I've been trading algorithmically for eight years. This is one of the best books that I've seen for a beginning algorithmic trader. I wish it had been available when I was starting out! Instead, I had to learn from the school of hard knocks. (I made plenty of mistakes at first.)This book is rather sort. However, it offers excellent "getting started" introduction of why algorithmic trading can work (if done correctly) and discusses the software packages that you'll need to get started. It doesn't get into the details of specific trading algorithms (a more-advanced topic), but it will help get you started.After you've read this book, you can turn to other books, like those from Larry Connors or Keith Fitschen, for ideas about specific trading strategies that provably work. This book gives you the enough information to get started with testing and programming strategies like these for yourself.

The book claims are unjustified to speak mildly. I really wasn't looking for an overly basic defn of algo trading and some sloppy high level rules to live by. Yes, the author does provide some examples. But they are good if you happen to have TradeStation. He should have made less exaggerated claims and should have noted in bold - examples are only applicable to TradeStation. I thought even $2.99 for a worthless overly basic book like this was too high. I can't spend time complaining Amazon for refund for such a small amount. But want to alert everyone in case you get fooled by positive reviews hee. Not worth your time.

As a long time investor in stocks, mutual funds, options and most recently futures I was looking to learn more about Algorithmic trading for the retail trader and ran across Kevin Davey. I liked the fact that he emphasizes basic principles and setting realistic goals. Even stating that Algo trading is not for every investor and may not be for you. I was going to buy his first book but this one seemed more appropriate for me plus It was brand new. It is an up to date easy to read guide to the basics. Graphics are a little weak though, small and hard to see but he actually will send them all to you them as .tif files so you can see them clearly.The book also provides step by step instructions in how to get started. I feel this book got me pointed in the right direction to begin developing my own strategies.

Kevin's book opened my eyes to algo trading. I recently entered the algo marketplace only to get beat up and ended up exactly where I started. So to the uninitiated, I say hitch your wagon to a guy like Kevin. Drink deeply if you want to enter his domain and learn, This book is a great place to start. Also: most plots are so tiny and low resolution that the text in the plot is blurred out to the level of being unreadable.

Kevin is a real trader and I would highly recommend his work. This book is a good read for beginners, or those that are considering algo trading for a living. Kevin covers all the basics of algo trading, advantages, disadvantages, platforms, development process and etc

This is a great introduction to algo trading by one of the best in the business. Kevin has written a clear and easy to read book that has great advice and code for beginners and might assist those traders who are deciding whether or not algo trading is for them. Highly recommended :)

I bought this book with zero knowledge of yarn dyeing. I got past the beginning with the parts about tools, dyes, etc. As I started looking at the projects, I noticed that there were "ingredients" such as synthropol and soda ash, which I hadn't remembered seeing anything about. I assumed I had missed that part, but I kept looking and couldn't find anything about the chemicals used in dyeing.I ended up being very confused about the whole thing. I paid to take a class at my local yarn shop instead. After the class, I found the book made much more sense and was quite useful.I did get confused with one part -- she said to make a 10 yard in diameter skein, but I thought that was awfully long. I actually contacted her and she said 5 yards up, 5 yards down. That's more like "circumference" than "diameter," and it makes a really big difference.In searching the Internet, I found a book reviewer who was also confused by the lack of information on the chemicals, just like I was. She contacted the publisher, who told her that the author agreed she needed to add a chapter on that next time around. I feel kinda sad that I bought an incomplete version of the book.All that said, I am taking on one of the projects in the book -- from dyeing to making a sweater, and it's been fun. That's one thing I really like about it. It doesn't just give general technique, it gives a finished yarn and then shows you exactly how to get there, including the exact yarns used. Then it gives you a project you can make out of the yarn.I also think that in addition to the specific projects, it would be nice to get very general use of the dyes. For instance, Jacquard acid dyes. Give an explanation of how they work, what you need and how to generally use them. Then give specific projects and explanations for achieving them.I do like the book, despite it's shortfalls, and the author was very nice when I contacted her.

