I first read this book when I was twelve years old. My local librarian had recommended A Wrinkle In Time, and that was so great that I hunted down the only other L'Engle book available to me at that time. I found the boarding school life fascinating, totally unimagineable to me at the time. Skiing as well. Flip's first trembling forays into love, real responsibility, ethics, and morality are all something any young child can relate to. This was a wonderful read; still is.

I have loved this book ever since I first read it around age 10. My daughters, now grown up, also read and loved it and still take it on every family ski trip we make! The setting in Switzerland is magical, and even the school is a place you'd want to be (I did!) Philippa is a totally human, identifiable fifteen-year-old, with her faults, foibles and very understandable feelings--I love her roommates, too, especially Erma.At the same time, there is a dark side present in the aftermath of post-WWII Europe and the atrocities of Nazi Germany, from which Europe is still recovering. Through Paul and his parents' fate, through the life of Madame Perceval (Philippa's favorite teacher) and also, most sensititvely, through the divisions in Erma's family, there is realism, interjected into adolescent lives and concerns.Good triumphs, however, and no one can be left un-cheering (and dry-eyed) at the end.I will re-read this book every few years for the rest of my life!

If you are currently roaming the various written reviews deciding whether or not to read this book, stop, and read it. I guarantee you will not find a better written yet beautifully simple story. I believe this book will appeal particularly to teens (I say so because I am one) if not any age, and believe me when I say this, I do not (emphasis on the not) write reviews, but this book just demanded one even at 2:oo in the morning. To any readers who like romance, this is my favorite type, awkard in just the right way and deep yet relatable (not in a complicatly confusing manner as some books tend to gravitate towards). No doubt this book is well written, and in my opinion this book is better than A Wrinkle In Time, which I also love dearly. The scenes are described so vividly, and in such a straight forward manner with every word leaving a lasting impression. This is truly a must read, and once again, very relatable. I am so glad I stumbled upon this rare discovery! Despite being an avid book reader it has been a while since I've been so blown away.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book! It was such an enjoyable read. Will recommend it to my granddaughters!

Don't hesitate to read this one. I have always loved L'Engle's writing, and this novel did not disappoint. I instantly felt connection to the main character, Flip, and loved going through the school year with her.

Wonderful and sweet! Written in a time when the young were allowed to be young. Very enjoyable and a great work of fiction for the young of all ages.

Loved this book as a child, still good memories. My Aunt gave me the paperback years ago and it was lost. Happy to have it again.

A Granddaughter gift and she liked as usual, and couldn't put it down until the end.

