When I saw this book had only 2 reviews I felt I had to speak up. I don't write reviews on books even though reading is practically my religion for the simple reason that I feel my voice doesn't really add to the conversation. When power house books like All the Light We Cannot See is getting 23, 752 reviews and counting I feel like a drop in the ocean. I'll just keep reading and keep my opinions to myself (or to close friends).What changed was that this unique book fell into my hands at the right time. In less than 3 months I'm leaving my home state with my husband, dog, and all our worldly possessions to cross mountains, desert, and snow (all of which this Houston, TX girl has never seen in her 28 years) on my husbands 30th birthday because we are chasing a dream of the grass is greener WAY on the other side. Vancouver, WA might turn out to be a huge disappointment but that craving for a fresh start has promoted us to hit the reset button and start life anew in another state.Melody Warnick, the author of this book, has done what I'm about to do 6 times in her life. According to Warnick on average a person will jump ship 11.7 times. These statics show that a lot of us have fallen into a habit of chasing the next best thing, hoping that in a new land they will finally feel that internal warmth and inner knowing of "home".For Warnick after move number six from Austin, Texas to Blacksburg, Virginia she was sure that she would finally be wooed by Blacksburg and be at peace. But Real Blacksburg as opposed to Fictional Blacksburg (the one Warnick had created in her head while obessessing scrolling through Google Street View at 1:00 am) was, as she said, bleak. She wasn't happy and the thought she will once again have to move didn't make her joyful. Her girls were getting to be school age and she wanted them to have something permanent. A real sense of home. And so, Warnick begins Love Where You Live Experiments in her new hometown. This time she was staying.How does a book about staying help someone like me who has decided to go? The answer is complicated. In reading this book I have learned the reason why I have felt so uneasy all these years in my home state isn't about the politics, the heat, or the bugs. Because the things she writes about are things I have done and still have felt no attachment to my place. Texas has been the home of my head but not my heart. And once I land in Washington with nothing more than my bed, dog, and husband what I'll be searching for to make me feel at home won't be the next Pottery Barn duvet cover. I will be walking the streets, eating local foods, saying hi to my neighbors, and spend my money at the local art supply store as opposed to the mammoth Hobby Lobby. Maybe I'll volunteer at the library and go to coffee houses rather than stay at home sobbing on my bathroom floor and lamenting that I ever moved in the first place.When I go I will be sure to take this book and the reminder that the warmth of home doesn't happen overnight. That just because I pack up and leave doesn't mean that I'm a newly made person. And that to truly love a place and stay where you are beings with the simple act of experiencing joy for as long as you are there.

This book has helped me understand why I hate living in the terrible Sacramento Valley and what to do about improving my outlook.Stuck here by circumstances and unable to move away by the same circumstance this book is a good guide how to help improve not only the town where I live but my attitude as well. Except of course when it's 115 in the shade.Editing review:After reading this book and implementing some of Melody's suggestions, my attitude has indeed improved. Both my wife ( who somehow enjoys this dreary place) and I set out to explore the small businesses, eateries, local stores, farm stands, farmers markets etc..In addition to my volunteer work at a local museum, we take cooking lessons at our local Olive store. My wife continues to enjoy art classes at our lodge.We are busy. It's still a major challenge to put up with the heat in the summer. No inexpensive cure for that.

I don’t normally write book reviews, but Melody Warnick’s This Is Where You Belong has forever changed my life. My husband and I bought a house about a year and a half ago, and I suffered from buyers remorse a little bit until I read this book. I implemented a few of her tips (like becoming a regular at a restaurant, walking even if there are no sidewalks, hosting neighborhood dinners) and have since begun to fall in love with where I live (which just auto corrected to where I live which is so appropriate!). Anyway, if you struggle to feel at home where you dwell, definitely take a gander. It’s eye opening.

Warnick expresses well many of the thoughts and feelings I have experienced each time I've moved to a new locale. The wishful hopes of a new beginning. Learning what is not so great about the new place. What has to happen if you are ever going to be satisfied with where you are. The futility of trying to decide ahead of time how things will be at a new address. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the experiences and discoveries that Warnick had during her journey from place to place, and learned a lot from her sociological research.