Finally, a solution to when I know just what I want to make and what color or colors I want to be, but can't find that pefect fiber in that perfect color or combination. Now I can do it myself!This book is a wonderful introduction and course in differnt dyeing techniques with lots of color, plenty of patterns to work up, and suggestions for using the various dyes with different fibers. Great attention to the details of what each dyeing process is, what tools are needed, safety precautions, and then great examples of knitted or crocheted garments using each specific process with different fibers. It will give any dyer inspiring ideas, but especially encouraging to the beginning dyer, me being one of them.Also has important reminders that dyeing is an art, not just a science. It's nice to have the ups and downs pointed out and the practice sessions done on someone else's "dime." When I start dyeing, I'll know what to look out for and what I can expect from each process and which process yields what effect on specific fibers.Charming interviews with different dyers. It's nice to put faces and stories to some of the yarns I covet and admire.A terrific book. I am enjoying it not only just for the information, but looking at the great pictures really started my creative juices flowing. I've already started planning several different projects and I'm looking forward to following the excellent instructions using different dyeing techniques and fibers to create my own unique yarns.

This book is one of the best books on dyeing I have seen. It shows how numerous dyers set about their work, giving other dyers concrete information and excellent pictures. The patterns are an extra bonus. The pictures are inspiring and made me want to dig out my dye pots and get started -- but --it is 30F here, so it would be hard to accomplish as my dye kitchen is located in my back yard the weather is not cooperating.

I am currently using this book to learn how to acid dye my homespun yarns. I loved the articles on the individual fiber artists, and the really clear instructions on not only the different dyes, but the techniques involved. This is a priceless addition to my library that will be used again and again!

Great book on different methods of dyeing your own fiber. Have referred back to it several times. Would definitely recommend it as a resource for dyeing.

This is a very practical guide to the vaious dye products available and ways to use each type. The dyes are specifically referred to by brand name and the book is VERY helpful.

Very nice book! Colorful and full of projects from beginning to end! I have dyed a bit with Kool aid on wool, so this is a good book for beginners, as well as seasoned spinners. Quite a lot of information on spinning techniques and how to make many different types of yarns. She is very descriptive and does a very good job of teaching step by step. It's a new book for me and I am looking forward to using many of the techniques she teaches in the book.

Pastor Evans maintain to put a spiritual concepts into everyday language, which is very helpful in my work as a Mental Health Peer Counselor. Even though this is a career, I can say this is true ministry in helping individuals that are dealing with Mental Illness and Substance Abuse that there is hope with recovery. This book is great for individuals that are visual in setting up goals like me.

I love Dr. Evans teaching and hoped to utilize some of the stories he told into my own sermons. While I enjoy reading them, I have yet to find an illustration that was even partially useful. The book is well laid out and indexed... Unfortunately, the topics covered have yet to find their way into any sermons after 6-7 months after purchase.

I loved this book within minutes of starting to read it. Illustrations are a great way to get a point across and people seem to remember "stories" more than just sayings to get the point across. Very pleased with this book and eager to share with others.

When driving a nail through a board, old timers often bent the point of the nail over, they cinched the nail. That what illustrations do with a sermon. Enjoy the wit and Wisdom of Dr. Evans’ memorable messages.

I first read this book when I was twelve years old. My local librarian had recommended A Wrinkle In Time, and that was so great that I hunted down the only other L'Engle book available to me at that time. I found the boarding school life fascinating, totally unimagineable to me at the time. Skiing as well. Flip's first trembling forays into love, real responsibility, ethics, and morality are all something any young child can relate to. This was a wonderful read; still is.

I have loved this book ever since I first read it around age 10. My daughters, now grown up, also read and loved it and still take it on every family ski trip we make! The setting in Switzerland is magical, and even the school is a place you'd want to be (I did!) Philippa is a totally human, identifiable fifteen-year-old, with her faults, foibles and very understandable feelings--I love her roommates, too, especially Erma.At the same time, there is a dark side present in the aftermath of post-WWII Europe and the atrocities of Nazi Germany, from which Europe is still recovering. Through Paul and his parents' fate, through the life of Madame Perceval (Philippa's favorite teacher) and also, most sensititvely, through the divisions in Erma's family, there is realism, interjected into adolescent lives and concerns.Good triumphs, however, and no one can be left un-cheering (and dry-eyed) at the end.I will re-read this book every few years for the rest of my life!

If you are currently roaming the various written reviews deciding whether or not to read this book, stop, and read it. I guarantee you will not find a better written yet beautifully simple story. I believe this book will appeal particularly to teens (I say so because I am one) if not any age, and believe me when I say this, I do not (emphasis on the not) write reviews, but this book just demanded one even at 2:oo in the morning. To any readers who like romance, this is my favorite type, awkard in just the right way and deep yet relatable (not in a complicatly confusing manner as some books tend to gravitate towards). No doubt this book is well written, and in my opinion this book is better than A Wrinkle In Time, which I also love dearly. The scenes are described so vividly, and in such a straight forward manner with every word leaving a lasting impression. This is truly a must read, and once again, very relatable. I am so glad I stumbled upon this rare discovery! Despite being an avid book reader it has been a while since I've been so blown away.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book! It was such an enjoyable read. Will recommend it to my granddaughters!