Karl Marx: Greatness and Illusion, by Gareth Stedman Jones

Review

“A deeply original and illuminating account of Marx's journey through the intellectual history of the nineteenth century. Stedman Jones explores the friendships, affinities, rivalries and hatreds that shaped Marx's life with elegance and analytical brilliance. He anchors his narrative in a startlingly textured account of the society and politics of Marx's era. Most important of all, he brings to life the thoughts of a plethora of other writers, showing how Marx's engagements with the thoughts of others enabled him to navigate a course that often had little or nothing to do with the Marxism of the twentieth century. A profound reappraisal and a gripping read.”―Christopher Clark, author of The Sleepwalkers“Stedman Jones has a deserved and longstanding international reputation as a highly distinguished modern historian. He has written a wonderful book faithful to the messy reality of Marx’s life and intellectual evolution.”―David Leopold, University of Oxford“It is the achievement of Stedman Jones’s great biography that it weds sensitivity to Marx’s singular individuality with deep understanding of the philosophical and political contributions that make this particular individual worthy of our attention and paints Marx’s life and thought on a canvas that amounts to nothing less than a history of nineteenth-century Europe.”―Warren Breckman, University of Pennsylvania“This is a masterly instance of intellectual biography, sure to be the standard work on the subject in any language. Stedman Jones is the only biographer or commentator who successfully explicates Marx’s intense engagements with his political milieux. Karl Marx: Greatness and Illusion presents not just a ‘rounded’ picture of his subject, but an intelligible one.”―Terrell Carver, University of Bristol“[A] clear-eyed biography of the founding theorist of communism. In Jones’s well-drawn portrait, Marx is an unappealing figure…Jones’s criticism of Marx’s philosophy is sharp but balanced…[He] clears up some of the mythology surrounding this controversial icon and his thinking.”―Publishers Weekly“[A] fine new biography…[A] rich and subtle account…Stedman Jones’s book is not a biography in the unbuttoned personal sense…It is more a Life-Times, in which Marx’s physical and intellectual travels are recounted against a carefully inked-in historical background…Gareth Stedman Jones performs the delicate task of disassembling the doctrine without dismissing the thinker, cutting the wires that link the two with all the delicacy of a bomb disposal expert. It is a remarkable and irreplaceable achievement.”―Ferdinand Mount, Times Literary Supplement“Karl Marx: Greatness and Illusion, by the British historian Gareth Stedman Jones, has many virtues, among them a graceful style of narration that will guide even readers unfamiliar with 19th-century history through the period’s political controversies. Stedman Jones has a keen grasp of intellectual history, and skillfully conveys the various themes in philosophy and economics from which Marx forged his own ideas. He has written the definitive biography of Marx for our time.”―Peter E. Gordon, New York Times Book Review“Important…[Stedman Jones] bring[s] exceptional learning to the business of rooting Marx in the intellectual and political life of nineteenth-century Europe.”―Louis Menand, New Yorker“[Stedman Jones] writes quite well about the development of Marx’s intellectual circle and outlook, but he also regularly reminds us of the little human details of the man…Karl Marx: Greatness and Illusion is ultimately, amazingly, a bright and readable biography.”―Steve Donoghue, Open Letters Monthly“Stedman Jones makes Marx a man in his time, forever reading, revising, and yearning to puzzle out his emerging global present. Karl Marx: Greatness and Illusion is a majestically important book about an intellectual struggling to make sense of a rapidly integrating world; it is also a fascinating portrait of that world seen through one mind’s eye.”―Jeremy Adelman, Public Books

Everyone has an agenda with Marx. The Second International under Kautsky used him to justify its minimal/maximal programmes of de facto collaboration with the bourgeois state. Lenin and Trotsky used him to demonstrate unavoidable, terminal contradictions within capitalism and the necessity of violent revolution. Bourgeois writers distorted his words while left-liberals saw him as a much-maligned but benign genius, whose far-sighted humanity had been co-opted by extremists.Gareth Stedman Jones’s response has been a deep, immersive dive into the history, politics and ideas which swirled around the contemporary Marx. For most of the book it seems that Jones – along with the reader - has become an invisible member of that small group of friends, colleagues and acolytes of ‘Karl’ as he lives his life from one month to the next responding to events. Jones appears to have read everything important in those debates and to be intimately acquainted with the detailed history of Western Europe and America during Marx’s lifetime (1818 – 1883).The picture which emerges is much more realistic than the disengaged, omniscient oracle of legend. Marx starts as a classicist and aspiring poet with some legal training. Always political (the ‘Young Hegelians’), he is not at first interested in economics, much preferring philosophy, the subject of his PhD. In the 1840s he supports himself by radical journalism which was to remain his career through most of his life: it was not lucrative.‘Capital’ was written in the 1860s, in London. Jones describes the major innovations which Marx introduced – specifically the clear distinctions between use-value and exchange-value, the concept of surplus value and the analysis of generalised commodity production as distinctive of capitalism. Here, the exploitative character of capitalism has been laid bare, while in the tendency of the average rate of profit to fall (through an ever-increasing level of automation - ‘constant capital’) a rationale was proposed for inherent limits of the capitalist mode of production. It was here, according to Jones, that Marx ran out of steam. Although he had a decade or more of life ahead of him he was unable to resolve a number of theoretical problems. How was the abstract concept of exchange-value translated into prices as seen in the shops and on the stock exchanges? How did capitalism interact with the pre-capitalist world as it expanded across the world - what was the nature of the dynamic and to what extent was ‘imperialism’ forced by its very nature? How could we understand the distinctive incarnations of the capitalist state?Whenever Marx was under deadlines to write up his analysis of these issues, promised for the later volumes of ‘Capital’, ill-health seemed to intervene – liver problems, headaches and those famous ‘carbuncles’. Jones suggests this was not an accident.Marx was not incredibly famous during his lifetime. He was for periods notorious however - demonised by the press as a dangerous agitator in the aftermath of the Paris Commune of 1871. Meanwhile ‘Capital’ volume one sold well enough (one wonders how much of it was read, however). His real fame came posthumously when his views, as packaged by Engels, became very convenient – in a crude form - as a foundational vision for the influential German Social-Democratic Party (the Erfurt Programme). Things never looked back after that.Gareth Stedman Jones has written a stellar book here, the scholarship immense. The reader truly feels present in Marx’s life and times. Jones shows how frequently Marx was wrong, tending to impose his ideas as a smothering straightjacket over the complexity and subtlety of political events. Yet he also showed more insight than many of his left-wing colleagues while his thinking was far deeper and more profound. We should also not forget that, in journalistic terms, he was a highly-talented writer.I have a small quibble: Jones has scrupulously adopted an observational tone, with only small amounts of critical commentary on the more theoretical issues. I would have welcomed a chapter, perhaps at the end, where the author could have summed up what he thought Marx’s fundamental contributions had been - and more specifically, where he though Marx had been intellectually defeated.Note: while this is an excellent book, it does presuppose the reader is actually interested in the intellectual debates and political disputes of mid-nineteenth century Europe. If you feel underwhelmed, for example, by the issues which so agitated the Young Hegelians, it’s unlikely that you’ll get past the early chapters.

