Don't be fooled by the title -this book is for anyone learning to weld or improve there skills. I own or have read most books on welding aimed at the beginner and non-professional or hobbyist and while most are a waste of paper, this one, along with How To Weld (Motorbooks Workshop)), is at the top of my list. It is clearly written, with enough detail to get you pointed in the right direction. I believe that learning to weld with just written instruction would severely handicap persons efforts, but through a combination of these two books and the large amount of video instruction now available online, a beginner can make a very good start if there are no personal instruction available to them.The one caveat is that, along with How To Weld, both books try to put in so much information on different techniques that skip some areas. For instance, there is no mention of aluminum wire feed welding with a spool gun. The only mention of aluminum welding is in the TIG section.If you are looking for introductory books on welding, you won't go wrong with this one.

This book is perfect for me because it covers all of the types of welding that you might use around the house/farm and also as a profession if that is where you are headed. The author uses plain language that is easy to understand and there are plenty of pictures to show you what he is writing about. I have other welding books, but if I only wanted one book, this would be it. Everything is there that I need to do some solid work.

I haven't welded since high school over 40 years ago. I recently purchased a welder for my home shop and needed a good refresher on the details and techniques of a good weld. This book is very well laid out, with a good mix of written and pictorial descriptions to get me back on track. I have a friend who does much more welding than I do, and he actually borrowed it because he said it had some good techniques that he would benefit by.

My husband is learning to weld and loves that fact that this shows good AND bad welds. Has lots of tips and problem solving. Great project info also.

Good basic coverage of welding principles. About halfway through the book. Good read in my opinion.

Great book. Down to earth that I use for reference. Wish after reading it and learning a lot, it had more tables and reference data. I end up looking elsewhere for that, but it was a great book to learn from.

Truly amazing! Joe's style is very simple and easy to understand, especially those like myself who are not very versed in astronomy. From Gen 1 to Rev 22 it all points to Jesus and his victory over the devil. Joe's take on Rev 12 adds a new dimension on interpreting this chapter. This book compliments Understanding Jesus as we in the western world are missing beautiful truths of God's word.

I would buy from this individual/organization/company again. The books were well protected, the price was fantastic and it got to my location outside of the US faster than the actual date Amazon told me to expect the books. I ordered two of Joe Amaral's books: "Story in the Stars: Discovering God's Design and Plan for Our Universe" and "Understanding Jesus: Cultural Insights into the Words and Deeds of Christ". So far, excellent books and great resources for my ministry.

I've dabbled in looking for constellations & planets in the sky for several years now. I once spotted Saturn and its perfectly shaped rings with a pretty standard telescope you could find at Wal-Mart. I took some pretty awesome photos of the 2017 solar eclipse. I wouldn't call myself an amateur astronomer, I'd call myself, nearly an amateur astronomer ;). You could say I've had a healthy appreciation for what's out there in the vastness of space. I can spot Orion in the fall or winter. Scorpio in the summer. Sometimes the Pleiades. Joe Amaral brings to light that there has been a story in the stars for us to read from the beginning of time. He begins by saying, ""Tens of thousands of words have been written about the first ten words in the Bible: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."" So true. I know because I am an elementary teacher at a Christian school and part of our Bible class curriculum teaches that those could be the most important words in the entire Bible. Mr. Amaral connects the dots, if you will, of the constellations with a story as old as time itself. I won't give anything away here, but it's an easy read with enough technical facts to get you digging even more. It has re-ignited not only my interest in the night sky but also given me a new outlook on some of the Bible verses I've read hundreds of times. There's a deeper meaning there that was never revealed to me before. If you like to read, or you like astronomy, or are searching for a deeper meaning to scripture (or life?) you'll definitely like reading "Story In The Stars". I give it 5 stars for it's easy read, well organized story-telling, and the visual picture you have of it all at the end. I've already sent one to a friend and am going to send at least one more to my father. Happy reading!Rob

I suspect I will be returning to this book often as I work my way through the mystery novel genre. The essays are short and sweet, as all mystery novels should be. the authors of the essays briefly sets up the plotline of each of the books and then dives in quickly and ,of course, stylishly into the reason why they chose to write about that specific author and that specific book. The essays are enjoyable because the essay writers are delving into an area of their passion and they are telling you, the reader, WHY they feel this particular book is representative of the best of that author. Brilliant.

Excellent collection of essays. I would highly recommend this book to any reader looking for a new crime writer or crime novel. The contributors come from all over the world and the books go all the way back to the 19th century and go forward for over a hundred years. Interesting read. Michael Connelly on Raymond Chandler is especially thoughtful.

This is not a mystery but authors writing about other authors' mystery novels. A great idea; a clever title.1. Authors provide great insight, and some fun, each one examining their favorite work by some other mystery writer.2. I discovered some new authors whose books I'd indeed die for.

I found this book extremely informative and enjoyable. Some of the authors were new to me and others were like meeting old friends after a long absence. I will use this book as reference in the future to sample writers unknown to me,and to re-read old favorites. I would highly recommend this book. I found it best to read just a few reviews at a time. Anyone who loves mysteries will love this book

With this many authors represented, there's a wide range of books being shared, and one of the joys of reading a book like this is agreeing-- or disagreeing-- with each author's choice.Each essay also tells us a bit about the author writing it, and as I read, I also found myself learning not only about the authors and the books chosen, but about the history and evolution of crime fiction as well. Books to Die For is a feast on many levels.For me, this wasn't a book that I started reading at page one and worked my way steadily through to the end. No, I had two lines of attack. One was to find my favorite authors to see what their favorite books were. Louise Penny? Josephine Tey's The Franchise Affair. Deborah Crombie? P.D. James' Cover Her Face. Ann Cleeves? Henning Mankell's The Man Who Smiled. And the list goes on.My second line of attack was to find one of my favorite books to see which author recommended it above all others. Peter Temple's The Broken Shore? John Harvey. Charles Dickens' Bleak House? Sara Paretsky. And so it goes. The reasoning behind each choice was often fascinating and illuminating.One thing that I can guarantee about reading this book is that your own reading lists will expand. I was intrigued by authors and books I'd never heard of as well as by lesser known books by authors I was very familiar with. Read Books to Die For at your own peril for you will be consumed by the hunt for more mysteries to read!

