I purchased this book as part of the required reading for a college course. I was surprised at how easy it was to read and how much it kept my attention. I did not want to put the book down. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to invest the time to learn about the history of the Middle East.

I am an amateur student of Middle East history and current events, it's more of a hobby. I have read several books of varying types and I just can't put this one down. The chapters are well organized and it is written in plain, easy to read text. I highly recommend it.

The book is sometimes light on detail when discussing matters such as the Lebanese Civil War and the massacre in Hamas, but it does a great job of educating the reader about historical trends and how they relate to each other. It also moves between country histories and regional history smoothly. If your interest is in North Africa, this is not the best book for you.

I purchased the kindle version of this book as part of the required reading for a History class I am taking. The book is well-written and informative. There have been many times that I have used this book as the main source for papers and discussion assignments. It gives a comprehensive history of the Middle East, including the roles of Islam, interference and support from the West and East, and how the countries we know today came into existence. The only reason I did not give the book 5 stars is because the kindle version does not have page numbers. If I were reading this book for my own enjoyment, this would not have been a problem, but because I needed this book for a class, it was difficult to quote the book as a source with no page numbers. I had to use the Index a lot to count back or forward to the page I needed. The Index is also cut off, so the first two words or so of each entry are cut off, which makes is difficult to find the topic for which I am searching. Other than these formatting issues, the book would have received 5 stars.

For those who want basic knowledge about the Middle East from the Ottoman Empire til today, there is no better source that than William Cleveland's A HISTORY OF THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST 3rd Ed. The book is readable and well organized. The subdivisions of chapters along with their titles facilitate the readers understanding of the topics. At first glance a work of over 500 pages looks extremely challenging however, I actually got to points where I could not put the book down.If there is one thesis that runs through the book I would say it is found in the final conclusion. It is that we fail to understand the legacy spawned by the disemberment of the Ottoman Empire early in the 20th century. "The end of the Ottoman order created new Arab states separated by new borders drawn by British and French officials to serve European imperial interest." Coupled with the desire of Eurpe and America to maintain its supply of oil and the creation of the State of Isreal, there exist a formula for disorder and confusion that will probably never be settled.Cleveland fairly gives both sides of the extremely controversial picture that pits two religions - Islam and Judism - against each other. He shows how both religions are also greater than the concept of religion held by most Americans. In both cases, religion is also a part of the government and law.There are not answers in the book, but for the thinking person who wants to understand the Middle East, Cleveland goes a long way in terms of helping each person come to their own conclusions.

I would summarize this book as an eye opener. I became interested in the topic due to the increased mentions of the Middle East in the news and even casual conversations in the public. Often we rush to offer an opinion on the matter, sadly, before even asking ourselves "do we really know anything about the topic at hand?"Have you ever caught yourself asking "why are Iraqis so divided?", "How did Mecca become the destination of Muslim pilgrimage?", "How do small countries such as Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Qatar get established and survive as separate entities with such large neighbors (don't forget, oil was not in commercial use until 1930s and really after 1940s)?", "Why each Muslim country even though portrayed being the same as the other is really unique (e.g. Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Turkey)". I could go on and on and this book answered ALL of my questions and it sure will answer yours. I was totally shocked at the material and finally believe I can understand and reason on what is happening today.Even more, in general, we repeat the mistakes of history, and this book has plenty of such examples that apply to the current events. Also, in my opinion, it contains one of the best portrayals how world powers balance each other in different regions. If you are scared of behind the scenes manipulations by major players such as USA, China, and Russia in the region, this is nothing new. France, Russia, and Britain were the masters of it long before the current three came around.

Listening or reading the news nowadays becomes increasingly difficult as we hear about unknown nations going through wars and events that we don't understand. Whether you're a student or not, "A History of the Modern Middle East" will help you get a better understanding of foreign affairs. With Cleveland's comprehensive explanation, you will be able to hold an intelligent conversation about today's "New York Times" international news section without sounding like an empty show-off! "I have no clue" will leave your vocabulary.NB: Consider getting the newer edition. Since there is a section on modern politics in this book, the newer version obviously has more valuable, updated information.

