Why did I write this book, anyway? Probably because I have personally recycled all of my family's humanure since 1979 using very simple methods. The resulting compost has always been used in our food garden. We have never produced any sewage from our home. Instead, all of our organic residues are carefully recycled by composting and are then returned to the soil, humanure included, thereby maintaining the fertility of our food gardens and eliminating organic waste altogether.

I never thought I'd be sold on the idea. I'm embarassed to admit I've been making fun of my humanure-composting sister over the last two years, because I thought the idea was too "out there". However about 10 pages into this book, I was sold. Not only for the sustainability and the kindness-to-the-Earth factor, but I finally will be able to make enough compost to use in my garden!!!! To all of you gardeners out there lamenting where you'll get your next manure fix for the spring, look no further! You and your family are all you need to make huge amounts of awesome compost, along with carbon & time, ofcourse! All of the other composting books I ever read never made sense to me with their dire warnings and restrictions - you can't compost this, it's not safe to do that. I mean does the Earth say - sorry, no dairy or dog poop allowed - take that nasty stuff to the landfill? There is no such thing as 'waste' in a whole ecosystem. Heck, I was even able to convince my husband to poop in a bucket, which is a miracle in and of itself.The other great part about humanure composting is that it makes so much spiritual sense. In order for us to be sustained by the Earth, we have to close the circle, and give her back the bio-resources that we generate, not pretend that we don't produce any manure just like all animals, and bury it/burn it/send it off to a landfill, thereby breaking the chain of life. This concept is the key to sustaining EVERY person on this Earth, at 7 billion and counting. If all of our manure is giving back to the soil in a safe and sustainable way, there is no reason why we cannot build back our lost soils and forests and feed everyone, not one person excluded. If Asia can feed millions on the same land for 1000s of years on unsafe 'night soil', the United States can completely restore its once fertile landscape by utilizing us humans as the manure machines we are!

Is it too much to say "one of the greatest gardening books of all time"? I still reference this great piece of work, regularly, and one of my good friends took it to a new level as a source of inspiration for his own book called _All My Secrets of Organic Gardening_.Mr. Jenkins is admirably expert in this subject: the history, the chemistry, how to do it, how to understand it and not be a fecophobe, how to use this knowledge. Mr. Jenkins' rarefied humor shines through for every "nugget" that the critics can "dig up."Highly, highly recommended for every household.

Human effluent has been the nemesis of most societies for centuries and despite all of our current technological prowess, we have yet to intelligently address one of the most basic biological functions of our existence. And our effluent is backing-up on us, big time.After "defecating in our drinking water" via the conventional toilet, as author Joseph Jenkins succinctly points out, it then gets transported with little or inadequate processing right into our ground water, waterways and/or oceans where it reeks havoc on the environment and contaminates future drinking water. And this is an earmark of a "civilized" society???The Humanure Handbook provides a wealth of thoroughly researched, hands-on experience and scientific data that demonstrates that after a natural process called "thermophilic" bacterial digestion, which occurs in a compost bin and where all pathogens are killed, excreta is then converted to a valuable nutrient for agriculture and thereby completing a full-circle life cycle. Most importantly, effluent can then be kept out of our drinking water and not treated or referred to as an undesirable "waste product".The information is conveyed in a humorous, folksy, down-to-earth easy to understand style along with drawings, charts, tables, photos and a wealth of resource info for further research. Jenkins' website has a forum for sharing more info, experiences and to answer any and all questions in the process of humanuring and constructed wetland gray water treatment.The info in this book should be required study for every human on the planet- it is so basic and fundamental, yet so vitally important for the health of our precious planet and the myriad life forms it supports. Joseph Jenkins has put together a monumental guide to help cleanup Earth, re-invigorate common sense and I should think he is worthy of a Nobel Prize for his efforts! As it stands, Jenkins' book has won many other accolades and awards and I shall add my heartfelt THANKS! to him, his family, and their collaborators!

This book improved our lives as soon as I finished it! Thank you Joe Jenkins! After living for four years with a well known brand of composting toilet, the sawdust toilet in this book has finally given us simple living. I read this book cover to cover the day I got it. My husband built it in one hour and we started using it. Simplicity at it's best! Everything in this book makes total sense. I only wish I'd bought this book four years ago when we first moved to our homestead. I highly recommend it-it should be required reading to live in this country!