The blend of memoir and research exploring how to feel at home where you live gave me so much to think about. I really appreciated Warnick’s exploration of what helps us feel at home in a place and what we can do to cultivate that feeling, as well as how our personality can impact it. Some of it seemed common sense but I think we could all do with a refresher course on how to better embrace your community—even if you’re like me and know you’re not where you’re supposed to be. Warnick is writing from a fairly privileged perspective so your mileage may vary in terms of takeaways. But I’m really glad I read it, especially as I consider where my next home will be.

This book has inspired me to make some changes in my life to help me love the place I live. Melody Warnick has taken her time to include research that is intriguing and accurate. The writing is clever and enjoyable. I do not typically read a lot of nonfiction, but this book is easy to read and pulled me in.

Living in Blacksburg, VA, I found Ms. Warnick's mention of local enterprises interesting enough for me to follow up on. I also enjoyed her thoughts on walking. At present I do not drive a car and basically use a combination of walking and riding Blacksburg Transit. Walking is the best, of course.

Picture books about early 20th century Jewish women labor leaders are not exactly published every day in the picture book universe, so I was especially eager to read this new work, illustrated by award-winning illustrator Melissa Sweet, about Clara Lemlich, best known for organizing the shirtwaist makers' strike of 1909.We first meet Clara as she is arriving in the United States, part of the mass of immigrants. But Clara is different--she's "got grit, and she's going to prove it. Look out, New York!"Social justice is an overriding theme of this book, and we see through Clara's eyes the injustices of life in early 20th century America for the impoverished immigrants. "This was not the America she'd imagined." Girls are hired to make blouses for a few dollars a month, wages desperately needed to help support their families. Markel vividly describes the factories in just a few words--only two toilets, one sink, and three towels for 300 girls to share, and better not be a few minutes late or bleed on a piece of cloth if you've pricked your finger or you'll lose half a day's pay or even be fired.But little Clara Lemlich is not one to sit back and take it. She organizes strikes, and despite being arrested repeatedly, and beaten, she is not easily silenced. But she realizes that a general strike of all the garment workers is what's needed to make the bosses stand up and take notice, and at a union meeting, she calls for women to launch the largest walk-out ever.Clara is the leader of the Revolt of the Girls, as the newspapers call it. And eventually the owners meet some of their demands, including a shortened work week and better wages. Markel ends her elegie to Lemlich on a hopeful note, emphasizing how Clara's actions helped thousands of workers. "proving that in America, wrongs can be righted, warriors can wear skirts and blouses, and the bravest hearts may beat in girls only five feet tall."An afterword provides further details about the history of the garment industry, and the role of Jewish immigrants in the business. Strangely enough, Clara is never identified as Jewish in the main text of the book, although she is shown shouting in Yiddish for a general strike. Back matter also includes a selected bibliography of general and primary sources. I would have also liked to have seen something on Clara Lemlich's later life. For example, she continued advocating for the oppressed her entire life, even helping to organize nursing home orderlies in the retirement home where she spent the end of her life.Melissa Sweet's remarkable illustrations integrate the garment industry in a very literal fashion into her depiction of Clara's life. She uses watercolor, gouache, and mixed media, and pieces of fabric and sewing machine stitching are front and center in nearly every illustration. Some of the illustrations are particularly moving, including the one in which rows and rows of factory workers are shown from directly above, with the hundreds of girls appearing faceless and indistinct from each other like cogs in a wheel. I also loved the "girl power" illustration of Clara calling for a general strike--Sweet depicts Clara from behind, with hundreds of people in the audience raising their fists in solidarity and with her call for a strike in an oversized text balloon, with the word "Strayk!" (or strike!) in bright red lettering!This is a must-have for anyone interested in exposing their children to important issues and people in the social justice movement, as well as outstanding women in history, those who chose to try to make a difference in an era when women were encouraged to make their dominion at home.