Enjoying the Marx biography. That is, until I hit the following gross anachronism: "In Brandenburg-Prussia, there was a return to an Evangelical and fundamentalist form of Christianity..." (page 69) This observation (repeated on the next page) might not be an unforgivable sin. But for a serious historian, it might as well be."Evangelical" is OK."Fundamentalist?" No way.Fundamentalism is a unique early 20th c. American phenomenon, almost a full 100 years after the time Jones describes. It's a bit like Marx driving a Model-T or flying in a Sopwith Camel. Is the author pandering to his audience? I'll keep reading. But my Spidey Sense is tingling.[This review is actually from Shelly's husband, John]

Loved it. Although heavy to read. No vacations or relaxing kinda reading. But puts a tremendous historical perspective, personal insights and reasoning behind Marx's magnanimous work.

Jones does a splendid job of placing Marx in the context of his times; he is able to show how Marx's ideas changed over time and how they were used and sometimes distorted by his heirs in the Communist movement. The rather chaotic domestic life of Marx is richly depicted without being allowed to overbalance a fair evaluation of this important thinker's contribution to knowledge and his struggle to master and to understand the history and economics of his day.

This was a gift to my husband who is a serious student of Marx. He is more than half way through and remains tremendously impressed with the author's grasp of the intellectual issues that were the context for Marx's writings.

It was great but perhaps too much information. I guess I would prefer a straight philosophical biography of ideas rather than mixed with his personal life.