Wolf accurately explains the history and main ideas of the major school of thoughts in as uncontroversial a manner as he possibly could. 5/5!

It's good to leave the scary propaganda behind and see the three primary economic theories discuss side by side. All have flaws; all have good points; and all are theories. It's not a science.

Great book but not compatible with the latest editions of Kindle!

Of the many Kindle books I have read, this is the first that was missing the "Aa" font icon so that I was unable to change the font size. Additionally, it provides only a one page orientation. Amazon support was helpful in zeroing in on the issue. The webpage does indicate that this is a replica of the print book, which is something I did not notice and would not have understood the impact of it anyway.After experimenting with the pages in this book, I discovered that if I used it in landscape orientation, and double-tapped the screen, it would fill the screen with print which was larger than what was originally shown. The font could then be enlarged more by doing a reverse-pinch maneuver with my fingers, but that put much of the page outside of the viewing area. Although these are viable workarounds to no having the "Aa" icon, they are cumbersome. This was something that the Amazon support staff person I spoke to did not appear to be aware of.The authors have provided an interesting and logical examination of the subject matter. Although it is obviously a text book, it does a good job of presenting a complex set of economic theories, their histories, how they interrelate, and their consequences for society. It is also good in that it does not seem to assume a knowledge base that a reader may not have beyond basic economic theory. This is a book that will not provide the reader so much with the basics of the theories, but rather, it is an exploration of their genesis and how they interact with each other, especially as to how each adjusts for events that challenge their respective views.This book opens a lot of doors, not only as to the various theories, but also as to how a person's particular way of viewing the world might influence which theory supports that world view, thus demonstrating another case of having a viewpoint and finding a theory to support it as opposed to finding a theory first and developing a viewpoint therefrom. There is also an emphasis on the sometimes shared lexicon of these competing theories with significantly different meanings assigned. What a Marxist means by class is not the same thing that a Keynesian means, so comparing apples to apples becomes yet a little more challenging for the unenlightened.

Wolff and Resnick are well known and widely acclaimed for their 1987 book "Economics: Marxian versus Neoclassical" Economics: Marxian versus Neoclassical published by John Hopkins University Press. The current book under review, "Contending Economic Theories: Neoclassical, Keynesian, and Marxian" published by MIT Press, is an extension of their previous book. The importance of "Economics: Marxian versus Neoclassical" was that it offered an impressive introduction and intermediate level presentation to both neoclassical microeconomics and Marxian economics. To this day chapter 3 of "Economics: Marxian and Neoclassical" and chapter 4 of "Contending Economic Theories: Neoclassical, Keynesian, and Marxian" are among the best introductory/intermediate presentations of Marxian economics. (Other competitors include Ernest Mandel's two volume book, "Marx's Economic Theory" Marx Economic Theory, Paul Sweezy's The Theory of Capitalist Development The Theory of Capitalist Development: Principles of Marxian Political Economy, John Weeks' "Capital and Exploitation" Capital, Exploitation and Economic Crisis (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy), Meghnad Desai's "Marxian Economics" Marxian Economics (Littlefield, Adams quality paperback), and David Harvey's "A Companion to Marx's Capital" A Companion to Marx's Capital; all of these books are far lengthier than Wolff and Resnick, while the latter loses no depth or rigor to their far briefer introduction).This book is worth its purchase for chapter 4 alone, but if you already own their 1987 book, you already have this chapter in that book.The primary weakness of the 1987 book is that the presentation of Keynesian economics was not presented at the same level of depth and rigor as was neoclassical microeconomics and Marxian economics. Unfortunately, "Contending Economic Theories" does not mend the weakness. Instead, Wolff and Resnick have merely separated the sections already available in Economics: Marxian versus Neoclassical" and given these sections their own chapter heading. There is a brief and new elaboration on "Post-Keynesianism" but this section is rather obtuse and shallow. Thus, although it appears there are three new chapters, really there are two.The two new chapters do hit their marks. Wolff and Resnick add a chapter (chapter 5) on "late neoclassical economics" co-authored with Yahya M. Madra. The chapter introduces and discusses various developments in neoclassical microeconomics including recent developments in externalities, imperfect competition (i.e. big business), transaction costs, asymmetric information, bounded rationality, behavioral economics, game theory, and evolutionary game theory. This chapter is brief, but has significant depth and breadth of recent developments in neoclassical microeconomics.Wolff and Resnick also add a chapter on oscillations, instability, and intervention pitched in the context of three competing economic theories (neoclassical, Keynesian, Marxian). This chapter is interesting and very useful. It clearly demonstrates the symbiotic relationship between real economic oscillations and economic theory. Wolff and Resnick do not see these developments within neoclassical economics as any serious challenge to the orthodoxy and do not believe these developments as connecting with Marxian themes of class, exploitation, and instability. They base most of this on the philosophical foundations and entry point of neoclassical economics. I believe this to be an important point, but it is not clear whether the philosophical foundations/entry point of neoclassical economics are consistent with some of the results of behavioral economics, (evolutionary) game theory, imperfect competition, and asymmetric information. I am more optimistic that neoclassical economists working within these "late" developments may be in a position of sympathy to understanding, traditionally, more Marxian themes of class, exploitation, and instability.

