About the Author
GREG MALONE, with Tommy Sexton, began what became CODCO, a satirical comedy show that ran for 63 episodes on CBC TV and included Cathy Jones, Mary Walsh and Andy Jones. As a political activist, Malone participated in the campaign that stopped the privatization of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. Malone has championed other environmental causes, including fighting the importation of garbage to Newfoundland. After the death of Tommy Sexton, Malone devoted some years of his life to raise awareness of the impediment prejudice can be to the health care of persons infected with HIV or living with AIDS. He is the author of the acclaimed memoir, You Better Watch Out, and is currently a director and actor who lives in St. John's.

For years there was talk of an under the table deal regarding Newfoundland joining Canada. Many stories were considered nothing more than conspiracy. Now in this book "Don't Tell the Newfoundlanders: Greg Malone unearths what really happened in the years leading up to 1949 and confederation. Using a combination of interviews and recently released documents from both the Canadian and British Governments he pieces it all together revealing the true and whole account of what transpired.The saddest part of this account is the realization that Newfoundland, unknowingly was lead down the garden path and presented with a new future that they had no say in. There are those today that talk and surmise what things would be like today if Newfoundland had indeed returned to responsible government.A Must Read
Well written book that tells a history that needed to be told. Malone is clearly a passionate Newfoundlander in the same vein that Ray Guy and Peter Chassin were.One thing isn't clear in the book . Why was Joey Smallwood was so overwhelmingly in favor of Confederation.I have recommended the book to my children (one of whom was born in Newfoundland) and to friends who aren't Newfoundlanders and to anyone else who wants or needs to learn about the episode in Canadian history.

Greg Malone's book is very well researched and exhibits a writing style that is very easy to read and enjoy. His istorical presentation is rational and accurate and presents a picture of the times and events that leave me with an understanding of this period in the history of Newfoundland. Well done Greg Malone.

This book should be read by every Newfoundlander And Canadian. Contains a very detailed account of how Newfoundland was forced into Conferation with Canada in 1949 without their consent.