The greatest strength of this book is Stedman Jones’s thorough understanding of the intellectual lay of the land—including the variations between the intellectual landscapes in different Western European countries and how they changed over time. More than just being able to tell you which ideas influenced Marx, he tells you how Marx adopted them—which ideas he adopted whole, which he adopted in an idiosyncratic fashion without fully understanding what they meant to their originators, which ideas he stubbornly clung to even when events seemed to disprove them, which ideas slowly changed in his mind over time. One outstanding example of this is his portrait of Marx, Arnold Ruge, and other German Hegelian confreres in Parisian exile. Stedman Jones says outright that they did not really understand the debates going on around them (coming from a Prussian context in which radical atheists warred against a conservative Christian monarch, they were ill-equipped to understand the Christian socialist labor movements they encountered in Paris) and thus adopted French radicals’ class terminology (including familiar terms like proletarian) while still preserving an essentially German mindset. A more macro-level example is Stedman Jones’s argument that Marx failed to grasp the importance of democratic politics and political participation in the age of mass media, deriding Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte as a farce instead of recognizing him as the exemplar of a new populist democratic form of politics.Stedman Jones is also prepared to criticize Marx’s intellectual project in a substantive and rather deep-going way. He argues that Marx was unable to complete volumes two and three of Capital because of “intellectual difficulties”—because he couldn’t manage to make it coherent and convincing. The book is at its best as an analytical and critical intellectual biography—when talking about the development of ideas, not people. The more conventional biographical information is present, and is occasionally well-done (especially when talking about Marx’s youth) but other times it seems to be in there purely out of obligation. The chronology can be a little confusing. In a given chapter, Stedman Jones may start out by giving a historical overview of an era; then, without sufficiently signaling it, he’ll start surveying the same era a second time from a different angle, with the result that the reader will suddenly be surprised by the same events happening twice or out of chronological order. At its most farcical this involves Marx’s daughters reacting to their mother’s death dozens of pages before it even occurs. The mix of intellectual history and biography is not always well done, and the structure of the book is a little odd and disjointed. In fact, I fear that GSJ’s framing of this book as a biography means that some of his most interesting arguments are never properly developed. In his prologue and epilogue, Stedman Jones explains some of his rationale for writing this biography. He explains that very, very quickly after Marx’s death, August Bebel, Karl Kautsky, Engels, and other socialists of the turn of the century began, very intentionally, to create a mythos of Marx as a forbidding genius; at the same time, the doctrine known as Marxism began to be formalized in a way that emphasized certain of Marx’s (and Engels’s) ideas at the expense of others. Certain of Marx’s ideas went down the memory hole in a very weird way. Thus Stedman Jones states his ambition to “put Marx back in his nineteenth-century surroundings” and recover a true account of Marx’s intellectual development in order correct a false, mythologized one. But that contrast is left implicit in 99 percent of this book. His project is an interesting one. In my opinion he should have made the stakes much clearer and pointed out much more clearly at which points of his book he was contradicting the received wisdom (of 19th- and 20th-century socialism, of Marxism-Leninism, of previous biographers). Instead this is an intellectual biography that is scrupulous about putting Marx in his context, but does not put itself in context.

Decently enough written - ya skill have to have decent SQL skills to get nitty gritty reports out of SCCM ...

Garth Jones - Need I say more? SCCM legend.

Wow not done reading but I have learned a lot it is just what I needed :)

Great book for SCCM reporting needs.

Extremely useful book!

System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM / ConfigMgr) is a robust and complex tool used by SysAdmins to manage systems in their organizations. Similarly, working with reports, creating reports, and generating reports with ConfigMgr can become a complex task and challenging. We all know that the built-in reports are not the best and often don’t yield the results we want to achieve. To get around some of the limitations, you either need to create your own reports or use third party solutions such as the wonderful reports from Enhansoft which are easy to install, configure, and to use. Well, Garth Jones, the owner of Enhansoft has released an awesome book to help clear the mystery of reports and make it super simple for anyone to follow the step-by-step instructions with the intelligently laid out chapters.Whether you’re a beginner and want to learn how to create and work with ConfigMgr reports, or an expert who want to improve your reporting skills and rock it to the next level, this book is for you – I highly recommend it.

I have created a lot of SQL Queries, SSRS Reports on my blog (...) and I have never explained, how you can create SSRS reports on your own. I know that, it is not easy to explain in blog post about the SQL/SSRS Reports. There are lot of books released on System Center Configuration Manager, but there is nothing specifically for Reporting (in-depth) until now. Even though this book is listed for ConfigMgr Current Branch, everything within it also applies to earlier versions too. This book was written by Well-known Configuration Manager MVP Garth Jones and his export Co-authors Dan Toll and Kerrie Meyler. The Unleashed book written by Experts is really fantastic and it has all the content what is needed for you to get complete knowledge on Configuration Reporting, RBA ,SQL views ,SSRS Report Builder and lot more. You’ll walk through installing and configuring SSRS, using SQL views to find the data you need, writing SQL queries, creating basic and advanced reports, and using role-based administration to securely deliver those reports to the correct individuals. Think that most people will love the end of chapter exercises! It help you truly understand the topics within the chapter.Regards,Eswar (...)

I read SCCM guru Garth Jone’s ( + co-authors Dan Toll and Kerrie Meyler) new book on SCCM reporting. I loved the approach they took in the book “System Center Configuration Manager Reporting Unleashed” to explained the complex things like SCCM data collection, State messages, Status Messages, Report Design and RBA based reports. They explained each topics in a very simple and easy way to understand. This is done via real world explanation of each SCCM concept, sample SQL queries and result screen shots. This is an excellent approach to teach SCCM reporting from beginner to expert level. I would highly recommend this book for all IT Pros who wanted to learn more about SCCM reporting and wanted to become expert in creating custom SCCM reports.