As with Michio Kaku’s book “Physics of the Impossible”, answering the question involves defining the various meanings of “impossible.”One way to parse the question is, “Is Iron Man possible today given the existing state of technology?” In and of itself, this question is of limited interest because the answer is, “no.” There’s certainly a demand, and so if Iron Man could exist given current technology, he probably would. That’s not to say it isn’t interesting to learn about what technologies are holding us back and where the cutting edge of relevant technologies lies—both of which are addressed by the book.Still, a more interesting inquiry is, “Will Iron Man ever be reality given the physical laws that we know to govern the universe?” While more intriguing, it’s also a harder question to definitively answer. It’s impossible to foresee all the technological developments that might come along to answer the seemingly insurmountable challenges (e.g. Tony Stark’s inevitable Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).) The book deals with the critical question of what challenges would have to be overcome for Iron Man to be reality.As Zehr suggests, the appeal of Iron Man is that he’s considered to be among superheroes for the common man. Like Batman, the sufficiently bright and diligent nerd may fantasize that, “That could be me.” You or I can’t be Superman or Wolverine, but given enough money, smarts, and training we could be Batman, or—even better—pilot the Iron Man suit. Put in this light, the book may seem like just another frivolous attempt to capitalize on the popularity of superheroes to sell books. However, there’s actually a great deal of food for thought packed in the book. Like others, I read the book because its title is “Inventing Iron Man” and not “Neuro-motor control of a self-propelled armor system” or some other suitably scholarly title.Dr. Zehr has the bona fides to delve into this topic. He is a Professor who investigates questions of how the nervous system controls movement. That subject may not constitute the sum total of critical concerns, but it’s one of the most important challenges. For Iron Man to move the way he does in the movies and comic books, Tony Stark’s impulses to move have to be transmitted seamlessly to the servo-motors that move the suit. From dodging Col. Rhodes’ (i.e. War Machine’s) punches to ducking RPGs, Stark can’t be quick enough if he has to manually steer the device. Then, of course, there’s the issue of feedback. Any neophyte meditator who’s had his or her foot fall sound asleep will know how difficult it is to walk surefootedly when one can’t feel anything through one’s foot.[“Iron Man 3” movie spoiler commentary in this paragraph.] One of the most damning challenges for making Iron Man a reality is the high probability of severe concussions. Let’s say you make the suit out of a material that is virtually indestructible? This may be possible. However, the pilot’s mushy brain is still sloshing around inside that impenetrable armor. One can remotely pilot the suit in order to negate this (as has been done in the comic books and the third movie), but—at that point—is it still Iron Man? I know from a writer’s perspective it’s a lot harder to maintain tension if there’s nothing human on the line. In the third movie about 30 autonomously piloted suits get wiped out and the viewer doesn’t care—the only source of tension is that Tony Stark is without armor half the time.Some of the most interesting discussions are about where the current state of the art lies with respect to: a.) direct mind control over mechanical systems; b.) a “flying suit”; and c.) robotic movement enhancers. Zehr conducts interviews with those engineers and technologists involved in such technologies, and finds out where we are presently. Letter “a” above seems to be the least developed of the three technologies, but they are all active lines of research.I enjoyed this book and found it interesting. I think anyone who is interested in the state of technology and its limits will find it a nice pop-sci introduction to the subject. The use of superheroes as a pedagogic device may be overdone, but it continues to work because we are fascinated by the edge of possibility, and that’s what superheroes represent.