I really did want to like this book. However, first of all, it's mean spirited. I'm a stickler, and I'm comfortable with that. But I do not need to see those who are not sticklers put down and repeatedly called illiterate in order to feel better about myself.And that's not the only problem. It is appalling to see someone who is belittling others for their ignorance then point out that she herself is not a grammarian and believes that knowledge of subordinate clauses "is not a prerequisite for caring about where a bracket is preferred to a dash, or a comma needs to be replaced by a semicolon." Actually, you cannot properly punctuate a complex or compound-complex sentence unless you understand subordinate clauses--they often need commas, and many of her subordinate clauses are incorrectly punctuated. You also need grammar to understand that commas should not be between the verb and its direct object, between a preposition and its object, etc. Without a firm understanding of grammar, it is impossible to even discuss why a comma should or should not be in a particular place in a sentence.I don't ordinarily go around pointing this out about someone's writing in reviews, but since the entire purpose here is to discuss punctuation, it seems appropriate.She also makes a huge deal about some movie called Two Weeks Notice and how she feels that the title needed an apostrophe. Again, knowledge of grammar comes in handy here: the argument can be made that in that phrase, "two weeks" is descriptive, not possessive, and therefore, no apostrophe is necessary.All in all, I'm not happy with this book, and I wish I had checked it out from the library instead of buying it.

Hilarious. Well-written. Instructive at times.I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at a book. She has some really clever insight into grammar without being overcome by cynicism.It is interesting to read about the state of grammar in the UK as well. It really defies the stereotype that many Americans have about Brits being stuffy and proper all the time.Even though it isn't a grammar guide, she does offer some tips on usage. I was pleased she clarified the semicolon and colon issue and included several examples. At the same time this wasn't a "montage" of real-world grammar blunders with her corrects and/or snide comments, either.But if you enjoy reading about grammar for fun at all, you'll probably enjoy this book. And even if not, you still might appreciate her witty and sardonic style.And yes, she probably would disapprove of me starting my sentences with "and"...

I bought the book with the advice of a co-worker and accidentally bought the audio CD version/format of the book. My mistake was fortuitous and I have never been happier. The audio format (CD) is a pure delight to listen to as I commute to and from work each day. The people who made the disc did a wonderful job. Very interesting as well as entertaining. I will buy more audio books after this one.Love the book!

One would not expect a book on grammar and punctuation to be hilarious, but Truss brings laughter to almost every page. As one of those annoying people who cannot help but point out grammatical errors in public print (menus and grocers and ebooks, oh my!), I found a kindred spirit in Truss. I only wish she had provided her email address, so I could share with her the most egregious of the sign-errors I see every day. Every Grammar-phile should read this book, and keep it on her person for constant reference. Non Grammar-philes should read this book to learn the love of clarity in writing - and to pick up tools with which to defend it. You, too, could be one of those annoying people, confronting the abuse of quotation marks in greengrocers everywhere!

It's refreshing to read a book by an author who has such an obvious love of written language and all its nuances. To make it even better, Ms Truss has infused the entire work with wit and humor. I especially liked the way she was able to weave in a sense of the history of punctuation and its impact on written English, and I share her concern for the future of all these points, stops, and marks. This is a book to savor again and again.

My ability to puctuate correctly was adequate, but I wanted to be better. I got this book and found it to be an enirely enjoyable read; it gives you confidence to use even the the more unusual punctuation marks correctly......and it's humerous too boot!While the author is from the UK and explains usage common in that region, she also remarks on US usage where it differs. I was surprised to learn that there were regional differences and also that the proper use of punctuation marks is changing--and it always has over time.In addition to being a book that comments on the use (or common misuse) of proper puctuation it is also organized in such a way that people who write can reference a certain item (do you have to use a period after Mr?) and read up if they have a question.People writing e-books might especially appreciate this as many write without an editor; a fun book that makes punctuation accessible without suffering through Strunk and White is very welcome.

While Isobel is informing us of many of the symptoms one puts up with with hyper-mobility. I was expecting more of a general management book any of us with this syndrome could learn from. Instead it is mostly an account of her personal history encounters with physio therapists and doctors.

The most fantastic book to date for the lay person and practitioner alike. Isobel ties in the most up to date research on ED/ HMS and also incorporates daily functional suggestions for thos living with HMS and for those working with people struggling with HMS. As a chronic pain practitioner, I refer to this book weekly and recommend it to my patients with HMS.

Good review. I did not really get any new information, though. It old have been better to have less patient history, and more emphasis and accommodations.

this is not a cold fact-filled book like dr tinkle's on hypermobility, but its personal touch is what makes it readable and actually more useful than the latter. i recommend it to all HEDSers.

And now you’re going to have to pay.  TAKE YOUR MAULING The best thing you can do to avoid injury or death is to shield yourself by going face-down on the ground with your backpack (let’s hope you’re wearing one) protecting your back. Cover your head and neck with your hands and play dead; it’s your best chance of not becoming dead for real.  KEEP QUIET Expect to be batted around, perhaps bitten a few times, and maybe clawed. Stay quiet if you can, which is a tall order when a bear has one of your body parts in her mouth.  WAIT IT OUT When the bear decides you are no longer a threat or an annoyance, she’ll probably huff and wander away. Stay still until she’s long gone.