In my Kindergarten class, we are doing a unit on "Change Makers" which got started with Martin Luther King Jr. I wanted to include other change makers that helped inspire change through non-violent action. I am so excited to be including her in my unit. Nicely illustrated, and simple enough for my 5 and 6 year old students.

Beautiful book, great mixed media illustrations paired with clear writing. It's a bit wordy for a picture book, but works great as a read aloud (which is why I bought it.)

I've been trading algorithmically for eight years. This is one of the best books that I've seen for a beginning algorithmic trader. I wish it had been available when I was starting out! Instead, I had to learn from the school of hard knocks. (I made plenty of mistakes at first.)This book is rather sort. However, it offers excellent "getting started" introduction of why algorithmic trading can work (if done correctly) and discusses the software packages that you'll need to get started. It doesn't get into the details of specific trading algorithms (a more-advanced topic), but it will help get you started.After you've read this book, you can turn to other books, like those from Larry Connors or Keith Fitschen, for ideas about specific trading strategies that provably work. Yes, the author does provide some examples. But they are good if you happen to have TradeStation. He should have made less exaggerated claims and should have noted in bold - examples are only applicable to TradeStation. I thought even $2.99 for a worthless overly basic book like this was too high. I can't spend time complaining Amazon for refund for such a small amount. But want to alert everyone in case you get fooled by positive reviews hee. Not worth your time.

As a long time investor in stocks, mutual funds, options and most recently futures I was looking to learn more about Algorithmic trading for the retail trader and ran across Kevin Davey. I liked the fact that he emphasizes basic principles and setting realistic goals. Even stating that Algo trading is not for every investor and may not be for you. I was going to buy his first book but this one seemed more appropriate for me plus It was brand new. It is an up to date easy to read guide to the basics. Graphics are a little weak though, small and hard to see but he actually will send them all to you them as .tif files so you can see them clearly.The book also provides step by step instructions in how to get started. I feel this book got me pointed in the right direction to begin developing my own strategies.

Kevin's book opened my eyes to algo trading. I recently entered the algo marketplace only to get beat up and ended up exactly where I started. So to the uninitiated, I say hitch your wagon to a guy like Kevin. Drink deeply if you want to enter his domain and learn, This book is a great place to start. But makes this book a first step to the incredibly deep and complex world of Algo trading if you so desire.

This is a self published, small, 78 page paperback with super basic information. It definitely doesn't show you "how retail traders can successfully compete with professional traders" as written on the title page. Also: most plots are so tiny and low resolution that the text in the plot is blurred out to the level of being unreadable.

Kevin is a real trader and I would highly recommend his work. This book is a good read for beginners, or those that are considering algo trading for a living. Kevin covers all the basics of algo trading, advantages, disadvantages, platforms, development process and etc

This is a great introduction to algo trading by one of the best in the business. Kevin has written a clear and easy to read book that has great advice and code for beginners and might assist those traders who are deciding whether or not algo trading is for them. Highly recommended :)

I bought this book with zero knowledge of yarn dyeing. I got past the beginning with the parts about tools, dyes, etc. As I started looking at the projects, I noticed that there were "ingredients" such as synthropol and soda ash, which I hadn't remembered seeing anything about. I assumed I had missed that part, but I kept looking and couldn't find anything about the chemicals used in dyeing.I ended up being very confused about the whole thing. I paid to take a class at my local yarn shop instead. After the class, I found the book made much more sense and was quite useful.I did get confused with one part -- she said to make a 10 yard in diameter skein, but I thought that was awfully long. I actually contacted her and she said 5 yards up, 5 yards down. That's more like "circumference" than "diameter," and it makes a really big difference.In searching the Internet, I found a book reviewer who was also confused by the lack of information on the chemicals, just like I was. She contacted the publisher, who told her that the author agreed she needed to add a chapter on that next time around. I feel kinda sad that I bought an incomplete version of the book.All that said, I am taking on one of the projects in the book -- from dyeing to making a sweater, and it's been fun. That's one thing I really like about it. It doesn't just give general technique, it gives a finished yarn and then shows you exactly how to get there, including the exact yarns used. Then it gives you a project you can make out of the yarn.I also think that in addition to the specific projects, it would be nice to get very general use of the dyes. For instance, Jacquard acid dyes. Give an explanation of how they work, what you need and how to generally use them. Then give specific projects and explanations for achieving them.I do like the book, despite it's shortfalls, and the author was very nice when I contacted her.