Inventing Iron man: a good book for those interested in the possibility of 'powered exoskeletons' and related devices. not so good in actually presenting a possibility of specifically Iron Man or the technical side of things. Much is explained about the feasibility, or lack thereof, for these suits, and putting humans inside them.No detail, for example, is given of recent advances in nanotechnology, materials, power generating/energy harvesting devices, actuators, etc, which could make an "Iron Man" suit actually practical within our lifetime. There's a good reason the U.S. military is funding projects like this. As an electrical Engineer who enjoys seeing the technical descriptions and attempts to reverse-engineer devices, this exploration was intriguing, but lacked further exploration. The Iron man suit, is after all, the pinnacle of a futuristic technology. Explaining it away as unfeasable using current technology is only unfair.That is all.

Prior to that, at age 15 his penchant for brilliance took him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he would earn two college degrees: one in physics and the other in engineering. In their debut cookbook, the IACP and James Beard Award-winning Flatbreads & Flavors (1995), Alford and Duguid explored a wide range of ethnic cuisines using the traditional flatbreads of each as a springboard. I read this book and it is a very information, fun and educational read. I am always on the lookout for a new kind of rice to try and the colors are an added bonus. I especially love the rice dictionary which list more varieties of rice than I believed existed still, I realized that it is not conclusive as I have a few varieties not even listed like the Madagascar pink rice and Bamboo rice, among others...who knew rice was so complex? I also love the many fun recipes list that are made from or to accompany rice. My only complaint is that there are no pictures of the recipes (every cookbook should include pictures of the recipes) and I don't care much for the black and white pictures used in most of the text as it does not clearly display the various colors of rice(s) as well as it could have. Still, it is a very useful and fun book for any rice lover who is interested in learning more about it.

If you are interested in and love to eat rice, you should seriously consider this book. The authors have written several cook books--almost travelogues--about the food found in the Far East. I've not confirmed it, but I think this was their first. I somehow missed seeing this when it was new, and I now consider it an oversight on my part. While it is an older book, it still has a lot of pertinent information in it.It focuses mainly on the countries in the Far East, but there are chapters on rice in the U.S. and Europe. It does a lousy job of covering rice in the U.S. and Europe and that is why I knocked my rating down a star. On the other hand, the recipes in the other chapters are very nice and you will easily find some "keepers".You may need to visit an Asian market to find some of the ingredients, but, hey, if you really like to eat rice, you really need to get acquainted with an Asian market in your area. Asian greens and aisles of condiments will turn you into a rice fanatic, and you'll soon be growing Asian greens in your garden.I highly recommend this book. It is less a travelogue than their other books and the authors incorporate their family life and practices into the narrative, which makes it very personable besides informative. Check out the availability of used copies--you can't go wrong with this book.

Thank heavens there are cookbook authors like Duguid and Alford out there who know how to present a topic like rice in the most enticing way possible. Growing up in a mixed Chinese background, I'm very familiar with the traditional Chinese methods of cooking rice. This book, however, travels the world of rice, taking you not only to China, but to Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, India, Africa and more. The stories of how rice is grown and prepared in other parts of the world is fascinating and the photos, as always, are beautiful. A lot of the photos brought back beautiful memories of the rice paddies I saw in Bali and the beautiful people of Bali. With this book, I was able to see other parts of the world, as it relates to rice. There are a wide variety of recipes in the book, right from how to cook the basic rice (and how it's done in each country represented) to recipes for dishes that are best accompanied by rice. The recipes start with traditional background, but have been modified for modern ingredients and tastes in some cases. I found as I turned the pages, each recipe would have me saying "i have to try that!" in particular a simple dish that I had grown up with but had completely forgotten about.I started my Alford and Duguid collection with Beyond the Great Wall, which was probably even more amazing. I will be getting other books from these authors which cross the boundaries between culinary delights and world travel.