Maybe first thing necessary when dealing with 560 pages of essays involving critique and commentary of famous authors and their particular crime novels is to get to the nitty-gritty of working at a quickened pace. To my way of thinking you do that by speed-reading through chapters deemed uninteresting from the git-go.Essays of personal favored authors and their stories included: Charles Willford, Elmore Leonard, Richard Stark, Ed McBain, Ross MacDonald, George V. Higgens, and James Crumley. Then there was Geoffrey Household and Jean-Patrick Manchette. Next in line more or less (since I was jumping all over the place) was Dame Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe, Wilkie Collins, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, Raymond Chandler, Patricia Highsmith, John D. MacDonald, Thomas Harris, James Sallis, Scott Smith, James Ellroy, Scott Phillips, and the master lyricist of them all... James Lee Burke.I'm not saying I ignored the rest of the authors or their works... just saying how I deal with full coverage of the material.I might add at this point that my all time personal favorite crime novel is Day of the Jackal (and I might add the novel is well represented by the editors). One thing I wished is that the editors included Robert McCammon and Dean Koontz. Mine by Robert McCammon features a tale concerning a 6' tall female former hippie and delusional sociopath killer with a penchant for stealing babies. And that novel is a classic of the genre. Then of course there is Dean Koontz and the intensity of his character: Edgler Foreman Vess.But when all is said and done, and despite the aforementioned possibly offbeat exclusions, the effort expended by the editors (and authors providing the essays) is well presented and achieved. And so far as I'm concerned, as a whole, the reading time was well spent.I thoroughly enjoyed every page of Books To Die For and each selection of story or author chosen and each comment made.

I purchased the Mathematics of Love after watching one of Hannah Fry's YouTube videos and visiting her website. The book is pitched as "valuable new perspective on matters of the heart" and promises to offer interesting mathematical insights into romance and love.Unfortunately, I found there was very little mathematics in the book and almost no love at all. I'm not sure who exactly the book is pitched at but I found the writing comparable to watching a TED talk: shallow, self-indulgent, and lacking in any punch or insight. Any actual mathematics is relegated to an index of footnotes and links, and the examples given don't really illuminate anything. A quick search on the internet would've yielded more intrigue. The model of love presented is reductive and often times depressing, and contrary to the author's claims does not leave one feeling particularly positive about the whole thing by the end of it.It claims on the cover to offer "patterns, proofs, and the search for the ultimate equation". This search doesn't happen and there are no proofs nor is there anything particularly mathematical contained within. Like a T.E.D marketing slogan: it offers it all and delivers nothing. The prose is dull and flat and the book can be read in less than an hour. Extremely short.Would not recommend for anyone interested in mathematics or love.

Wow, for any intellectual who wants to look at dating from a different perspective, this book does a very, very good job of weaving complex theories in math, economics, and even psychology into the world of dating. The author definitely gets kudos for her job with her explanation of Nobel-prize winning ideas and relating them to the average person in the context of dating.Girls, this book explains (mathematically) why you're on the losing end of the stick if you don't approach guys. Guys, it is our privilege, not our burden to be the gender that does the approaching.

More of an elongated magazine article than a book in its own right. Some fun insights but hardly worth being a full book. Should have been a chapter in someone else's book.

Glib and superficial. Ms Fry often states the obvious and seldom displays true insight. This is about Ted Talk marketing.

What an excellent read. I was drawn to this book based on an excerpt posted about "low tolerance" relationships (talked about in the last section, I think) but there was a lot of reasoning that rang true and made me consider what was written. A refreshing take on statistics and something that's, seemingly, non mathematical.

Is very nice to find books like this one. Easy reading, interesting, well presented and documented, illustrative... I definitely recommend it to anyone I can.

Enjoyed this book. I only wish it was a little longer. I like the mathematical explanations of human behavior, and you'll find good, solid advice as well.

READ THIS. Learned so much useful information (Myosotis method is so much easier than the traditionally taught method, but learn the reason why it works first before applying it.) It's been a very handy and useful reference for me when doing analysis, lots of examples that have lined up almost perfectly with the problems I've faced. Realize that he does occasionally leave final analysis up to you or leave things as "obvious" whether they are or are not.

I bought this book to learn engineering, and just for the fun of it. With degrees in physics and math, the material is quite accessible. If you learn mainly by working problems, these are really wonderful. But I deduct a star because most of the problems omit some critical information needed to get an answer, or the answer is numerically inaccurate (as if it was obtained hastily with a slide rule) making it difficult to know if it's correct or not. I see now that this is a hazard of buying an old first edition reprint boasting "unabridged and unaltered reproduction". Unfortunately, I have not been unable to find a later edition of the book online, or published errata. On the other hand, one does learn more from correcting errors, and maybe that's something to be grateful for.

If you have no knowledge of materials science, this book will get you up to speed to be able to get at least a basic fundamental understanding of materials and how they behave under stress!I would suggest taking a few courses in Metallurgy, or materials science before trying to read this entire book, as it is written assuming the reader has a basic understanding of terms
