book. It is a part of the history of our nation and shows what immigrants had to endure in order to survive. The illustrations are wonderful. I loved this type of book as a child and think that todays children would really enjoy it.