A broad range of situations and common sense solutions. There were many examples of things that most people would never find themselves, but very entertaining to read. I found myself asking myself for the answer to solving situations before I read them. The book is a very expensive print job with full color bleeds on every page and lots of pictures and drawings. The pages are heavy and somehow makes you think the information is more valuable. There are metal grommets on the cover pages which will keep it from getting dog-eared in spite of the fact that it is a soft cover book. A good value for the money.

I got this as a gag gift for a friend who is moving to extreme northern climes. It's a very interesting book! I hope I never run into any of these situations! My friend and everyone at her going away party loved it!

We have several "Outdoor Life" books. We hope to collect them all. The picture online does not show off what a nice book it is. The books have metal pieces on the corners that prevents the books from being damaged. There are color pictures for almost all the articles. The books are simple, well written and the content is interesting.

I purchased this as a gift for my 11 year old son. He loves the outdoors and all activities that go with it. I've learned quite a bit from the book as well. Great purchase!

Got as a gift for my hubby. He loved it and ahipping was quick.

I learned several new things that I think is important to know, and it refreshed some things my father taught me when I was growing up

"Clean, Well-Lighted Sentences: A Guide to Avoiding the Most Common Errors in Grammar and Punctuation" by Janis Bell is a helpful book for me. Her years of teaching writing (since 1972) shows in her presentation throughout the book. After an introduction to a "common error," Janis give examples of mistakes and then the corrections. I like the layout of the book. Plenty of white space so the reader does not feel that information is being crammed onto the page. There are, indeed, some difficult areas of the English language (e.g., irregular verbs). [By the way, Janis covers the use of "e.g.") Janis does her best to simplify these difficult areas. My four-star instead of a five-star is for a couple of times when I thought Janis could have given a few more examples. I recommend this book for someone who would like to review grammar and punctuation. This book does not replace one of the several excellent style and usage books available.

I had the pleasure of reading this book in Professor Bell's advanced English class. She is a master in her own right. She loves to teach and truly cares for her students. She is contemporary in every way and her classes are superb! I took two English classes with her because I enjoyed her teaching style and my classmates loved her too! Her book is to the point and teaches grammar in a simple, straight manner. I work for three attorneys and they have every book one can imagine and the one that they consult and admire is this little gem, "clean, well-lighted, sentences." The rules of grammar, especially in the written word, can confuse and often irritate this writer looking for purity in the sentences that tell my story. The resources are plentiful and as I read this book I figured it was just another resource. Many resources are not as thorough nor as brief as this effort by Janis Bell. This one is a quick and ready reference that answers the simple questions of grammar and usage. A reader is likely to come across some of the guidelines as “I knew that” sort of thing. So often, our writing shortcomings fall into the “I forgot that” category. For the student, this is an excellent primer.

How to write clearly involves using words and punctuation correctly. The author provides examples—both right and wrong—for most of the common word and punctuation structures used in writing English and does it with humor and clarity. A pleasure to read and an accurate guide to writing modern English.

There are some great gems of information in here, but it’s written very technical. Although she defines all the grammar-speak, she relies on it too heavily so it’s sometimes hard to follow even for professional writers. I prefer other books that offer such lessons without delving into the grammar jargon.

I took Janis Bell's class at Golden Gate University 20 years ago. I have used Professor Bell's book as a primary source of reference ever since. My first language is Portuguese, which has a much harder grammar. Once I realized how easy English grammar is, it was easy to get perfect scores on all my college English courses. I have great appreciation for my professors at San Jose City College and Golden Gate University whose teaching satisfied my hunger for mastering English grammar. I believe most students just need to learn "how to learn" it. I am developing an app called Uben English, which includes a game "Wheel of Grammar" with the purpose of lifting the veil on the perceived difficulty of English grammar. I've been writing (and selling) since I was fourteen (in the early sixties). This book is more useful than Strunk and White, and easier to use than Grammar Girl. If you want one reference book about grammar, buy this one!

Easiest grammar go-to book. In fact, I loved the simplicity and the ease so much that I decided to use it for my homeschool student. Highly recommend if you just want to get to the bare bones bottom line of grammar. Loved it!