As a consulting and clinical psychologist I have the opportunity to plan, organize, and deliver stress management workshops. In fact I delivered one recently and regret that I had not read "The Happiness Equation" prior to that program!Managing personal (and organizational) stress and distress depends on multiple factors including finding ways to bring greater happiness and contentment into our worlds. Mr. Pasricha's outstanding book presents so many practical and useful ways to build happiness which I believe in turn helps people better manage daily stress. Personally I also like the fact that he is a MBA and not a mental health professional, practitioner, or academic since he provides a more "personal" view than simply reporting findings from multiple research studies. (That said, he backs up his content with relevant science and findings as needed.)I take notes in the back of books when I read and "The Happiness Equation" is filled with notes. There are so many practical ideas, many of which I am applying in my own life, that can be easily applied. In my work I always emphasize that happiness is an "inside job" and too often people make happiness contingent, e.g., "I'll be happy when ... (I have that job, make that money, live there ...)." I love that the book starts by reminding the reader of the fallacy associated that belief and the importance of working on happiness first that in term can lead to life outcomes for which we search.Oh, and I shared the book with my wife who also found it incredibly useful! And, I have purchased some of Mr. Pasricha's books and can't wait to read them!Ed Nottingham, PhD, PCCConsulting & Clinical PsychologistAuthor, "It's Not as Bad as It Seems: A Thinking Straight Approach to Happiness" It's Not As Bad As It Seems

About a month before I read this book, it was brought to my attention by a good friend who is also a trusted family adviser. In the 17 years I have known him, he has never before recommended a particular book with such enthusiasm. He literally said this book was going to change his life. With my interest piqued, I logged on and downloaded Neil Pasricha's "The Happiness Equation" while we were still at the restaurant where we were having dinner. Having just finished reading the book, I understand my friend's fascination. This book is a game-changer!I have observed that the most profound statements are stunningly simple. Such is the nature of Pasricha's advice. He explains in every day terms (most of which will have you thinking "Why didn't I think of that?") secrets to happiness, especially how to "want nothing, do anything, and have everything." Carefully selected cartoons and cleverly designed charts (Pasricha calls them "scribbles") help the reader visualize how the flawed approaches of conventional wisdom are preventing us from living fulfilling lives. If you are thinking of reading this book, access the table of comments. You'll see topics like, "The First Five Things You Must Do Before You Can Be Happy," and "Do This and Criticism Can't Touch You." I've seen such teasers before. But Pasricha delivers. You could get this book at the library, but you might want a copy to keep, so that you can check your progress on ways to be happy today, not at some distant time in that elusive future we keep hoping will arrive. As I finish writing this review, I'll be picking up the phone to thank my friend for recommending this book. It is indeed life-changing.

â€œSo don’t you think every college, university, and library would be full of courses and advice on how we can become happier? On how we can make decisions that spur ourselves into positive action every day? When I asked a hospitality CEO if he knew a book, model or website that actually helped people navigate and simplify their most challenging decisions so they can live with contentment, freedom, and happiness, he said, ‘That book doesn’t exist. It would be like asking every high-powered executive, successful person, and positive leader to distill all the personal mental models they’ve created over their lives into one book. Nobody has ever done it.’I know this is true because I’ve been searching for a practical book with real frameworks on leading myself to happiness for years. I wanted something beyond stories about generals, parables about penguins, and research studies with data pointing any which way. I wanted real, I wanted practical, I wanted clear. I wanted an action book that I could use every day. This is that book.”~ Neil Pasricha from The Happiness EquationNeil Pasricha is awesome. And so is this book.Ryan Holiday connected us and I’m glad he did.Neil’s a fascinating guy—a Harvard MBA who runs a site called 1000awesomethings.com who also happens to be the director of leadership development for Walmart, one of the most popular TED speakers ever, the director of the Institute for Global Happiness AND the best-selling author of The Book of AWESOME series—with over 1 million books sold. (<—That is awesome.)He’s also a funny, great writer who packs a ton of super practical wisdom into this quick-reading book. I highly recommend it.I’m excited to share a few of my favorite Big Ideas:1.The Big 7 - Ways to boost your happiness.2. Waking up w/Icky Guy - Is really important.3. Add an Hour to Your Day - Here's how4. Tip from a Great Ohysicist - Just do it.5. It's Saturday AM - What do you do?The wisdom we need is already within. We just need to slow down long enough to see it and then have the courage to live it.More goodness— including PhilosophersNotes on 300+ books in our '*OPTIMIZE*' membership program. Mark Bittman's Quick and Easy Recipes from the New York Times: Featuring 350 recipes from the author of HOW TO COOK EVERYTHING and THE BEST RECIPES IN THE WORLD, by Mark Bittman