I'm fairly new to cooking rice other than Uncle Ben's in a pot on the stove. Recently I invested in a quality rice cooker, and decided to get a bit more serious. This book has been a tremendous help to me the novice, not only did I learn the basics of cooking rice well, but I also learned that I didn't know much about rice at all. I never realized that there were so many different kinds of rice, or basic things like the difference between long-grain, medium-grain, and short-grain, or how to recognize high-quality rice, or the idea of washing rice. Then there was information on how to find different kinds of rice (I discovered that locally here in Raleigh I can find dozens of kinds easily, cheaply, and wow, Uncle Ben's now has a lot of new cousins on my shelf!).Then the recipes in this book are plentiful, and the pictures are great. The authors did a fantastic job, and if you like rice, or would like to learn to love rice and all of its varieties, GET THIS BOOK! It's really opened up a new 'rice' world for us! ;-)

However, I wouldn't recommend that it reside on the coffee table. While beautiful to look at, there is too much information and to many wonderful recipes not to have a prominent place in your kitchen. I discovered this book at my local library, but promptly bought a copy for my personal cookbook library. I had not realized there are so many different types of rice and now I visit my local natural food store to obtain many different varieties. The recipes are easy and tasty. Reading about how this staple is used in almost every culture in the world is fascinating. It is definitely a book that provides a feast for the eyes and the tastebuds.

I love this cookbook. It is so informative — as much a travel book as a cookbook. The photographs, the design and the production quality are excellent.

I use this book all the time so I gave it to my son. I have several of the books by this couple and they are all wonderful.

Michael F. Armstrong is a partner at the law firm Lankler and Carragher in New York. He was the chief counsel to the Knapp Commission and an assistant United States attorney in theSouthern District of New York (chief, Securities Fraud Unit), as well as district attorney for Queens County, New York. Currently chair of the New York City Commission to Combat Police Corruption, he served as advisor to New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo regarding allegations of political influence in the state police and continues to work on high-profile cases, which have involved such people as financier Louis Wolfson, boxing promoter Don King, accused would-be wife killer Claus von Bülow, and Queens County Borough President Donald Manes.

Armstrong has written a concise and fair account of the Knapp Commission's investigation of corruption in the New York Police Department. The book is a little slow in the beginning as he focuses on procedural matters related to getting the Commission up and running. This is part of the story, no doubt, but not really the reason why the Knapp Commission is interesting. Things pick up considerably with the introduction of Bill Phillips, the witness who became the center of the hearings. Phillips is an interesting character and Armstrong clearly has some affection for him, despite his involvement in serious corruption and graft. The descriptions of meetings between the top power players (e.g., the Police Commissioner, Governor Rockefeller) after the Commission's hearings are report are fascinating for their portrayal of the way men with real power interacted in those days.The book could use a little editing. There are some odd factual errors. Early on Armstrong explains his dislike for Mayor Lindsay by stating that Lindsay had run on undoing the mistakes of his predecessor, Mayor Abe Beame. This makes no sense as Beame was Mayor after Lindsay, not before. In a description of a robbery in the Meatpacking District, Armstrong states that a patrol car was parked on Barrow Street, near 13th Street and Tenth Avenue. This is geographically impossible as Barrow Street is much further south than the corner of 13th and 10th. These may seem like small potatoes, but I must admit that they made we wonder how accurate Armstrong's memories are. On the stylistic front, Armstrong quotes at length from transcripts of conversations recorded on hidden microphones early in the book, only to repeat the same information later in the section on the hearing itself.It's a worthwhile read, but it could have been a little tighter.

Was a member of NYPD during Knapp from its genesis until it's end. In many ways, this book re-enforces the "tempest in a teapot" findings but as the author notes, the Commission was accused of not being an agent for change. That is patently false. It changed the entire culture of NYPD. That having been said, Mr. Armstrong (whom I respect) provides us here with anecdotal evidence of the lack of resolve of the Lindsay Administration, failures in funding, parochial conflicts woth prosecutorial entities and the perfidy of "witnesses". It is informative but the reader comes away with less than a significant impression of the gravity of their findings. Didn't deal with a number of relevant issues though: Commission staff that ran afoul of the law themselves and their star witness, a thoroughly corrupt individual, successful prosecution for a cold blooded multiple homicide, based in corrupt activity. Another principal "winess" became the model for perjurious statements, effectively blunting significant prosecutions.

This book tells the story of the Knapp Commission that you never learned when you first learned about NYPD Corruption. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking to learn about the story of the largest police corruption in law enforcement history. The author Michael Armstrong does a great job of describing the hardships the Knapp Commission faced and how they were able to overcome those hurdles in the hopes of providing insight to Frank Serpico's allegations about corruption inside the NYPD. Great read pick up a copy if you want to learn more.

I was there in college when all this went down and Serpico was telling his story. NYPD took a beating from all the bad press. Considering that there were over 25,000 cops, the majority of which were honest, it was a tough time for the good ones.