Excellent! Important to review what has happened as we try to rewrite history. Reading this book helped to explain so much and help me recall what was going on. Perhaps if more people read this, we would actually learn from history rather than repeating. Should be required reading for all Democrats who are running for office.

this is a great book. Good insight into what happened in the "contract w/America." Great reading for anyone of progressive political persuasion

Foxes in the Henhouse should be required reading for any Democrat or Independent who loves this country and is unwilling to let it continue on the Republicans' disasterous course. (Any writers willing to say that Reagan couldn't carry LBJ's jockstrap are aces in my book!)

Too much of this book is spent on telling Democrats how they can win back the White House, and, more importantly, the voter's trust. Nice premise, but it lacks imagination. While they make a good case that Republicans lie their way into wars they can get out of and give taxpayer money to wealthy associates, authors Steve Jarding and Dave Saunders spend a lot of time complaining. This is probably what makes the Democrats. Democrats whine about everything and agree on next to nothing. There is no sure thing if you're a Democrat (nominating a decorated war hero for president to oppose a clueless draft dodger) didn't accomplish anything. Of course John Kerry had the charisma of a fence post, but that's another issue.One area of concern is the author's ability to gloss over reality. Take the opening sentence to chapter 5 on page 105. How many blacks or homosexuals, or any other left of center group could identify with the statement that "several generations of Americans had witnessed firsthand the power and compassion of a government dedicated to equality, justice, fairness, and opportunity[?]" Jarding and Saunders seem out of touch, way out of touch, with the plights of many Americans who likely would associate themselves with the Democratic party. The bulk of the book impl;ies that the best way to reach out to voters is to take a page out of the Republican's book. Isn't that what's gotten us into this mess in the first place?This book just never hit home with me. I like how they paint the National Rifle Association as a radical group that threatens our freedoms more than they support them. They also have a nice collection of quotations on page 197, but the overall impact misses the mark.

Jarding and Saunders provide a credible, well-reasoned, and easy-to-read critique of recent Democratic campaigns, along with suggestions for significant improvement."Foxes in the Henhouse" begins by dissecting the '04 Presidential election into numerous dimensions, showing that Bush had improved over '00 results in about every way possible - concluding that the problem was not that eg. "Bush was a wartime President - very difficult to beat" but that Kerry, et al, had run an ineffective campaign.Kerry's last mistake was ending up with $15 million in the bank, and 75,000 votes short in Ohio that he possibly could have won had the money been used. His first mistake - conceding the equivalent of 27 states (Bush campaigned everywhere) and their 227 electoral votes - 84% of the total Bush needed to win. Most of the 27 states were in the South, fastest growing area in the U.S. and an area Saunders had recently demonstrated as winnable via Democrat Warner's 2004 victory in the governor's race.The authors assert that character assassination is now a conventional weapon for Republicans, and Democrats need to fire back. Kerry, for example, should have immediately gone after Bush on the Swift Boat attacks, and called for a debate on military matters (current issues and past service), and held it in the South. They also believe that '04 Democrats mistakenly focused on the economy instead of the war on terror, and added Wesley Clark or Bob Kerrey to the ticket. (Another possibility was Sen. Graham with a 70% approval rating in Florida. a state with 27 electoral votes - enough for Kerry to win.) Instead, Kerry let himself look foolish on the topic by being framed with the "I voted for the "87 billion in spending before I voted against it.""Foxes in the Henhouse" claims that data show voters in the South and rural America increasingly voting primarily according to issues of patriotism (eg. anti-flag-burning) or morals (they also attend church more often). Republicans have taken advantage of this by using these polarizing issues, without even being burdened with pressure to deliver tangible goods. (Possibly part of the reason Bush II feels free to fill positions with little regard for competence.) The "key" to winning the South is utilizing means to connect culturally with its masses.The authors believe that the best way to start connecting is NASCAR - eg. sponsor a car. Another is country music - eg. rewrite a popular song to endorse a candidate and have it played regularly by a popular hillbilly band. A third is via other sports - eg. hand out pins with the school and the candidate's name at football games. A fourth suggestion is to get a leading sportsperson to get out the word (eg. at gun shows) that the candidate is not going to be taking away their guns (helps also if the candidate can shoot well).Finally, Jarding and Saunders offer specifics on rebutting claims that Republicans are the party of family values and God (eg. abortion rates rose 25% under Bush), fiscal conservatism (enormous spending increases; letters from Harvard Business School professors and Nobel laureates in Economics criticizing Bush's "accomplishments," and national defense (serious blunders in setting Iraq troop levels, insufficient armor, trying to short-change veteran's benefits and reduce "combat pay).Bottom-Line: "Foxes in the Henhouse" ought to boost the morale of any Democrat, and boost all their candidates.