From Publishers Weekly

Culling 350 recipes from his New York Times "The Minimalist" column, Bittman offers a go-to volume for anyone who enjoys cooking simply. His recipes are easy to follow and execute, but they maintain a level of sophistication and freshness that many super-quick cookbooks lack. All recipes are marked with a realistic estimate of how much time they require, start to finish: Chicken with Coconut and Lime takes 20 minutes; Sparkling Cider Poached Fish takes 15 minutes; Coq au Vin with Prunes takes an hour. Several of the longer-duration entries don't require much hands-on work; the Bread Pudding with Shiitake Mushrooms, requires "about 1 hour, largely unattended" and the Braised and Brown Lamb with Peaches needs "about 1 ½ hours, largely unattended." Simple sauces, condiments and desserts such as Dried Fruit Poached in Port and Ginger Pots de Crème round out the selection of mostly dinner-appropriate recipes, which are perfect for home cooks who want to put tasty, impressive meals on the table frequently and without much fuss. “Mark Bittman's quick and easy recipes are much more than that, a definitive collection that takes as little as a half hour and results in truly remarkable food. That alone should empower you to drive past the take-out place and do some cooking.” —Mario Batali“Some cooks enjoy giving the impression that their work requires esoteric language and complicated skills. Mark Bittman is just the opposite. He is devoted to making it clear that great food can be created with few ingredients and a minimum of effort.”—John Willoughby and Chris Schlesinger, coauthors of The Thrill of the Grill and License to Grill"Mark Bittman makes great everyday cooking and eating possible in a harried world. He is a master of streamlining good food down to its essence without losing a jot of taste. Mark understands and loves exceptional food and enjoys cooking it. I do not post cookbook reviews. So often the books fall short and are not worth the effort. This one, however, is worthy of a review. I purchased this book on Kindle for my IPad. It is easy to maneuver through the book and quickly click to go to a recipe. The recipes are all quite simple in both ingredients and preparation. There has not been a bad recipe in the bunch. The French Bread recipe could not be easier or better, and frankly the recipe alone was worth the $2.99 Kindle price. If you are looking for classic foods with ingredients you can find everywhere, this book is perfect.

If you don't yet read Mark Bittman, if you don't spend time in the kitchen, if you shop the inside aisles in the supermarket, buy this book. Bittman will open your eyes and bring joy and adventure to your kitchen and your table. And you will soon want to read all that he has written. He is, quite simply, a national treasure and a constant companion in anyone's kitchen. This book will have a place in my kitchen for a half century or so.

I was already a fan of Mark Bittman from his New York Times column and videos and from another of his cookbooks How to Cook Everything The Basics: All You Need to Make Great Food -- With 1,000 Photos. I feel that I really learned a lot from that book and this one picks up where it leaves off with a wide selection of additional recipes. My favorite marinade for beef comes from P. 159 of this book, The Minimalist's Marinated Steak. Pretty much every course and ingredient is covered from soups, salads, pasta and bread, meats, vegetables, and desserts. There are some things I wouldn't have expected, like fairly quick and easy recipes for both roast chicken and roast duck. There are suggestions for pretty much every type of seafood. Each of the main recipes in all sections is accompanied by several variations. There is a definite international influence here, some of it Asian. You'll need ginger, soy sauce, Hoisin sauce, fresh limes, and perhaps even some lemon grass to make everything. However you will also find things from Italy and even a Spanish paella. I have been following the South Beach diet and I was glad to see that so many of the recipes here would qualify for South Beach Phase 2 which is the part of the plan where most time is spent. This book collects, as it says on the cover, recipes which were originally published as three separate cookbooks, so you might want to skip it if you already own one or two of the original books. Also, there are no photos or other illustrations, so this isn't for people who like to flip through nice color photographs of the completed dishes for inspiration. However, if you are comfortable sitting down and reading through all the choices here, I expect that you will find some things, as I did, that you'll be making again and again.