Don't hesitate to read this one. I have always loved L'Engle's writing, and this novel did not disappoint. I instantly felt connection to the main character, Flip, and loved going through the school year with her.

Wonderful and sweet! Written in a time when the young were allowed to be young. Very enjoyable and a great work of fiction for the young of all ages.

Loved this book as a child, still good memories. My Aunt gave me the paperback years ago and it was lost. Happy to have it again.

A Granddaughter gift and she liked as usual, and couldn't put it down until the end.

Everyone has an agenda with Marx. The Second International under Kautsky used him to justify its minimal/maximal programmes of de facto collaboration with the bourgeois state. Lenin and Trotsky used him to demonstrate unavoidable, terminal contradictions within capitalism and the necessity of violent revolution. Bourgeois writers distorted his words while left-liberals saw him as a much-maligned but benign genius, whose far-sighted humanity had been co-opted by extremists.Gareth Stedman Jones’s response has been a deep, immersive dive into the history, politics and ideas which swirled around the contemporary Marx. For most of the book it seems that Jones – along with the reader - has become an invisible member of that small group of friends, colleagues and acolytes of ‘Karl’ as he lives his life from one month to the next responding to events. Jones appears to have read everything important in those debates and to be intimately acquainted with the detailed history of Western Europe and America during Marx’s lifetime (1818 – 1883).The picture which emerges is much more realistic than the disengaged, omniscient oracle of legend. Marx starts as a classicist and aspiring poet with some legal training. Always political (the ‘Young Hegelians’), he is not at first interested in economics, much preferring philosophy, the subject of his PhD. In the 1840s he supports himself by radical journalism which was to remain his career through most of his life: it was not lucrative.‘Capital’ was written in the 1860s, in London. Jones describes the major innovations which Marx introduced – specifically the clear distinctions between use-value and exchange-value, the concept of surplus value and the analysis of generalised commodity production as distinctive of capitalism. Here, the exploitative character of capitalism has been laid bare, while in the tendency of the average rate of profit to fall (through an ever-increasing level of automation - ‘constant capital’) a rationale was proposed for inherent limits of the capitalist mode of production.It was here, according to Jones, that Marx ran out of steam. Although he had a decade or more of life ahead of him he was unable to resolve a number of theoretical problems. How was the abstract concept of exchange-value translated into prices as seen in the shops and on the stock exchanges? How did capitalism interact with the pre-capitalist world as it expanded across the world - what was the nature of the dynamic and to what extent was ‘imperialism’ forced by its very nature? How could we understand the distinctive incarnations of the capitalist state?Whenever Marx was under deadlines to write up his analysis of these issues, promised for the later volumes of ‘Capital’, ill-health seemed to intervene – liver problems, headaches and those famous ‘carbuncles’. Jones suggests this was not an accident.Marx was not incredibly famous during his lifetime. He was for periods notorious however - demonised by the press as a dangerous agitator in the aftermath of the Paris Commune of 1871. Meanwhile ‘Capital’ volume one sold well enough (one wonders how much of it was read, however). His real fame came posthumously when his views, as packaged by Engels, became very convenient – in a crude form - as a foundational vision for the influential German Social-Democratic Party (the Erfurt Programme). Things never looked back after that.Gareth Stedman Jones has written a stellar book here, the scholarship immense. The reader truly feels present in Marx’s life and times. Jones shows how frequently Marx was wrong, tending to impose his ideas as a smothering straightjacket over the complexity and subtlety of political events. Yet he also showed more insight than many of his left-wing colleagues while his thinking was far deeper and more profound. We should also not forget that, in journalistic terms, he was a highly-talented writer.I have a small quibble: Jones has scrupulously adopted an observational tone, with only small amounts of critical commentary on the more theoretical issues. I would have welcomed a chapter, perhaps at the end, where the author could have summed up what he thought Marx’s fundamental contributions had been - and more specifically, where he though Marx had been intellectually defeated.Note: while this is an excellent book, it does presuppose the reader is actually interested in the intellectual debates and political disputes of mid-nineteenth century Europe. If you feel underwhelmed, for example, by the issues which so agitated the Young Hegelians, it’s unlikely that you’ll get past the early chapters.

