I wouldn't consider this book as a gold mine to say the least.I really didn't like the author's method of explaining the basics of brush drumming, and it felt like you needed a video to really get what he's trying to teach you.I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who's starting with brushes.Get Ed thigpen's sound of Brushes book instead.

I have really enjoyed this book. I have gained so much information I don't know where to begin. I have never been particularly skilled in the art of the brushes. However, after reading "Mastering the Arts of Brushes" and completing most of the 32 bursh patterns, my skills have really begun to develop. Additionally, I have seen my dexterity and coordination improve. The 10 essential concepts are key to understanding the way bushes are meant and can be used. I can now confidently incorporate brush strokes in my music.

I've fully enjoyed this book. It makes for a fun read and is packed full of extremely useful info and advice.Marilyn spins tales of herself, and later a few friends, trying to find and learn to use their wheels.In the end, theres a few laughs, a very small car, an all knowing monk and very patient husband. xDI would recommend this book to any spinner. For one its extremely useful. And for another its a time capsule of what the world of spinning and folk art was like in the 1970s and of the knowledge she is seeking of her grandmothers time.So much knowledge has been lost of our craft, but I found gems I never knew in these pages.

a very enjoyable read...like talking with an old friend about the joys of fiber. Even if you do not spin but you like to hear how people got into what they enjoy without being preachy, this is the read for you...especially if you enjoy all things handy-craft. I am just learning to spin and I find it both enjoyable and informative.

Being a spinner, I am still new to a lot of the terminology that spinners use. This book is a great tutorial in the spinning process and a good read besides. Very informative and helpful. It takes you from sheep to yarn and beyond. It is a hard book to find so grab it while you can!

This was the only spinning book in our local library and I found it very helpful. I wanted it for my reference bookshelf so I ordered the 'newer' addition from Amazon. I am very pleased with it.

First, I loved the book's message about adopting a healthy lifestyle and the illustrations were beautiful. However, there are some contextual issues that I have. I support those that choose to be vegan, but the tone in places, if I were a kid that ate meat, I would feel like a bad person, like I was being shamed for eating it after reading this. The cow holding the "Animal Lives Matter" sign reminded me of people that say "All Lives Matter" and just felt unnecessarily snarky. Maybe I am just reading too much into it. Overall, the intentions of the message are good, there are positive and sweet moments of being a vegan discussed, I just wish the sweetness carried throughout the book.

I'm not a vegan, yet; but I have grandkids who are and I do admit it is tough making sure we have the right foods for them to eat while at the same time explaining that we aren't doing something terrible because we like to eat turkey on Thanksgiving. This book was very colorful, charmingly written, and helps us support them in being all that they can be; healthy, brave, caring, and smart!

I am not vegan, but as a mother I recognize the importance of making decisions for the health of your family regardless of mainstream opinions. This author has done that and so much more. Her encouragement of children to be proud of the incredibly brave environmental stewards they are is to be commended. This book helps raise awareness of food options outside of the more common consumption of animal products. The rhyming words and bright illustrations keep your attention, while also supporting a vegan and environmentally conscious lifestyle. We could all take notes from this book regardless of our eating style. I’m inspired to be more conscious of how my daily actions affect the environment which I love.

My 5 and 2 year old vegans are going to love this! I struggle to find veg-themed books that aren’t too sad or scary. Here, the animals are happy & cheering on the kids! Perfect!