This book is great. I'm a big fan of Mr. Bittman, so I already have a few of the "How to..." books. (They also make great gifts!) The recipes are easy, good for new cooks, or for people looking for some new ideas.

Nice but the print is hard to read - smaller size and very light color of type makes it hard to read.

Best recipes ever! Several have become favorite go-to recipes for my family AND guests. I always get raves.

I love this cookbook and go to these kinds of recipes most often. While I have to agree with one of the reviewers that I do prefer cookbooks with pictures, Bitmann's Quick & Easy is wonderful for last minute great ideas. I attended a culinary writing seminar 3 years ago and when I brought up this publication with the published instructor and her agent, I was just about laughed out of the room. "Pour and dump," they said, "is not culinary expertise." I beg to differ. I think it is the highest form of culinary expertise: to take what is already in your kitchen and perform magic. This is exactly what Bittman has done, given us a manual for creating magic out of simple, everyday ingredients. While I do not live in an urban center with all kinds of fresh fish, for example, available to me on my way home from work, I AM looking for an easy way to create something smashing in the least amount of time possible. And I, personally, am of the humble opinion that this is what most "foodies" today want: a reprieve from convenience and fast food to please their palettes. Whole foods and tasty ingredients do give us that, if we know how to manipulate them. I love this book and it, and other publications like it, take the forefront of my extensive recipe collection.

Loved it! I frequently decide a meal in the grocery store. Having the book on my phone lets me get all the correct ingredients without guessing and forgetting items. All the standards are here.

I just graduated from seminary last year and am collecting preaching resources. Feasting on the Word was recommended by several colleagues so I bought this volume (the current season) and started using it right away. It is a great resource! There are commentaries by a number of excellent scholars from various perspectives on each of the readings--kind of like getting four commentaries in one. The page format is a little clunky, because all four start on the same page as the reading and continue in columns, but once I got used to it, it was fine. I have found that having all the commentaries on all the readings for one Sunday together in one place has made it easier for me to connect more of the readings together in my preaching, using stories from the Old Testament reading, images from the Psalms, etc. that can help illustrate the Gospel reading we tend to focus on. It's making my preaching richer and better.I will be buying all the volumes as we work through the lectionary. I would also recommend this to non-lectionary preachers to use--there is an index to guide you, although you might have to buy the whole set to get the readings you are looking for, Very much worth the price.

Some of the contributors don't really resonate with me, but for the most part something will get me thinking. I find the information provided isn't material I would directly incorporate into my sermons, but it does generate some ideas that I can take in a similar direction. Not a lot of new thought on the scriptures, but it is presented well. Don't expect an in depth look at the text. It is more of a concise overview. The contributors do know their material and I would say you can trust their insights and understandings.

Great resource for RCL texts. I use the mobile version. Outstanding resource.

Feasting on the Word is an excellent resource for those of us who prepare sermons, as well as for the average person in the pew who wants extra information and insight into the scripture readings for the coming Sunday.

As with all the books in this series, this one is excellent. The whole series is very useful for the pastor who is doing RCL preaching.

My favorite commentaries. Theological, Exegetical, Pastoral, and Homiletical perspectives.

This is an invaluable resource for preachers and teachers of the word. It is easier to follow in the Kindle edition than the book in that each article is separate and you don't have to keep paging back and forth. I use it every week as I prepare for worship.

The set of books is an excellent investment for a new minister. Following the lectionary, it provides resources for weekly sermons and Christian observances. So far, I only have seven out of twelve books. I intend to purchase the remaining five books.