Enjoying the Marx biography. That is, until I hit the following gross anachronism: "In Brandenburg-Prussia, there was a return to an Evangelical and fundamentalist form of Christianity..." (page 69) This observation (repeated on the next page) might not be an unforgivable sin. But for a serious historian, it might as well be."Evangelical" is OK."Fundamentalist?" No way.Fundamentalism is a unique early 20th c. American phenomenon, almost a full 100 years after the time Jones describes. It's a bit like Marx driving a Model-T or flying in a Sopwith Camel. Is the author pandering to his audience? I'll keep reading. But my Spidey Sense is tingling.[This review is actually from Shelly's husband, John]

Loved it. Although heavy to read. No vacations or relaxing kinda reading. But puts a tremendous historical perspective, personal insights and reasoning behind Marx's magnanimous work.

Jones does a splendid job of placing Marx in the context of his times; he is able to show how Marx's ideas changed over time and how they were used and sometimes distorted by his heirs in the Communist movement. The rather chaotic domestic life of Marx is richly depicted without being allowed to overbalance a fair evaluation of this important thinker's contribution to knowledge and his struggle to master and to understand the history and economics of his day.

This was a gift to my husband who is a serious student of Marx. He is more than half way through and remains tremendously impressed with the author's grasp of the intellectual issues that were the context for Marx's writings.

It was great but perhaps too much information. I guess I would prefer a straight philosophical biography of ideas rather than mixed with his personal life.

The greatest strength of this book is Stedman Jones’s thorough understanding of the intellectual lay of the land—including the variations between the intellectual landscapes in different Western European countries and how they changed over time. More than just being able to tell you which ideas influenced Marx, he tells you how Marx adopted them—which ideas he adopted whole, which he adopted in an idiosyncratic fashion without fully understanding what they meant to their originators, which ideas he stubbornly clung to even when events seemed to disprove them, which ideas slowly changed in his mind over time. One outstanding example of this is his portrait of Marx, Arnold Ruge, and other German Hegelian confreres in Parisian exile. Stedman Jones says outright that they did not really understand the debates going on around them (coming from a Prussian context in which radical atheists warred against a conservative Christian monarch, they were ill-equipped to understand the Christian socialist labor movements they encountered in Paris) and thus adopted French radicals’ class terminology (including familiar terms like proletarian) while still preserving an essentially German mindset. A more macro-level example is Stedman Jones’s argument that Marx failed to grasp the importance of democratic politics and political participation in the age of mass media, deriding Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte as a farce instead of recognizing him as the exemplar of a new populist democratic form of politics.Stedman Jones is also prepared to criticize Marx’s intellectual project in a substantive and rather deep-going way. He argues that Marx was unable to complete volumes two and three of Capital because of “intellectual difficulties”—because he couldn’t manage to make it coherent and convincing.The book is at its best as an analytical and critical intellectual biography—when talking about the development of ideas, not people. The more conventional biographical information is present, and is occasionally well-done (especially when talking about Marx’s youth) but other times it seems to be in there purely out of obligation. The chronology can be a little confusing. In a given chapter, Stedman Jones may start out by giving a historical overview of an era; then, without sufficiently signaling it, he’ll start surveying the same era a second time from a different angle, with the result that the reader will suddenly be surprised by the same events happening twice or out of chronological order. At its most farcical this involves Marx’s daughters reacting to their mother’s death dozens of pages before it even occurs. The mix of intellectual history and biography is not always well done, and the structure of the book is a little odd and disjointed.In fact, I fear that GSJ’s framing of this book as a biography means that some of his most interesting arguments are never properly developed. In his prologue and epilogue, Stedman Jones explains some of his rationale for writing this biography. He explains that very, very quickly after Marx’s death, August Bebel, Karl Kautsky, Engels, and other socialists of the turn of the century began, very intentionally, to create a mythos of Marx as a forbidding genius; at the same time, the doctrine known as Marxism began to be formalized in a way that emphasized certain of Marx’s (and Engels’s) ideas at the expense of others. Certain of Marx’s ideas went down the memory hole in a very weird way. Thus Stedman Jones states his ambition to “put Marx back in his nineteenth-century surroundings” and recover a true account of Marx’s intellectual development in order correct a false, mythologized one. But that contrast is left implicit in 99 percent of this book. His project is an interesting one. In my opinion he should have made the stakes much clearer and pointed out much more clearly at which points of his book he was contradicting the received wisdom (of 19th- and 20th-century socialism, of Marxism-Leninism, of previous biographers). Instead this is an intellectual biography that is scrupulous about putting Marx in his context, but does not put itself in context.
