Never been this disappointed before. Normally I love the Falcon guides, so I just ordered it without looking inside - biggest mistake ever. I love hiking, but this book was a waste of money, longest "hike" is 2.2 miles - you really call that a hike? Luckily I stayed with a family at the Big Island, and they knew where to do some real hikes. Though hiking is not really what people do the most, on the Big Island, neither the locals or the tourist, there are still a ton of beautiful hikes to do. Both full day, and overnight. It's truly a shame those hikes are not included.

It was a gift. They used it to found waterfalls.

Used this quite a bit while there

I read the lone review before buying, since I was interested in simple mindless short walks. However I found this book a little short on information about the Big Island, and about specific hikes. No reference is made to the "local area" of hikes. Author will helpfully include the "mile marker" turnoff #, but not the name of the area (Honomu? Hakalau? Papaikou?.......) so one can get a quick read on the location of the recommended hike. (For instance, author discusses hike near Hualalai but doesn't exactly say where it is on the map.) Such information would have been useful in the Table of Contents. Also, the author breaks up hikes within the confines of the Volcano National Park area, so as to seem like the Big Island has a lot of discrete trails; not. Also, I ask why two interesting hikes, Waipio Valley and Pololu Valley were not included. Waipio can be done with a 4-wheel drive vehicle, and then a walk around the valley. Pololu admittedly is a bit more difficult and may require vehicular assistance part of the way, but the walk part is pretty exhilarating.

I spent $10 sight unseen to buy this on Amazon, because most of Falcon's other guides are good, detailed and sensibly priced. I wrongfully assumed this would be similar. It is a tiny guide, easily fitting in a pocket. 96 pages, but only 60 dedicated to the "hikes." Only 18 "hikes" are described. Only 4 of these are located on the west side of the island where 90%+ of people vacation. And, it turns out these "hikes" are really not hikes at all, but walks or easy strolls. 11 are less than 1 mile roundtrip. 7 are from 1.1 to 2.2 miles. I mean, really, do you call a roundtrip of 1/2 mile (5 of them) or less a hike?Most people will be much happier with: Hawaii The Big Island Trailblazer: Where to hike, snorkel, surf, bike, drive. This has "156 hikes and strolls" along with snorkeling, biking, camping, etc. info. It's $15 instead of $10, but it is 10X more useful.

Received this book pretty quickly. Has some good hikes in it but doesn't have any many hikes as expected. The hikes that it does have has good info about though.

I bought the book because the author claims to be an authority on the science of sourdough, its digestibility and nutritional benefits. The book is informative, but...On page 203, it states “Extensive research was completed to write this book, however, there is not room to list the hundreds of studies used. For those interested, all source material and references listed are linked to the original studies at sourdough.co.uk.”The text DOES NOT include a list of references, which would have only added a few more pages and would have gone a long way towards legitimizing its claims, allowing readers to look up the references to evaluate the studies for themselves. Furthermore, the information IS NOT on the author’s website as the book promises, UNLESS it is behind a paywall only available to people who have further subscribed to one of her classes. This is not acceptable. If I were the publisher (Kyle Books), I wouldn’t allow an author to do this.I am not just disappointed, I am pissed. And I wouldn’t have written this negative review had the author addressed my concerns on social media.

I've been trying to learn to make sourdough bread on my own for a while. Read a number of books including The Bread Baker's Apprentice and Artisan Sourdough Made Simple. There's nothing simple about sourdough, and I fully understand this is a discipline that takes many tries (and many failures) in order to really understand what's happening let alone get a loaf of bread that will make all the time (and flour!) worth it.I've also been following The Sourdough School on instagram for some time. I like Vanessa Kimbell's personality. But I think she should have hired a good editor as well as a great number of test-reader/bakers (who've never attended her class or follow her online) to do her recipes from the beginning. It is patently clear she did neither of these.As has been said before, there are grammatical (and technical) errors that make following incredibly difficult. There is page flipping back and forth multiple times within a single process to double and triple check you know what she's talking about--and even then you're never really certain. Terminology is inadequately defined, and steps are unclear.I imagine this is likely a helpful handbook if you've attended one of Vanessa Kimbell's workshops in person, with the ability to ask questions in real-time for clarification. Otherwise, this is not a book for a sourdough beginner. And I do hope a second edition is forthcoming after feedback from all these would-be-bakers who are thoroughly confused, like myself, even after baking her "basic" recipe more than 5 times.

Beautiful book , complicated recipes with too much back and forth following recipes. Returned. For the author, spend less time on fancy photos and more time writing recipes that follow more easily. Encourage you to have people try to follow your recipes using just your book, not easy.

We’ve used this book on an iPad with the Kindle app extensively these past months and are delighted with it. The pictures are lovely and helpful. I just received the hard copy today and am eager to pass it on to my grandson who is a sourdough baking enthusiast as am I. The book clearly explains why sourdough breads (without added yeast) have added immeasurably to my wellbeing. It is indeed gut-friendly! Note to Americans: get a small scale that weighs grams. Thank you Vanessa Kimbell! Wish I could attend your Sourdough School in the UK.

I've been baking sourdough for 25 years. This book has so much vital information...opened my eyes to many details i didn't think about. Worth every penny! Great step by step guides and photos. I know I'll be using this reference book often.

I have been baking sourdough for 2 years and have been so intrigued by the science that Vanessa Kimball brings to this subject. Finally, I have a way to explain to friends and loved ones the health benefits of eating sourdough bread. Many people have an aversion to eating bread, or treat it as a guilty pleasure, it does not have to be this way. But, much bread sold in America should not be consumed and very likely, harms your gut. What an amazing price as well. I don't know if I would start with this book, if you were just beginning, simply because so many factors go into making good bread. It can daunt a beginner. If you are a beginner, try Ken Forkish's book instead, otherwise jump right in!!!

This book is gorgeous, well written and informative to boot. A must have resource for anyone mildly into baking and sourdough.

Fabulous book with the most amazing photos. Totally enjoyable! Purchased for a trip around Lake Superior (by car). This book gave me a better idea of where I wanted to stop, explore and poke around + local info that is missed by guidebooks. A great arm-chair travel book for those that prefer to camp and paddle the shore of Lake Superior by easy chair :).

Disappointed because it did not have the dust jacket. Don't remember it saying that upfront. Might not have bought it. Book in good condition though

Wonderful photography and interesting subject matter. I may not have actually read it yet, but I have gone through it several times and enjoyed it every time.

The beauty of the book are the incredible photos. Excellent eye and equipment. The narrative is for the hardcore only.