First, I would like to thank counselorchick, Kevin Johnson, bankee and any others who have obvious resentments towards AA. It is a program developed in the 1930’s and has been the most effective treatment for their members. It is a fellowship of men and women who have the same desire to stay sober. People who follow the program and commit to it eventually become happy, joyous and free. The program has evolved over time to what it is today. People who are cursed with this disease are NOT able to drink in moderation. I am not saying that I completely believe in the entire philosophy but most of it has merit. I think it is opalling and disgraceful for anyone to blame AA for hurting more people than they’ve helped! Are you f*****g kidding me? There is only one person to blame for the behaviors we exubed. Look in the mirror for the guilty party. The negativity in these posts truly proves how restless, irritable and discontent you are. I’m sure there are other programs that successfully help those with the disease of addiction. AA is not for everyone. It is also never AA’s fault when someone relapses. We are still there at every meeting, trying to help the next sick and suffering person.Your portrayal of the “program” is flawed and inaccurate to say the least. There have been 100’s of thousands of people who are now happy, joyous, free and living a life free of anger, depression, sadness and fear.

Simpley put this book will save your life and inspire you to find a path free of addiction . The first half of the book is how it works in AA the second half is all inspirational stories that truely do inspire you to live a better free of addiction life. Often at first when I first considered I might have an addiction problem I read the stories in the back of the book . I found every story I read was about me in some way . After a few reads I knew it was time to confront my addiction issues . Becuse of this book I am now free of my alcohol addiction and starting to piece my life back together . Any time I feel weak or need a bit fo inspiration I open the book and read for a while .This book is the back bone to AA and 12 step programs it will sve your life if you are honest ans willing . Its said you must hit rock bottom before you can make the journey to recovery but maybe if you read this book you will find a way that you can avoid the horor of the rock bottom experience. Good luck to you may you find the peace and serenity you so deserve in life give this book a shot and you will find a new way of life .

I'm not an alcoholic, but a good friend of mine suggested that I read this to gain a better understanding of "what she's all about." I'm truly glad I did. Not only did it deliver on her claim in spades, but it provided me with one hell of a perspective on everything she and so many others have dealt with, and just how vital a group like Alcoholics Anonymous is. I love reading things that provide me with that level of insight.

I’ve been sober almost six months. Thank god for AA and other such programs.About this book- it explains everything. First half talks about how AA came to be and last half shares inspirational stories of other addicts and alcoholics who have worked the program and now lead sober lifestyles. Very helpful and motivating. For anyone out there struggling with addiction, even if you aren’t ready to seek help, read this book. You at least will know you aren’t alone.

I'm so grateful for this book. My sweet daddy suffered from alcoholism and died unrecovered. Growing up in that, I had a lot of resentment and unresolved pain. This book showed me that my Dad was sick, and it helped me see that even though I do not drink- I was effected by alcoholism. Since I do not have this allergy/disease, I didn't understand it. It makes more sense to me now, and it has helped me on my healing journey. I cannot recommend this enough! I know you get audio chapters on Amazon (I believe it is the 1st Edition). I love the 4th edition. I believe it is worth buying even if you can hear it for free.

Don't get the Kindle version if you need to refer to page numbers. Cryptic "locations" (see pic) will not help if you want to use the "Big Book" for any serious work or study. There are plenty of free or online versions available that are paginated. As far as the actual content goes, who am I to argue with the cornerstone manuscript for a fellowship that has proven to help millions worldwide. IMHO modern medicine will never be able to come close to this free and ubiquitous prescription for dealing with ALL addictions (in MY lifetime at least).

Written many years ago and still relevant for todays alcoholic. I felt the book was telling my story and many times I was struck by the economy and perfection of the prose. i.e. 'a vision for you.' In my opinion this is very much an inspired novel that speaks directly to the alcoholic and offers a proven method of recovery and life seemingly beyond the reach of the active alcoholic....Indispensable information for the suffering alcoholics looking for recovery.

It’s nice to have this book available on Kindle. I use my phone, tablets, Mac and Kindle regularly, so this works well for me. The one thing that I would like to see different about this Kindle edition is to have the pages numbered just as they are for the paper book. The table of contents can help to locate specific information, but generally, I feel that this ebook still falls short. It would be far easier to follow along with other readers and references made about specific passages during meetings and when working with others. This edition doesn’t do this, so I don’t like to use the ebook at meetings. I would love to be able to go to a specific page and have the book handy wherever I go. Other than that, this ebook is still nice to have whenever I want to read it.