Finally, a solution to when I know just what I want to make and what color or colors I want to be, but can't find that pefect fiber in that perfect color or combination. Now I can do it myself!This book is a wonderful introduction and course in differnt dyeing techniques with lots of color, plenty of patterns to work up, and suggestions for using the various dyes with different fibers. Great attention to the details of what each dyeing process is, what tools are needed, safety precautions, and then great examples of knitted or crocheted garments using each specific process with different fibers. It will give any dyer inspiring ideas, but especially encouraging to the beginning dyer, me being one of them.Also has important reminders that dyeing is an art, not just a science. It's nice to have the ups and downs pointed out and the practice sessions done on someone else's "dime." When I start dyeing, I'll know what to look out for and what I can expect from each process and which process yields what effect on specific fibers.Charming interviews with different dyers. It's nice to put faces and stories to some of the yarns I covet and admire.A terrific book. I am enjoying it not only just for the information, but looking at the great pictures really started my creative juices flowing. I've already started planning several different projects and I'm looking forward to following the excellent instructions using different dyeing techniques and fibers to create my own unique yarns.

This book is one of the best books on dyeing I have seen. It shows how numerous dyers set about their work, giving other dyers concrete information and excellent pictures. The patterns are an extra bonus. The pictures are inspiring and made me want to dig out my dye pots and get started -- but --it is 30F here, so it would be hard to accomplish as my dye kitchen is located in my back yard the weather is not cooperating.

I am currently using this book to learn how to acid dye my homespun yarns. I loved the articles on the individual fiber artists, and the really clear instructions on not only the different dyes, but the techniques involved. This is a priceless addition to my library that will be used again and again!

Great book on different methods of dyeing your own fiber. Have referred back to it several times. Would definitely recommend it as a resource for dyeing.

This is a very practical guide to the vaious dye products available and ways to use each type. The dyes are specifically referred to by brand name and the book is VERY helpful.

Very nice book! Colorful and full of projects from beginning to end! I have dyed a bit with Kool aid on wool, so this is a good book for beginners, as well as seasoned spinners. Quite a lot of information on spinning techniques and how to make many different types of yarns. She is very descriptive and does a very good job of teaching step by step. It's a new book for me and I am looking forward to using many of the techniques she teaches in the book.

Pastor Evans maintain to put a spiritual concepts into everyday language, which is very helpful in my work as a Mental Health Peer Counselor. It guide me directions when I facilitate groups at Metropolitan Hospital in NYC where I worked in The Mental Health Inpatient Unit. Even though this is a career, I can say this is true ministry in helping individuals that are dealing with Mental Illness and Substance Abuse that there is hope with recovery. This book is great for individuals that are visual in setting up goals like me.

I love Dr. Evans teaching and hoped to utilize some of the stories he told into my own sermons. While I enjoy reading them, I have yet to find an illustration that was even partially useful. The book is well laid out and indexed... Unfortunately, the topics covered have yet to find their way into any sermons after 6-7 months after purchase.

I loved this book within minutes of starting to read it. Illustrations are a great way to get a point across and people seem to remember "stories" more than just sayings to get the point across. Very pleased with this book and eager to share with others.

When driving a nail through a board, old timers often bent the point of the nail over, they cinched the nail. That what illustrations do with a sermon. Enjoy the wit and Wisdom of Dr. Evans’ memorable messages.

This is just one of the many good books that Dr. Tony Evans offers. I highly recommend it.

Pastor Evans manages to put spiritual concepts into everyday language, which is very helpful in my work in children's ministry. It helps adults, too, especially if you are a "visual" person like me!

I usually don't write reviews but in the case of the index I had to.... There is nothing wrong with the index. The numbers listed in the index are not page numbers. They correlate with the number noted at the end of each illustration. I received my book earlier than expected, in perfect condition, and I paid a good price for it.
